I agree with those who say she is not the new Eagleton: ditching her would destroy McCain's campaign. It is interesting to get the take of party insiders who are not natural backers of Sarah Palin though, and I sat down with Carly Fiorina , one of McCain's senior advisors and strongest surrogates. Carly Fiorina has become my favorite surrogate for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth. As Dana Millbank sketched in July, the former Hewlett-Packard chief volunteered in a discussion about health insurance: "There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth-control medication -- those women would like a choice." And then she repeated, "Those women would like a choice." Oh, the hilarity that ensued. Asked to respond, McCain delivered one of his more memorable reactions: An 8-second, silent, open-mouthed search of the heavens for an answer. He settled on, "I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer." Yesterday brought more Fiorina straight talk. In an interview on MSNBC (the clip in question starts around the 1:07 mark), Andrea Mitchell asked Fiorina to explain her comment to a radio show earlier in ... Source: blogs.wsj.com --- 1 day ago

It’s almost as if the McCain campaign circulated a memo on how not to respond to the Wall Street collapse, but everyone misinterpreted it as what they should do. First, McCain asserted that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong” before describing them as “at great risk.” Then his top economic adviser suggested—the campaign says jokingly—that McCain helped invent the BlackBerry . Now Carly Fiorina, another top adviser, said in separate instances that neither Sarah Palin nor John McCain could run a major corporation. Now, before you pounce on Fiorina, consider the full context: MITCHELL: You were asked whether Sarah Palin has the experience to run a major company ... and you said, "No, I don't, but you know what? That's not what she's running for." Fiorina: “Well, I don't think John McCain could run a major corporation. I don't think Barack Obama could run a major corporation. I don't think Joe Biden could run a major corporation. But on the other hand, running a major corporation is not the same as being President or Vice President of the United States. It is a fallacy to suggest that the country is like a company. So, of course, to run a business you have to have a lifetime of experience in business. But that's not what John McCain, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin or Joe Biden are doing.” Her answer is completely natural and nondamning if you look at the entire paragraph. (Although you could take issue with the "fallacy" line, ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 37 days ago
Earlier this afternoon, McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina did a brief sit down with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell, in which the two discussed the coverage of vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. Fiorina was upset at what she termed "sexist characterizations" of Palin, saying: "What we are saying to the media of the world is that the Democratic party stood by while Hillary Clinton was subjected to incredible sexism in the media. The Republican party is not going to stand by." But Fiorina is losing her bearings! As a matter of fact, the "Democratic Party" did no such thing. Here's DNC chairman Howard Dean, offering up a commentary on sexism to George Stephanopoulos that he repeatedly recited throughout the primary season : DEAN: There has been an enormous amount of sexism in this campaign on the part of the media, including the mainstream media. We'll leave present company excepted, because I think that's true. But there have been major networks that have featured numerous outrageous comments that if the words were reversed and they were about race, the people would have been fired. So that's a big issue. And there are a lot of women in this country who -- there's two issues here. One is one candidate is ahead and one is not. That happens all the time in primaries, and you get over that. What you don't get over is deep wounds that have been inflicted on somebody because they happen to be a woman running for president of the United States. ... After yesterday, is anyone surprised? You know I’ll miss ya. Seriously, she's had all the "help" she can take. That said, does this give us some insight into the Bush years? Do some conservatives simply underestimate the task of government? Does this explain the " she's just like me! " thing? Is the idea that running a business is hard, but any fool can run a government? Also she follows this up with another foible about McCain. ... Looks like we might not be hearing from Republican Party apparatchik Carly Fiorina about how awesome the party's presidential ticket is any time soon. The former Hewlett-Packard CEO was asked by a St. Louis radio host if she felt vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin had the experience to run a major company like HP, and Fiorina replied " No, I don't. But you know what? That's not what she's running for ." When she was later asked about that statement, she replied that presidential nominee John McCain wasn't capable of running a large company, either — but then neither is Democratic nominee Barack Obama or his running mate Joe Biden, in Fiorina's opinion. I, for one, appreciate Fiorina's optimistic assessment, since the current president promised to run the nation like a company back in 2000, and we all know how that turned out. ...

Another day of uncertainty, another day of losses on Wall Street. After we watched Senator Richard Shelby play the role of the stereotypical American politician and lose investor confidence by suggesting there is an alternative to the $700 billion plan to rescue the financial system. There is an alternative: watch our financial system collapse and then try to pick-up the pieces. The staff at tech:stocker appreciates Senator Shelby's caution when writing a check of that magnitude to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson who seems to have a shopping list for the cash and can't wait to spend it. But without an amazing plan in hand, Senator Shelby needs to put his political grandstanding on the back burner before the market drops even more and Americans start turning their mattresses into savings accounts. After looking at Dell (DELL:NASDAQ) and taking a pass, it made sense to look at their chief competitor, Hewlett Packard (HPQ:NYSE). While Dell has been having its share of problems, Hewlett Packard has been thriving. As Dell looks to sell a manufacturing plant in Ireland to improve its bottom line, Hewlett Packard acquires EDS with cash and new debt. Bringing EDS into the fold puts Dell in the... ...
