Who knew that kids' playtime could be so enhanced with an electric carving knife? Think of the fun we'll have! Asha at ParentHacks has the scoop: I was given an electric carving knife as a wedding present with a note that went something like this: This is great as a carving knife, but even better for all those times you need to cut Cardboard for your childrens' projects. I have yet to use the knife for my own children, but as a teacher I use it all the time. So nice and easy! Cut Cardboard with an electric carving knife ( Thanks, Marilyn ! ) ...

Filed under: Products and services , Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) Hewlett-Packard Corp. (NYSE: HPQ ) will soon be packaging one of its laptop PCs in a fabric bag instead of Cardboard boxes after heeding partner Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.'s (NYSE: WMT ) request to offer a more ecologically sound packing solution for the laptops it sells through the giant retailer. By making this packaging change, materials like foam, Cardboard and plastic were reduced by 97%, according to HP. The Hewlett-Packard Pavilion PC, which sells for $798 on Wal-Mart shelves, will probably see a lot of consumer traction for this move. The company has stated several times that it's really trying to become greener. In addition to partially powering some of its San Diego-area buildings with solar power and being green globally , packaging a good laptop seller at the world's largest retailer in ecologically-sound packaging will make an impression to those consumers paying attention. But that's not the end -- HP can also ship 25% more laptops in each truck as a result of the packaging change, saving transportation costs in addition to landfill or recycling space. Now all the company has to do is make its packaging more of a marketing point than the commodity laptop PC being sold inside of it. If HP can manage that, it really will have a sales winner on its hands.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

SUNBURY — The second annual Cardboard Boat Regatta got off to a great start, all five adult entries actually left the dock without sinking, four of them made it around the small course in one piece. Sean Dimon and his boat — “Sharks Fins-Up” — was in the lead for a moment before it tipped over halfway through the course and spilling the captain into the Susquehanna River. Sisters Colleen Colonna of Selinsgrove and Kim Colonna of Harrisburg skippered their boat “Tu Sorella” into first place of the adult division. They were followed closely by John Elick of Bloomsburg, who was the captain of the “One in A Million” ship. “This is my first year so I freelanced the design,” said Dimon. “It only took me three days to build it, but I just finished painting it three hours ago.” Navy veteran Jeffrey Lesher spent a week working on his vessel. “I think we are going to sink,” he said prior to the race. He and his first mate, 9-year-old son Matthew, did indeed go down midway through the race course. Matthew waived to the crowd as the last of the gray Cardboard slipped beneath the calm river surface. The children’s category attracted enough attention to force three heats. Several boats failed to survive those qualifying races, but there were still smiles all around. ...

And again into the breech, we left the small town of Burney, catching a ride out to the trail and continuing north, passing the lovely Burney Falls and climbing a short ridge before the day was done. Our plans were to make all speed for the town of Mount Shasta, so the account may be a bit shorter due to the higher miles we were covering — 28-mile days are not conducive to my usual rambling. Early in the day Matt told me a great new saying, “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.” He recalled this saying after stepping both feet into Peavine Creek, rushing to grab a water bottle I had dropped to him. read more ...

It always makes me laugh when moving companies try to sell their own boxes. Who would pay for a box with so much Cardboard already going into the landfills ? In the last month or so my husband has been picking boxes up all over the city. He goes to liquor stores, bars, grocery stores, and restaurants. MORE BOXES is on the top of the moving checklist every week. Gulp. I suddenly get how this is not the most eco-friendly option . Every time hubby goes on a box run, we’re using that darned car . Need I mention the amount of tape required to make sure the toy hippos don’t fall out? If we lived in California, we would most definitely use RecoPacks from rentagreenbox.com , a company that takes zero-impact very seriously. Not only do they scour the landfills for trash that is difficult to recycle, such as old car seats and bottles that once held bleach or laundry detergent, they also deliver the containers (when you rent them for a buck a week) in a truck that runs on veggie oil and bio fuel. When you’re done you simply place the RecoPacks on a “poopy pallet” (made partially from the shells of old diapers) outside your new home and the veggie truck picks them up. No secret dumping of boxes in the cover of darkness necessary. Read more of this story » ...

Greenbang’s not always the biggest lover of supermarkets, usually opting for the local food market rather than the Sainsbury’s at the end of the road. Whilst I respect their purchasing power there are, I feel, very few occasions when the industry as a whole uses it well. But, on this occasion, Greenbang is impressed. Walmart, which owns [...] ...
