The old stretch of State Highway 199 that runs northwest out of Fort Worth has seen livelier days, but the sinful spirit is evidently still alive: the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department raided a string of illegal gambling joints on Jacksboro Highway early today. I love Arlinda Arriaga's description of the highway's history: The Jacksboro Highway - so named because it's the road from Fort Worth to the seat of Jack County, to the west - has long been celebrated in song and story. Since at least the 1940s and '50s, clubs along the highway have attracted their share of jokers and wild cards: Card Sharks, loan Sharks, prostitutes, low-grade mobsters and other nefarious characters. Many years back, I interviewed a retired musician whose western band played the 'tonks along the Jacksboro Highway back in the 1950s. In those days, he said, the joints teemed with hard-living, heavy-drinking workers from the North Fort Worth meatpacking plants. Brawls and police raids, he said, were routine. --Jacquielynn Floyd ... Source: www.cnet.com.au --- 32 days ago

The Ducks met up with the Sharks for the second time in three days, this time up in San Jose. The fight Card was not nearly as full as it was on Wednesday night, but still full of penalties nonetheless. After spending two weeks with two legged lawyer type Sharks here at the convention sites, I had an opportunity to experience REAL Sharks, you know the aquatic type at the “Underwater Adventures Aquarium” located at the Mall of America. Mike Newport and I headed there very early this morning to swim with the fishes at the Rainbow Reef exhibit, touted as their newest EXTREME adventure. It's an artificial reef filled with over 60 types of tropical fish, including puffers, stingrays and some Sharks. Two Zebra Sharks appropriately named "Obama" and "McCain" were swimming about the tank with us. (Obama is slightly larger than McCain). As a long time diver, ocean swimmer, surfer and underwater hockey player, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to slip into the tank and experience this up close and personal. Video_090408_006 The water is about 72 degrees and I certainly didn't need a wetsuit but the aquarium felt it was a good idea to have us all insulated and so we wouldn't get scraped up on the artificial reef. Video_090408_007 The exhibit is a series of tanks with a large acrylic tube stretching through the reefs so you can experience the setting without getting wet. I prefer getting wet myself! This next video was shot from the tube in the shark tank area which I'm told I could have dived on scuba had I brought my "c" Card with me. Shade (2004) — — Damian Nieman did a great job of set the scenes in Shade, his first job as director. He used his ensemble cast in this exciting drama of high stakes Card games and players who may not always be what they seem. Shade means to hide the move when you are doing a Card manipulation, i.e, cheating. — — Nieman wrote the story of people that live outside the pale of respectability, grifters, con artists, illegal gamblers played by a superb ensemble cast consisting of Sylvester Stallone, Gabriel Byrne, Stuart Townsend, Jamie Foxx, and decent support from Bo Hopkins, Hal Holbrook, Thandie Newton, Roger G. Smith, and Melanie Griffith. All of the characters do excellent work and are memorable in their performances. — — The plot concerns a young player who wants to knock off the leader of the pack, in this case Stallone, who plays The Dean, the smartest Card mechanic in history. The young guy is played by Stuart... ... Source: youtube.com --- 69 days ago

Consumers have some not-so-nice things to say about credit-Card companies and federal regulators have given them the chance to air their gripes. In public comments on proposed credit-Card rules, consumers complained about “loan Sharks,” “crooks,” “leeches” and “usury.” Many said rates seemed to be raised arbitrarily and punitively, adding that they should have a fair amount [...] ... Bill and I were a bit worried that the twins wouldn’t enjoy Cooperstown as much as Finn would. The main purpose of the trip was for Finn to play baseball, after all, and Porter and Drew were required to watch a couple of games a day. We hadn’t been there an hour before I realized I’d underestimated their ability to enjoy themselves regardless of the circumstances, although they did so in very different ways. Drew idolized the big kids and wanted nothing more than to be part of their Card games, particularly one called “Presidents.” The winner of each hand was the President for the next round, while the lowest two were designated “Dirt” and “Scum.” Drew achieved his goal and played joyously with the high-schoolers, and even got to be President a time or two. He hung out with the high-schoolers in the stands, cheering, one smooth-faced midget sandwiched between the six foot tall whiskered teens. (Here, of course, I’m referring to the males; the females were also smooth-faced and delicate.) By the end of the week he was convinced that he was as hip as any fifteen-year-old. Porter, of course, followed his own muse. He was frustrated by not being able to see the entire field from the stands, so he created a perch that solved that problem to everyone’s satisfaction, unless you were the person left without a chair. He also played cards, but preferred to play poker with the dads. There were no chips to be found, but we were flush with pretzels ... Source: jackandcatcurio.blogspot.com --- 8 days ago
Paul Newman has passed away. Age 83. We all have role models in our lives. Different ones at different stages of our lives. People who inspire us. Sometimes they are related- father, mother, favorite aunt, etc. Other times they are teachers, friends, sometimes even strangers. People who imprint on us. They leave a mark on us. You felt a connection. As a child-my mother would point out to me ones that inspired her. Sometimes role models can be inherited in such a manner. Sometimes we agree with these role models, other times, we find our own. One that my mother eagerly pointed out to me was Paul Newman. One of my favorite movies as a kid was "The Sting". After I watched Redford, Newman, and Robert Shaw play con men and Card Sharks. I took it into practice on the school playground- trying to be clever, cheat at cards, sell bubble gum at a hiked price, crack jokes at the playground monitors. I ran around the playground with a soundtrack in my head. That soundtrack was the song the "Entertainer" by Scott Joplin it was used several times in the movie. Sometimes we do this- at least I do. We all have a soundtrack that plays with us in our heads at certain times. There are few dudes in the world that haven't heard "Stayin Alive" and started walking with a strut. Trust me. So I was a Paul Newman fan growing up. The older I got -the more I watched. I thought that I knew the majority of his work. It wasn't until my first year in College that I ... Visited Capitol Square at lunchtime today, and came back with an Asus 9600GT, 1GB version. I will try not to blow this one up. For two weeks of effort and about $120 more than I originally planned to spend, I'm getting half the performance. But at least I've evaded the Sharks. Update: Seems to work. (Tiptoes away very very carefully...) Update: Still working. Card temperature is hovering around 35ºC (95ºF), compared to about 60ºC (140ºF) for the short-lived 9800GT. The cards are supposed to be roughly comparable in performance and power consumption - the 9800GT a bit higher on each.... ... Source: ai.mee.nu --- 39 days ago
My PC blue-screened again, with an IRQL-NOT-EQUAL or whatever it is. Likely causes for this, according to the wisdom of the 'net, are bad memory or bad drivers. Since my PC bluescreened while I was reinstalling the video drivers, my first port of call was to uninstall those drivers. Which I did. My PC has an all-in-one ATI motherboard. I was installing an ATI video Card. It's the same drivers. I just uninstalled my motherboard drivers. And, after reboot, everything seems to be working perfectly. Last week Scott and I headed down to Tybee Island for a few days for a much-needed (for him) vacation. Mom and Dad had rented a beach house and had graciously invited whoever was able to come and spend some time there with them. We got there Thursday evening and were able to stay until Sunday evening. It was a wonderful time! Do you see it? It's Chester THE Cheeto! Seriously........even Dad agreed this Cheeto looked like Chester. After I ate (of course) and we got settled, Mom, Dad, Scott, and I sat down for a game of Phase 10. It was a hit. Sadie wanted to play, too. Scott thought my hair was cute, so he took a picture. Friday morning (and every morning) Mom went out for a walk and left Sadie behind. Sadie did not like this one bit. Scott was like a little kid playing in the waves. He had a boogy board and had a blast riding the waves in and bobbing around out there. I loved watching him. Taking a break. This was my vantage point. There were a bunch of beach things at the house that we were free to use as we wanted, and let me tell you - I am SOLD on the wonders of beach umbrellas. LOVE THEM. I don't think I can ever go to the beach without an umbrella again. This fair skinned beauty has found her hero. Scott even used the boogy board as a skimmer a couple of times. I liked watching the birds. I decided that seagulls are just about the world's grumpiest birds. "What's with this sand? And the water and the sun and the people? Geez...... ...
