Scottish driver Dario Franchitti will return to the Indy Racing League in 2009 as the replacement for England's Dan Wheldon at Chip Ganassi Racing. Franchitti, the 2007 IRL champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, left IndyCars at the end of last year to move into NASCAR driving for Ganassi. But his Sprint Cup team never found Sponsorship, and Ganassi shut down the No. 40 Car in July. ...

Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman officially announced Sponsorship for Newman's No. 39 Stewart-Haas racing Car earlier today. US Army, which splits from the No. 8 Car after this season, has a one-year deal with the No. 39 with two one-year options. The Army's previous deal was also a series of one-year options that lasted six years. This is because the defense department has to recalibrate things each year. Major General Montague Winfield was on hand for the press conference and was asked if the Army had any concerns about the fact that Gene Haas, the owner of Haas Automation, is in jail for tax evasion. Winfield said he sees his partnership with Stewart-Haas Racing as a new beginning for the organization and said "The individual that deals with us is Tony Stewart." Stewart was quick to point out that he is partnered with Haas Automation, not Gene Haas. I'm not sure I see the difference there. Stewart said he could tell his win at Talladega brought energy to not just the Gibbs teams, but also the Haas CNC No. 66 and No. 70 teams. He also said he feels very flattered that his association with the Haas organization brought about such a flurry of sponsor interest. He is, after all, taking over a team that had two cars with very little Sponsorship before he got there. Stewart was asked how close he is to finding a second sponsor for the No. 39, since US Army will only be the primary sponsor on 22 points races next season. That prompted th ...

Bryan Clauson's official sponsor's name is very, very, very long. Target and Sony Computer Entertainment America's MotorStorm Pacific Rift will be the primary sponsors as he tries to make his Cup debut this weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The Car will be the No. 40 Target/Sony MotorStorm Pacific Rift Dodge. Who says Sponsorship is too visible in NASCAR? Not me. The 19-year-old was a rookie in the Nationwide series this year and made his first Nationwide start in September of 2007 at Richmond. He has one pole, one top five and two top 10s. Here are some quotes about the news courtesy of CGR: “I couldn’t be more excited about getting onto the track for my first NASCAR Sprint Cup event.  To have Target and Sony on the No. 40 Dodge is pretty cool.  I love video games, especially if it involves any form of racing.  Growing up I played racing games like MotorStorm Pacific Rift to imagine being in the action.  This weekend I get the opportunity to live my childhood dream of actually participating in Sprint Cup racing action.” -- Bryan Clauson “To have two brands like Sony and Target team up for Bryan’s Cup debut is exciting to us.  Bryan has done a super job in the Nationwide Series and his development is paramount to us as we move into 2009 and beyond.  We are thrilled about the opportunity for Bryan to get into a Cup Car.” -- Steve Lauletta, President of Chip Ganassi Racing ...

Rain ruined Joey Logano's chance to make his Sprint Cup debut last week in Richmond in a Joe Gibbs ride. He'll try again this week, racing the 96 for Hall of Fame Racing at New Hampshire. This from the AP: Joey Logano will make his Sprint Cup debut this weekend in New Hampshire in the No. 96 Toyota for Hall of Fame Racing. Logano, who will take over for Tony Stewart next season at Joe Gibbs Racing, was scheduled to make his debut last weekend in Richmond before rain washed out qualifying. That Car was fielded by JGR. He was originally scheduled to race this weekend in New Hampshire for Hall of Fame, but there had been speculation he would move back into a fourth JGR Car to make his first start. Instead, the two teams agreed to move JGR’s Home Depot Sponsorship to Hall of Fame’s Car for the 18-year-old Logano’s first race. AP-ES-09-10-08 1444EDT ...

North Carolina driver Burt Myers, who was disqualified after an apparent victory in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series last weekend at Martinsville Speedway, has been suspended for the next race in the Southern Modified Tour in addition to the disqualification. Team owner Philip Smith and crew chief Scott Widener were also suspended until Oct. 1, which means one race. Widener was fined $1,000. Among the violations were ones found in the wiring of the Car.s ignition system. And in another racing series, Hooters and United Speed Alliance Racing have announced that Hooters will end its title Sponsorship of USAR.s Pro Cup Series after the 2008 season. Hooters has been with the series since its inception in 1994. ...

Dale Earnhardt passed his love of Talladega Superspeedway to his race team, which took a must-win mentality into every event at NASCAR's biggest track. But no one talks about Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s one-time domination of Talladega anymore, making the organization's run of six wins in seven races a mere memory. Instead, Friday's return to the place of pride for DEI was the backdrop for a once-mighty team facing serious questions about its long-term stability. "What's killing me is the perception that's out there right now, and we've got to do something to overcome it," DEI president Max Siegel said. "But there's nothing I can say or do short of bringing in a sponsor or winning on the track to change people's perception of this race team." The latest blow came this week when Paul Menard said he will leave at the end of the season to join Yates Racing. The loss of Menard in itself is not devastating. But Menard also is taking the Sponsorship from his father's company with him to Yates, leaving DEI in search of funding during a horrendous economic downturn. Currently a four-Car team, there's no guarantee DEI will be able to sustain all those programs next season. The company has Sponsorship for Martin Truex Jr.'s team next year, but the U.S. Army is leaving the Car Aric Almirola will drive, and Regan Smith's entry has not had full funding all of this year. ...

Patrick Carpentier was released from Gillett Evernham Motorsports on Tuesday, and Mike Wallace and AJ Allmendinger will finish the season in the No. 10 Dodge. Carpentier was likely being let go at the end of this season, anyway. GEM had already hired Reed Sorenson to take over the Car next season, and Carpentier's return was dependent on the team finding Sponsorship for a fourth entry. But his release was fast-tracked after Carpentier failed to qualify for last weekend's race at Talladega Superspeedway. Carpentier later wrote on his personal Web site that he argued after qualifying with team director Mike Shiplett, who blamed him for failing to qualifying in a dispute that several others witnessed. "I think it's a complete lack of respect," Carpentier wrote. "I never was shy to take the blame when I thought it was my fault, but here, everybody knows that it's like driving in a straight line. The driver just has to keep the steering wheel straight. He should have taken a time out and calmed down before he spoke." The No. 10 is outside the top 35 in points, and GEM vice president Mark McArdle indicated the team did not think Carpentier could get it inside the coveted mark before the end of the season. The top 35 in the standings at the end of this year are guaranteed a spot in the season-opening Daytona 500. ...

Paul Menard's move from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to Yates Racing for 2009 is official. "This is a great opportunity and I'm glad to be joining the Yates Racing organization next season," Menard in making the announcement Tuesday. "I'm excited to be a part of their future." Yates Racing has worked out Sponsorship for two cars, driven by Travis Kvapil and David Gilliland, on almost a week-by-week basis this year. Menard brings Sponsorship from Menard's, the company owned by his father, John Menard, as well as several associate sponsorships. "It's a positive addition for us to get a guy like Paul," team owner Doug Yates said. "He's been through adversity in his first year in Cup and shown tremendous improvement in his second year. ...He already has a good relationship with our current drivers, so adding that third source of data should help our entire team rise up." No Car number has been announced for Menard's Car for 2009. ...

This 1996 Reynard Champ Car was driven by Stefan Johanson with Sponsorship from Alumax Aluminum. The Car was used as the primary speedway Car and backup at road courses. Following the 1996 season, the Car was purchased by FEDEX and given a show Car livery to celebrate that company's series Sponsorship. FEDEX utilized the Car promotionally, photographing each of the 1997 series drivers with the FEDEX Car at the scenic California Speedway. The Car was purchased by its current owners in 2004 and fitted a Cosworth X8 Series II Turbocharger Champ Car spec engine to replace the ILMOR Mercedes 1C08G unit that is now unavailable. Few conversions of this type have been successfully completed, but after two years the project is now complete and ready for historic racing in the B.O.S.S. Series. ...
