In his pregame interview, Coach Bruce Boudreau confirmed that Jose Theodore will start in net tonight against the Blackhawks and the lineup will be the same from yesterday's season opener. Boudreau did talk to Theodore, but said that this game needs to serve as a clean slate for the whole team, not just the team's prime free-agent signee, who gave up four goals on 17 shots in the 7-4 loss to Atlanta. "That was the most goals we've given up," Boudreau said. "There were some bad goals by the goalie but they weren't all goalie mistakes. It was an embarrassing, and we put the onus back on the same group of guys that played to come back and see if they can do better." The WSJ reports that Neel Kashkari, the bailout czar, told a group of Wall Street executives that the restrictions on executive compensation in the bailout bill really don't mean anything. Of course anyone who bothered to look at the bill already knew that the compensation restrictions were meaningless before the bill passed. So why do we only see this reported in the media after the fact? (The Post already had an article last Saturday making this point, two days after the bill passed, as did USA Today.) Why didn't any reporters go up to the proponents of the bill who were touting the pay provisions and ask them whether they were fools or liars? Isn't that what the media is supposed to do? It looks to me like the media went into full sales promotion mode on this bailout bill, but I'm open to other explanations. This summer, Huet and Kolzig left as free agents and the Caps signed former Most Valuable Player Jose Theodore. This year, so far, the Caps' current and former goalies have similar numbers, as follows: Player Games Wins Losses Goals Allowed Team Huet 1 0 1 4 Chicago Kolzig 1 0 1 2 Tampa Bay Johnson 1 0 1 3 Washington Theodore 1 0 0 4 Washington Judging from these statistics, which are all verifiable at NHL.com , the goalies the Caps start this season with are about as good as the ones they let go over the summer. None of the goalies the Caps played last year or this year have won a game yet. All four have played in one game, each allowing between two and four goals, and all - except for Theodore - have received credit for a loss. The only problem with these numbers is that the Caps have only played one game. Theodore didn't get credit for losing last night to the Atlanta Thrashers because he was pulled half-way through, and Brent Johnson got credit for the 7-3 season-opening loss . While the Caps goalies have let in about as many goals as the former Caps goalies, they've done so in half the time, meaning the current Caps goalies are letting in goals more than twice as fast as their predecessors.
