As the District 6 West season closed out last week, Canton was battling with Stoughton to stay out of last place and thinking about how to improve for next season. "We have a bunch of kids returning for next year," said co-captain Ryan Melaugh. This year, Canton was making the switch from playing in the eastern part of the district to the stronger west side. "This (division) is much tougher," said Melaugh. "All of the teams are just so much closer competition." "In the other league, you knew going into a game you could somewhat get an idea if you were going to win the game or not, unless you had a really bad day," added co-captain Charles Beshwaty. Post 24 has benefited from facing some of the west players during the Hockomock Baseball season. Legion teams Foxboro and Norfolk draw their players from Foxboro, Mansfield, King Philip, and Franklin – all teams Canton battles each spring. "I've been playing against these (Foxboro) guys for the last three years," said Melaugh, who played for Sharon. "It helps with positioning the other guys against them." Playing Foxboro (10-7-2) at home last Thursday, Post 24 ran into a hot pitcher as Foxboro's Joe Swindells mowed down 15 batters in a 9-2 win. The feat was even more astonishing because the right-hander was rushing to get his warm-up tosses in and stretching out his arm moments before the game. "I actually didn't warm up as much as I would’ve liked to," said the pitcher. "I di ... Source: forum.grasscity.com --- 2 days ago

The Canton Police Department increased by one member Tuesday with the approval of two new hires. In addition, two current officers were promoted at a meeting of the Canton Police and Fire Commission. Josh Wages and Jarrod Smith will be offered jobs as patrolmen with the department pending psychological exams. Both were approved unanimously by commission members Jaki Kohler, Bob Waskow and Larry Avery. The recent departure of Police Chief Jeff Fritz left a vacancy in the department, new Police Chief Dan Taylor said. Fritz was not reappointed when Kevin Meade took over as mayor for Rod Heinze, who resigned to move closer to his family. The City Council recently authorized the hiring of another officer. Taylor said the extra officer will help cut overtime costs in the department. "It's a good thing," Taylor said of adding a member. "Hopefully it will help us become more proactive." The commission unanimously approved the promotion of Officer Martin Bowton and of Sgt. John Harmon to lieutenant. ... Source: www.week.com --- 2 days ago
