Opposition to a proposal to institute transfer station fees as well as nearly two hours of sometimes hostile debate forced the Board of Selectmen to adjourn Saturday without cutting its budget. First Selectmen Brian Sear said the board will call a special meeting “as soon as possible,” probably Monday or Tuesday, to cut the $81,900 mandated earlier this month by the Board of Finance. Sear outlined more than $35,000 in reductions, including cuts to the Town Clerk and Tax Collector’s office, a reduction in temporary office personnel and pushing back money for revaluation to next year, before suggesting the town implement a fee system at the transfer station. But Sear said these cuts would lead to a drastic loss in services for residents. “What it comes down to with budgets is that there is no right or wrong, it’s where you place priority,” Sear said. Trash Committee Advisory Board member Rich Curtis said he suggested implementing fees for the transfer station for the last six months, but the other members have opposed it, fearing it would lead to “trash in the streets.” “I wan ...
