Canon’s just announced the U.S. rollout of its updated VIXIA line of HD camcorders, and the best one is the HF11. It keeps that slim and tiny form factor of its HF10 predecessor that so impressed us last January , but adds twice the internal flash memory space and a higher 24Mbps recording bitrate for even crispier HD footage. If the recording time that’s just shy of three hours won’t be enough, you can add a removable flash card to its 32GB of built-in flash memory for twice the fun. Out of the gate, this bauble might break the bank, tilting the scales at a steep $1199, but that’s bound to trend downward as time goes on. Also to ship along with this HF11 in September is the bulkier HG20 ($949) and HG21 ($1299), with similar features but more recording time due to their internal spinning hard drives. To give you an idea, the flagship HD21 can record all day on its hard disk, laying down more than 11 hours of high-quality HD. Now if they could just create a battery that would last that long. The Canon Vixia HF11 is, in many ways, a minor update to an already highly regarded camcorder. The previous generation HF10 produced some of the best looking video of the year, and definitely the sharpest. The new HF11 promises to outdo even that by increasing the bitrate, making it the first consumer camcorder to record at the AVCHD spec\'s ceiling of 24Mbps. In truth, the result is a very minor increase in video quality, and most consumers will probably not see a difference. The more compelling value-add may be the increased flash memory capacity, doubling from 16GB to 32GB. Certainly not failing to live up to its pedigree, the Canon HF11 makes a compelling camcorder. ...

An excellent choice for flash-based HD recording, the Canon Vixia HF11 gives the Sony CX7 a close run for the money and is a clear champion if you don't like the Sony's touch-screen interface. The HF11 incorporates 32GB built-in flash memory and a slot for SDHC removable flash. - EDITORS' RATING: 8.0, excellent - THE GOOD: Excellent video quality; fast focus; compact, attractive, and comfortable design. - THE BAD: Wind filter not as dependable as previous Canon models; manual focus pretty useless. - THE BOTTOM LINE: Like its sibling the HF10, Canon's flash-based Vixia HF11 delivers excellent HD video quality and performance in a tiny package. However, the HF11 delivers a bit more value for its lower price. ...

Three new Canon cams including the successor to the HF10, one of last year's best AVCHD 'corders , are now officially bound for the U.S. after details hit in Japan a few weeks back. Camcorder Info has already gotten their hands on an HF11 review unit, and liked what they saw —full HD capture at 1920x1080, dual flash storage options and image stabilization shipping this month for $1,200. The hard disk based HG20 and HG21 round out the new lineup. Camcorder Info is digging the HF11, but since the HF10 was released only 8 months ago, you can probably save some cash if the updated specs aren't important: There's little difference between the Canon HF10 and Canon HF11. The big, advertised improvement in the new generation is an increased bitrate, up from 17Mbps to 24Mbps. This makes Canon the first to produce a consumer camcorder to reach the bitrate ceiling on the AVCHD codec. When we tested the camcorders, side-by-side, in the lab and out of the lab, we were hard-pressed to see much of a difference. The average shooter will not notice anything. The HF10's performance was pretty hard to top to begin with. The second upgrade is internal memory, increasing from 16GB to 32GB of non-removable solid state capacity. This could be a value save if you don't already own a few SD/SDHC cards. If you do, you can probably save money by buying the HF10. Full Release: Canon U.S.A.
