As part of the 21st edition of the Entretiens Jacques-Cartier conference taking place in Montreal and Quebec City from Oct 3-10, 2008, Concordia University awarded an honorary doctorate to Thierry Frémaux, delegate general of the Cannes Film Festival. The ceremony took place yesterday at la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec in the presence of Quebec premier Jean Charest, as well as the mayors of Montreal and Lyon, Gérald Tremblay and Gérard Collomb. For the first time in history, seven Montreal post-secondary institutions awarded honorary doctorates at the same ceremony. The doctorates were awarded to seven well known figures from the Rhône-Alpes region of France. At the end of the ceremony, the Quebec poet Gilles Vigneault received le Prix Jacques-Cartier des Arts, in recognition of his lifetime of work. A film historian and sociologist, Frémaux is responsible for programming the Cannes Film Festival, considered the most prestigious of its kind in the world. He works closely with some of the most important filmmakers in the development of their projects, while also discovering up-and-coming talent. Even with these huge responsibilities, Frémaux has never left his role as director of the Lumière Institute in his home town of Lyon or as associate professor at l’École normale supérieure lettres et sciences humaines. Four "fully" French movies and eight co-pros with French backing are being screened. Given the weight of place, of site, in this year's crop, the latter frequently translates into product placement, aka "embedded marketing," not of Converse or Nike but of France itself--more economic exchange than organic inclusion. ... We decided that we'd get up early and try and pack in a full day of sightseeing. We almost got run over about three or four times on our way to the train station in town. The drivers aren't to be trusted even at zebra crossings and red lights you've got to look twice and it doesn't help that the cars are on the wrong side of the road. Left is right right is not right.France were having train str ... Source: www.realoops.com --- 28 days ago
