Health News Medical Marijuana Slowly Gains Ground Clinical Studies Begin to Replace Emotion with Evidence By Daniel J. DeNoon WebMD Medical News August 29, 2003 -- A sea change in science is slowly turning the tide of the medical marijuana debate. For hundreds of years, marijuana has been used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. But the herb has been illegal throughout the modern era of scientific medical research. Patients swear the drug works to relieve pain, prevent seizures, and counteract the nausea-inducing effects of cancer chemotherapy. But by today's standards, there's no definitive proof that this is so. Why not? Nearly all U.S.-funded marijuana research has looked for harmful effects from using marijuana as a recreational drug. Meanwhile, there's been little money -- and huge regulatory hurdles -- for studies of marijuana's benefits. That's now changing despite the fact that marijuana remains classed as a Schedule I drug -- a dangerous Compound with no medical uses. Why now? Evidence is beginning to break down the wall of emotion preventing medical marijuana research. Expert Panels, Breakthrough Findings It was never clear exactly how marijuana -- which scientists call Cannabis -- exerted its euphoria-inducing effects on the brain. Then, in the 1980s, a series of breakthrough studies showed that the body actually makes its own Cannabis-like compounds -- cannabinoids. Why are they there? That question led to the discovery ... A new method for lowering blood pressure (hypertension) through use of a Compound that synthesizes a Cannabis (hashish) plant component has been developed by a pharmacology Ph.D. student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem School of Pharmacy .The press broke this story in June 2006 and for his work on the cardiovascular activity of cannabinoids (chemical compounds derived from Cannabis), Yehoshua Maor was one of the winners of that year's Kaye Innovation Awards, presented on June 13 during the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's 69th meeting of the Board of Governors.CVDCardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for about one-third of all deaths in industrialized countries, and is the leading reason for visits there to physicians as well as for drug prescriptions. However, not all patients respond well to the drugs available. There is no ideal' hypotensive (blood pressure lowering) drug. ...

A Compound in oregano and basil has been shown to have antiinflammatory effects in mice. The Compound, called (E)-beta-caryophyllene or(E)-BCP, is also found in large amounts in rosemary, cinnamon, and black pepper. And Cannabis sativa , a.k.a. marijuana. The most well-studied components of marijuana, cannabinol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), exert their effects by binding to two receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 is expressed in the brain and other tissues and is responsible for the ...elevating...effects of Cannabis sativa. CB2, on the other hand is primarily found in tissues outside the brain. Activation of CB2 has been shown to inhibit inflammation. This paper describes some experiments showing that (E)-BCP binds to CB2, but not CB1. They did all the stuff you are supposed to do in the lab to demonstrate its binding qualities, then they tested the Compound in mice. They dissolved (E)-BCP in (appropriately) olive oil and fed it to mice. Then they injected the footpads of the mice with carrageenan, which makes the footpads swell. The feet of the mice that had been fed (E)-BCP had much less swelling than the mice that had been fed olive oil alone. This antiinflammatory effect was not found when they used mice in which the CB2 receptor had been knocked out , demonstrating that it was the CB2 receptor activation that was responsible for the beneficial effect. One more step toward pain relief. Not everyone who reads this blog has chronic pain, but I'll bet everyone knows someone who is affected by it. Marijuana (a member of the Cannabis family) has been used for centuries for pain relief as well as the relief of nausea, but is generally considered at best controversial, at its worst a taboo subject. A few states allow the medicinal use of Cannabis or its naturally occurring compounds such as THC aka Marinol , because of the fear of mis-use. A recent UP article hints that scientists may have synthesized a molecule that affects the brain in a way similar but more powerfully than Anandamide - a cannabinoid neurotransmitter created and found in minute, naturally occurring quantities in the brain and organs of humans and other animals. Anandamide is similar to THC (the active element in Marijuana) and binds to the same receptors and seems to create a similar response in both the central nervous system (eating, sleeping, memory, acute and inflammatory pain reception, motivation, pleasure) as well as the rest of the body including the digestive system, immune system, endocrine system and the reduction in the growth of human breast cancer cells . It also has been shown to lower blood pressure and pulse, lowers pressure in the eye and affects embryo implantation. The synthetic Compound, named AM1346, is said to be more potent and stable than it's naturally occurring counterpart Anandamide, though I d ... Source: www.medworm.com --- 90 days ago
This study aimed to give a rationale for the employment of phytocannabinoid formulations to treat neuropathic pain. It was found that a controlled Cannabis extract, containing multiple cannabinoids, in a defined ratio, and other non-cannabinoid fractions (terpenes and flavonoids) provided better antinociceptive efficacy than the single cannabinoid given alone, when tested in a rat model of neuropathic pain. The results also demonstrated that such an antihyperalgesic effect did not involve the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, whereas it was mediated by vanilloid receptors TRPV1. The non-psychoactive Compound, cannabidiol, is the only component present at a high level in the extract able to bind to this receptor: thus cannabidiol was the drug responsible for the antinociceptive behaviour observed. In addition, the results showed that after chronic oral treatment with Cannabis extract the hepatic total content of cytochrome P450 was strongly inhibited as well as the intestinal P-glycoprotein activity. It is suggested that the inhibition of hepatic metabolism determined an increased bioavailability of cannabidiol resulting in a greater effect. However, in the light of the well known antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties of terpenes and flavonoids which could significantly contribute to the therapeutic effects, it cannot be excluded that the synergism observed might be achieved also in the absence of the cytochrome P450 inhibition. On my way back from Netto (The Kuching version of UNACO), I saw this beautiful flower. Being a foreigner in a foreign land, I tend to be quite attentive about the flora here. The seeds look dangerously familiar. Just like the one that I saw in the movie. If you have never seen this plant before, this is poppy. The one that you can bleed the seed and collect the latex and process it into opium and some other drugs. Newcastle is not an poppy plantation. Poppy is never popular here as people prefers to grow hydroponic Cannabis at home. Poppy is a native plant in the European countries and I guess you can find it in many places during summer time. Here is a poppy plant just outside somebody's house. If this plant is growing in your home Compound in Malaysia, death sentence is just around the corner. Anyway, poppy is not very fertile here. The seed is much smaller than the one in the Golden triangle. Perhaps this is a harmless species of Poppy.... ... Source: 4thefirsttime.blogspot.com --- 84 days ago
For more than a few drugs, substance abuse has been an unintended consequence of having the medicine available to treat ailments. For no substance, though, are the issues of medical and recreational use as complex as they are for marijuana. In the US, decades-long attempts to reconcile illicit use to induce intoxication with its potential to help people feeling pain and discomfort has reached a crescendo at the US Supreme Court, which has decided that it is up to the federal government -- not the states -- to permit patient access to legal marijuana. Cannabis is listed as a remedy in a book on herbal medicines attributed to Shen Neng, the mythical Chinese emperor and deity. The traditional date of this book is 2737 B.C., though the work probably wasn't compiled until centuries later. Medical attention to Cannabis spiked in the 19th century. With this renewed scientific attention, however, also came a growing fondness for marijuana-induced euphoria. Backlash led to the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which effectively banned the substance in the US. In 1964, two Israeli chemists, Raphael Mechoulam and Yehiel Gaoni, isolated 1-3,4-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol (9-THC) as the active Compound in Cannabis sativa. Research into Cannabis has been on the upswing since that time. Little is known about the effectiveness of smoking marijuana on disease. "The problem is that, although Cannabis has been used in human medicine for some 4,000 years, we do not ... Source: skin-up.com --- 44 days ago
