That's the question Robert Kagan asks in this new essay . Today's so-called "realists," Kagan argues, have inverted the lessons of their predecessors: Leading realists today see the world not as Mr. Morgenthau did, as an anarchic system in which nations consistently pursue "interest defined as power," but as a world of converging interests, in which economics, not power, is the primary driving force. Thus Russia and China are not interested in expanding their power so much as in enhancing their economic well-being and security. If they use force against their neighbors, or engage in arms buildups, it is not because this is in the nature of great powers. It is because the United States or the West has provoked them. The natural state of the world is harmonious; only aggressive behavior by the United States disturbs the harmony. ... The original realists had no patience for such Candide-like optimism about the inevitable upward progress of mankind. "Whoever thinks the future is going to be easier than the past is certainly mad," wrote Mr. Kennan in 1951, six years after the most destructive war in history, five years into the Cold War, and one year into what was widely seen at the time as disastrous and seemingly hopeless American intervention in Korea. Mr. Kennan's provocative assertion aimed to jolt Americans out of their yearning to believe that the future would be different. But now it is leading realists who embrace The End of ...

English National Opera 27th June 2008 Maybe the ENO should keep away from musicals. On the Town was excellent, but, with a mostly musical rather than operatic cast, it barely counted as an opera production at all. Kismet wasn’t as bad as people said, but the fact that I was pretty much the only person who liked it shows it wasn’t exactly successful. As for Candide , what can I say? I’m not Hairy McMungo, but ‘can I have a refund?’ springs to mind. Robert Carsen’s production was well-thought out, and the gimmicks were mostly understandable to most people. Let’s ignore the fact I thought it was cringe-makingly awful. Most people found it very amusing, and Michael Levine’s designs did manage to convey quite a lot. I liked the way the stage was turned into a TV set. Conductor Ruman Gumba was excellent – the ENO orchestra played well, and occasionally managed to get some real meaning out of the music, even though most of it is total fluff. There wasn’t any really bad singing. Actor Alex Jennings, in the multiple roles of Voltaire, Dr Pangloss, and the miserable Martin was easily up to the standards of the operatically-trained performers, and completely showed them up when it came to the comedy. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that a trained actor is so much better at comedy than opera singers, but I wouldn’t have expected the difference to be that great – particularly as several members of the cast are usually brilliant at comedy The only ...

I'm not normally an opera-going sort of chap, but we popped along to see a production of Candide by the English National Opera at The London Coliseum. Voltaire's story of a young bloke hell-bent on follow his tutor’s philosophy of cheery and perpetual optimism in the face of endless personal disasters is an entertaining tale, and the performance and stage sets were spectacular and exquisite. Unfortunately, pre-show photography is completely banned in the beautiful theatre on some fuzzy grounds of "copyright," so here's a few snatched shots at the beginning and end. . Read review from The Stage ...
