A great place to view mainline railroading in the greater Chicagoland area, is far north suburban Baneckburn Illinois alongside Illinois U.S Route # 43 / Waukegan Road, just south of the intersection at Illinois U.S Route # 22 / Half Day Road. Seen here is a Canadian Pacific Railroad heavy unit grain Train, traveling southbound over the former Milwaukee Road north line with several tons of grain hoppers in tow. I photographed this digital live sound video on a quiet Sunday afternoon in December of 2009. I took a walk to the Elmwood Park Metra commuter rail station, and actually arrived at a busy time on the Canadian Pacific ex Milwaukee Road mainline. Yes! Seen here, is an eastbound Canadian Pacific freight Train, with EMD roadswitcher locomotives acquired through merger in 2008 from fallen flag regional railroads Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, and of course the affiliate Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad. The Train is passing throug the suburban Elmwood Park station near Grand and 75th Avenues. ...

CARBONDALE — Officials with Canadian National Railroad are investigating what caused a freight Train derailment in southern Illinois. No one was injured in the derailment on Sunday which shut down U.S. Route 51 near Carbondale. Traffic was back to normal today. Emergency crews were on the scene for hours to repair damage Sunday after several cars of the Train derailed around 1:30 p.m. Fire officials say one car, which contained ethyl alcohol jumped the tracks, but no nothing spilled and there wasn’t a public health risk. Hundreds of people were evacuated June 18 in Rockford after a Canadian National Train derailed and exploded near the intersection of Sandy Hollow and South Mulford roads. One woman was killed. Twelve of 74 tank cars carrying ethanol were involved in the fire. Officials, fearing more explosions, asked residents living within a half-mile to leave the area. ...

Some of the more colorful local freight trains I have come to know in the greater Chicagoland area, are some of the Canadian Pacific Railroad ones that operate on the former Milwaukee Road west line.
