The lead diesel unit in the background is a weather beaten Canadian Pacific unit that was due for a much needed paint job, while the two trailing units are former Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad locomotives acquired by the Canadian Pacific through merger in 2009. This rail line is the Canadian Pacific owned former Milwaukee Road north line. ...

Canadian National Railway will pay Illinois more than $25,000 for environmental testing of the soil and water after the June 19 derailment of a Train carrying ethanol. The payments were specified in an amended agreement between the railroad’s subsidiary, Chicago, Central & Pacific Railroad Co., and the attorney general’s office filed Dec. 16. The state and Winnebago County jointly sued the railroad in July over the environmental effects of the derailment and subsequent fire and ethanol spill. The railroad will pay $17,968.42 to the state’s oil spill response fund, and $7,519.73 to the hazardous waste fund to repay the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for six months of testing and monitoring costs. The EPA will bill the railroad quarterly for future work. The railroad also will conduct one more test of wells dug in the area to monitor drinking water quality. Special wells dug in the residential area to the north of the crash site were first tested Sept. 4; subsequent tests were done Sept. 30, Nov. 2 and Dec. 2. Another test will be performed around Jan. 4. So far, no sign of ethanol contamination has shown up in the testing, according to state officials. A dozen rail cars caught fire after the CN Train derailed at a South Mulford Road crossing that straddles the border between Rockford and Cherry Valley. The resulting explosion and fire killed one woman; the extent of a pregnant woman’s injuries caused her to miscarry, accordi ...

CARBONDALE — Officials with Canadian National Railroad are investigating what caused a freight Train derailment in southern Illinois. No one was injured in the derailment on Sunday which shut down U.S. Route 51 near Carbondale. Traffic was back to normal today. Emergency crews were on the scene for hours to repair damage Sunday after several cars of the Train derailed around 1:30 p.m. Fire officials say one car, which contained ethyl alcohol jumped the tracks, but no nothing spilled and there wasn’t a public health risk. Hundreds of people were evacuated June 18 in Rockford after a Canadian National Train derailed and exploded near the intersection of Sandy Hollow and South Mulford roads. One woman was killed. Twelve of 74 tank cars carrying ethanol were involved in the fire. Officials, fearing more explosions, asked residents living within a half-mile to leave the area. ...

Last Wednesday, about 20 cars lined the sides of the railroad tracks near the Railway Bar & Grill to catch a glimpse of the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train passing from Springfield to New Ulm. It is billed by the London Police Department Chief as “the best (shooting) range in Ontario.” At $22 million, it is certainly modern but one of the features might sit poorly with judges and civil libertarians. While police can shoot a fleeing suspect that presents an imminent threat to the public, it is relatively rare in most crimes and raises obvious questions under Tennessee v. Garner . The entire project will ultimately cost $32 million and the facility’s gun range is billed as training officers to do a range of shooting, including the item below: A shooting range that will allow officers to qualify twice-yearly to use their firearms. The room is insulated so shots can’t be heard outside, and includes targets that can move forward and backward and sideways to better simulate a fleeing suspect . The shooting range also allows officers to play recorded sounds such as shouting, sirens and gunfire, as well as flashing and dimmed lights that can better reflect a night-time or real-emergency scenario. Presumably, trainees are taught to lead the fleeing suspects by a couple of feet. The upgrade for coup de grâce shots will apparently be added later. It does have the following training film however for wounded suspects: For the full story, click here . ...

The Train is seen here adjacent to the northside of Commons Park. This is the former Illinois Central RR Iowa Division Mainline through here. ...
