|Bunsutil69: STONY MOUNTAIN, Manitoba - A 15-year-old boy working on a construction site just north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died Friday after he was buried under a mountain of searing-hot asphalt, fire officials said. The boy, too young to work on construction jobs under Manitoba labor laws, was part of a paving crew working on a parking lot in the Winnipeg community of Stony Mountain. I believe (the truck) dumped off way too much asphalt unexpectedly, said Stony Mountain fire chief Wallace Drysdale. ...... ...

We’ve talked about devices that can track teenagers before; it seems like they’re everywhere. Now they can be found right on your keychain. Most technologies on the scene monitor your teenage driver’s speed and location, while some even take a video of who is in the car. But a Canadian company is now offering the Lemur Autovision keychain. For just $99.95, parents can track their child’s maximum speed, distance traveled and excessive braking. Basically all it takes is the simple installation of a sensor box (non-GPS based) and the keychain monitor. The keychain’s LCD display will show those three statistics for each driver being monitored. This system is much less invasive on the Teen’s privacy, but still allows parents to punish their child for speeding if the cops don’t. Best of all, it’s tamper proof and PIN-protected, letting parents know of any attempts to trick the system. ...

Happy Friday! Long ago, in a cubicle far, far away... My then-podmate Lona (whose young daughter's first pet had her smitten with all things hamster) e-mailed me something that came to be known as the Hamster Dance. Created and launched by a Canadian art student 10 years ago this month, this Internet meme was a very early (and very simple) version of what we now call a "viral video" -- an infectious bit of Internet nonsense that winds up circling the globe a few million times, delighting Friday cubicle-rat procrastinators around the world. Nora is a Teen-ager now and her pet hamster long gone. But the Hamster Dance is alive, well and in multiple versions on YouTube. Click here for a close copy of the original. Back in the day, it was known as the Hampster Dance -- for the creator's pet and muse, Hampton the Hamster. Below is a massively upgraded model, sort of like what a Broadway musical might be to a high school play. Happy anniversary Hamster Dance! You changed my life, and my Fridays, forever. Click here for Hamster Dance history from Wikipedia. ...

When we assembled four teenagers to dish on Verve Girl and Faze magazines at the Big Chill last week in Toronto, they had much more to say than we could possibly fit into one column. Herewith, a look at other comments from that hot summer day and the inside scoop on Teen trends. On American and Canadian comparisons: I don't want to sound like a bitch, but Canadian magazines just aren't as cool as the American ones. Neither are the Canadian designers. I just feel like the Americans have much better taste. On how to get teenagers to read more about the environment: If it had David Beckham I'd read it! Especially if he was holding a ball on the grass.  On trusting magazine product reporters: I bought this shampoo once that Teen Vogue recommended and it made my hair greasy and fried. They don't even try the products before they recommend it, they get paid to say these things are good. On who's hot and who's not: I love Nicole Ritchie but hate Paris Hilton. Nicole Ritchie is much more respectable. Also, I hate Duffy. I think Duffy is crap. On problems at home: I have Facebook on my mobile and I use it all the time. My mom gets so mad. She's like, 'Why is your phone bill $500?!" On what should be in a Teen magazine: Every 15-year-old girl is self-conscious about their body. I always buy Health magazine and definitely want to read fitness tips. But what we're really interested in is boys. And if I'm going to read about sex I'll do it in ...

Who says the federal government can't keep up with the times? In an attempt to get down with the kids -- or, in this case, the late-Teen, early-20 crowd -- Ottawa has unveiled a rather cool-looking Web site (at least when compared to other government Internet portals) in an effort to increase the basic financial knowledge of Canadian youth. The Web site is called The Money Belt , and it is run by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. “With back-to-school around the corner and at a time when students face intense marketing efforts, the more young Canadians know about saving, spending and using credit wisely, the better equipped they’ll be to face the future,” said FCAC commissioner, Ursula Menke. "The Money Belt is a gateway to financial learning designed to help people build their knowledge and confidence in handling money and making good decisions about their finances." The FCAC commissioner added Money Belt was built for young people in mind -- the 15 to 29 crowd -- and houses a variety of interactive tools on topics such as credit cards and bank accounts, combined with other tools like polls and quizzes. The OECD has concluded that financial understanding is low among consumers across many industrialized countries, especially among the less educated, minorities, and those at the lower end of the income distribution. In a report prepared for FCAC last year , the agency was advised that improved financial literacy benefits all ...
