Filed under: Car Buying , Ford , Earnings/Financials , Canada 2009 Ford F-150 - Click above for high-res image gallery Given the state of the market, the Ford Motor Company is on a bit of a roll right now. The Blue Oval posted an 11% decline in volume for June versus the same month in 2008; a far better number than nearly every competitor from Japan or Detroit. Ford also flat-out dominated the market in the Great White North, as the Dearborn, MI-based automaker ranked number one in sales volume for the first time in 50 years. Ford outpaced perennial market leader General Motors by a substantial (for Canada) 5,000 units. Ford posted 27,408 sales for the month; a 24.6% increase over June 2008. Toyota and Honda also were in the rear view mirror, as the Japanese stalwarts managed sales declines of 17%. Chrysler was a distant fifth place, as bankruptcy and an outdated product lineup conspired to sink sales by 58% verses June 2008. Overall sales in Canada were down 13% on the month. Ford's increase in sales was due in part to a surprising 41% increase in CUV and SUV sales. The F-150 also posted a healthy 59% increase, with Ford's Edge was up 23%. Brace, Los Angeles. Just how big will the crowds be for next Tuesday's Michael Jackson tribute at Staples Center? On CNN, Jermaine Jackson expressed worry about Staples Center's ability to handle all the fans, telling Larry King: "There's 20,000 people just coming from the U.K." One silver lining, of course, is that an influx of tourism will help the city's struggling hotel industry . As of 9 am this morning, here's what the folks at reservations desks at downtown hotels were saying about bookings for early next week. Looks like the media may snatching up all the rooms. At 10 am, there's an official press announcement about the concert. Updates to follow. UPDATE : Press conference underway. Web site for registering for Jackson tribute tickets is here . LAPD saying that anyone without a ticket won't be allowed to enter the Staples vicinity on Tuesday. Hotel Figueroa : “Reservations are coming in. Over the last 24 hours, probably about 75 [reservations for people coming to the concert]. Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel : “We have definitely seen an increase. The biggest pick-up has been from the news media. Particularly the Canadian news media. There’s been an increase in the amounts for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. But we also reached out to the media. I would think once the press event today is held, you’ll see the influx of reservations [from people], particularly from overseas, but that’s just my opinion." Omni Los Angeles Ho ...

Sidney Crosby, left off the team as an 18-year-old in 2006, was among 46 players invited Thursday to the Canada Olympic hockey orientation camp next month. Also chosen were the NHL's three Staal brothers, five goaltenders and Colorado forward Joe Sakic, who turns 40 next week and would be the team's oldest player if selected. Executive director Steve Yzerman said the 23-man team won't necessarily be chosen from those attending, although all the 2002 and 2006 Olympians were in camp. Among those not selected for the Aug. 24-27 camp in Calgary are forwards Steven Stamkos, Marc Savard and Jason Spezza, goaltenders Chris Osgood, Carey Price and Marty Turco and defenseman Brian Campbell. "We spent a lot of time, had a lot of discussion," Yzerman said. "What we've tried to do is build a list and cover all of the aspects that this team will be made up of." ...

A selection of reader responses to Full Comment   Re: Latest studies show Canada is one awful country I appreciated Kelly McParland's column on how Canada under-performed in various criteria. It was a good piece of satire and a thinly veiled commentary on how media tends to pick up on negative things. It was also, though, a reminder that perspective is everything. There are some areas where the column was not ironic, in fact. We are a nation of possibilities but we are also strangely mean and cruel towards the unemployed. It is true, at least when you compare Canada to its Western European cousins and the OECD in general. We are stuck in a sort of a reactive, knee-jerk attitudinal zone whenever someone loses their job. There was not an outpouring of sympathy towards the laid-off auto workers by the rest of the public; instead they received a "the industry is obsolete, time to move on" comments from many media commentators and I'd heard many a harsh thing from among my social circle, too. It felt strange. Shouldn't we all be helping to retrain and reintegrate these guys, and not be making a bad situation worse? I also know, based on experience from travelling and living in Europe, that most Canadians have access to a very mediocre health care system. It is not what it used to be and it differs widely according to what community one lives in. Try to get a family doctor in most places - tracking down a GP who'd take you has become fairly ...
