Do you block your phone number from appearing on Caller ID? If so, don't count on it. At The Last HOPE hacker conference, Kevin Mitnick , arguably the most famous hacker of all, demonstrated how call blocking can be hacked, and the hidden phone number exposed. The hack starts with ... ...

Filed under: Cellphones , Misc. Gadgets Let's say for some reason someone has his or her Caller ID blocked and is calling you all the time. Let's then say you really want to know who that person is for, you know, whatever reason -- not that we'd know anything about that. Some crafty phreaker types have come up with a way to do this using an enterprise-spec asterisk box and a SIP trunk provider. In a demonstration video, a hacker tweaks said asterisk box with some new configurations to strip out privacy flags, forward the call to another number, and ultimately reveal Caller ID information which, surprisingly, is still available. This isn't meant to be easy, but if the terms "prepend," "SIP trunk," and "asterisk box" don't scare you away, go ahead and watch the video after the break. Big disclaimer: we're not responsible for your broken gear, jail time, or restraining orders. So on May 6 I put in a ticket to correct the spelling of my last name on Outgoing Caller ID. On May 22 I received a response that the correction was submitted and it would take two to five weeks to populate databases. Today (July 6) I checked the Caller ID by calling myself on a different line. Now only the first letter of my last name appears. The Caller ID displays my first name and the initial of my last name. I reopened the ticket today. And while I was at it I put in a ticket that *123 has stopped working for me. One more year of this nonsense... ...

On Tuesday, July 8, IET-Communications Resources turned on the Caller ID feature for Enabled Voicemail (EVM). This new feature provides the EVM email subject line with all available Caller ID information from the calling telephone (unless the Caller has activated Caller ID blocking or the information is removed in route). ...

I've been trying to get YAC and telnet working all weekend and have failed: I've done alot of web research, but cant seem to get it going. Do I need to solder a new PRON to my tivo mother board for this to work? I succesfully unzipped and excecuted the YAC on my FAT32 partition. However when I mount the TIVO drive first of all, I have no idea how to get to the ROOT. I do the typical mkdir /mnt/dos then mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos But I have no clue where this directory is residing... is it root? when I try to copy the YAC file from the FAT32 partition to the TIVO drive /mnt/dos directory I run it I get a binary file error (I'm thinking because I need to unzip it first to the TIVO drive itself and not do a copy from a FAT32 partition?) Is there an easier way to get my Tivo to listen? Any help you can provide would be appreciated, I've spent all weekend trying to do this and gain telnet ability to my TIVO I I've failed at both. thanks Sean. ...

When a call is delivered to the recipient's telephone carrier, the calling number is delivered via the SS7 network. The recipient's carrier [i:cefe88c06a]may[/i:cefe88c06a] supply a name for display with the number, but to do so, the terminating carrier must perform a database lookup to translate the calling number to a name. Different terminating carriers look this information up in different databases. When I call a Cablevision (Optimum voice) subscriber from my Vonage line, the recipient gets my name. When I call a Verizon subscriber from the same Vonage line, the recipient gets my number in both the number and name fields. Before my line was ported from Verizon to Vonage, Verizon subscribers got my name mis-spelled, while Cablevision subscribers got it correctly. I'm not sure where Vonage performs this lookup on inbound calls, or how/when they update the name databases used by other carriers who terminate calls from Vonage. But I believe these are the variables that cause the effects reported in this thread. ...

It's just too easy to spoof Caller ID. I wouldn't blame the problem with just VOIP carriers, as there are other ways. I wouldn't trust what I see displayed on a Caller ID box if my life depended on it. ...

I am quite new to VoIP, but I purchased the SPA-3102 in order to be able to block anonymous calls, as this service isn't available in Israel. After connecting to my router, I found out that it cannot resolve the PSTN CID. I am not quite sure of Bezeq's (the Israeli telco) settings, there might be special settings. I tried to check the Caller ID service with another dect telephone, which worked fine. Here are the settings of my SPA-3102 (zipped mht file) ( spa.zip ). Can anyone help me to get around this? ...

Normally, punching *67 should block Caller ID information being passed through to a receiving Caller. But, as security consultant Kevin Mitnick has demonstrated and Digium CTO Mark Spencer explains, it's not 100 percent foolproof. At The Last HOPE hacker conference over the weekend, Mitnick demonstrated how an appropriately configured Asterisk box and a suitable SIP trunking service can be used to deliver Caller ID information even on inbound calls that have a "Private" flag set. "There are legitimate reasons why you need to set the Caller ID to normal [and carry that information forward,]" said Digium CTO Mark Spencer. "If, for example, I'm in an enterprise environment and I want to have calls forwarded [from my office number] to my cell phone, [the PBX] needs that information." Mitnick used the "enterprise class" VoIP/SIP trunking provider FlowRoute to get a phone number (DID) and service that would deliver all of the call information to an Asterisk server.  The Asterisk server is simply setup/scripted to pass along all Caller ID information for inbound calls regardless of the setting of the privacy flag on the call. Spencer also noted that Caller ID information is also carried along and recorded for "private" calls to toll free numbers; the information is necessary for proper billing. Mark is not happy with the use of Asterisk for questionable uses, but since it is open source, there is little he can do about it. "I hate to sa ...
