Some DSL and Cable Modems provide only a single USB port for connecting to a home network. However, older broadband routers, Ethernet switches and desktop computers lack USB ports. I was told I can buy a Cable modem and connect it the same day I order Internet for the first time. Which modem is the best one I can buy online or at a local retail store? Are there any respective tweaks or firmware upgrades to enhance or provide stable performance? Or, is it better to just lease the one they give me? I think there's an FAQ about all the different Modems, but I prefer to hear personal experiences or something that's highly recommended. ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 15 days ago
I had access to the the Management and Diagnostic Console for a while and then I went to setup the router to use with my Cable modem. I went to the setup page and used the key code for Cable Modems and the modem/router (2wire) restarted. After it restarted the MDC password I used before doesn't work anymore. How is it possible that it changed? I was using the telus password is there another default password that I am unaware of? ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 36 days ago
When we buy Comcast Digital Cable service and hook up to our home theater, we are buying a signal from their headend. It is delivered to the side of my house to a grounded passthru. What I have been trying to find out is what is the signal stength of the supplied signal supposed to be? I have heard that it is supposed to be 105dB and that splitters/connectors remove about 6dB per. How do I find out what my monthly payment should be delivering as far as signal strength and what is required by the various components(Modems, VCRs, Dolby Box, HD set). I realize S/N can be a problem but let us assume that it is ok. I can measure a gallon of gas, a pound of hamburger or a dozen hot dog buns. How do I as a consumer check on my purchase from Comcast? Buy a $1,000 meter? Thanks from a confused consumer, Mortie ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 31 days ago
I just changed my Cable internet to internet and phone. I had to change to a telephony modem. I now have an Arris 502g, and I cannot get it to work my Linksys wireless router. It is very frustrating. I can get the modem to work with the computer itself, but it will not work with the router. I have tried disconnecting the Modems and hooking it all back up and resetting, several times. Could some one please help? Thanks. ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 12 days ago
We are considering wireless internet for each of 100+ units at our time share resort, probably via our Cable TV provider. We may also provide VoIP telephone service soon after. I don't know if I need to install a separate modem/router in each unit, or a gateway router and VoIP box in each unit, or just what equipment will be the best application to setup and manage. Integrated units are desirable so we can reduce the number of power supplies needed to power everything. Our owners are asking for wireless internet access, and we may want to provide VoIP phone service in the future. So, I need to get the hardware necessary to set all this up. Any suggestions? Gateway Modems? Cable Modems + VoIP routers? ... Source: www.dslreports.com --- 29 days ago
Here is Des Moines Iowa Mediacom was and still is using Motorola HD DVR boxes. However it seems that they have gone with a new company for a few of their boxes. When we got new service installed we got some very small boxes that were not very big. Then we just upgraded to HD-DVR and got boxes made by PACE. I looked up our model when I got it home seeing that they have locked in CableCARD in them. What I was really shocked to learn is these boxes have built in DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modems in them. I wonder if Mediacom switched suppliers because Motorola could not keep up with Mediacom demand. I wonder if these built in Cable Modems are being used for anything else. Sure would be nice not to have to use wireless network, when I could just plug in to my Cable box. http://www.pace.com/corporate/products/productDetails.asp?nav=products&productID=DCABLE-TDC778X%20Tahoe ... I just moved into a new apartment and got NC Time Warner Cable RR. We've currently got a wireless router in our living room connected to the Cable modem that comes in. I thought that a wireless network card for my desktop system in my room would be enough to connect reliably, but I'm very disappointed to realize that my connection barely stays up for more than a couple minutes and the signal strength is extra-extra-low. I realized I have a Cable jack in my room that works with a tv, and I figure that I should also then be able to attach another Cable modem here and just hardwire my computer instead of screwing around with wireless network issues in connectivity. I know that running an ethernet Cable from the living room router to my bedroom would work for sure but I don't want to drape cords across the apartment and have no real way to run a Cable through the walls. That's more effort than I want to put into this. So my question is this: Is there any reason why my scheme of putting a second coax Cable modem router into our apartment would not work?? Thanks!! ... I'm leasing a house from a woman who has a smaller house next in the same yard. She has the Cable going to the smaller house. When I moved in I put the Cable bill in my name but the wiring is still run. I don't mind if someone has Cable but the internet worries me. Can they hook up a Cable modem to the line and get high speed internet through my line? I have the Cox issued modem and the internet is blazing fast without any issues. I'm worried that if they can hook up a modem they could engage in illegal file sharing, etc.. and I would be held accountable. If they could do this is there a way to block it? The owner of the house wants the Cable to remain in place and she actually doesn't mind them using her wireless that's in a building next to the house with decent reception. ... Around 9:30PM EDT Tuesday 15-Jul-2008, my Cable modem (HFC MAC: 00:0E:5C:01:D8:C4) went off-line. For me, this is fortunately a very rare occurrence. I called RCN tech support, and the representative indicated that 272 Modems were offline, so she opened a ticket to "RCN upper management". In the hours following, my modem has been coming online for brief periods, and then going back offline. With any luck, I'll be able to post this message during one of the online windows. I'd appreciate one of the RCN folks on the forum following-up in the AM, to make sure that whatever needs fixing has been fixed or gets fixed. Thanks much. ...
