Filed under: Cellphones Brace yourself, US-based Touch Dual lovers -- the handset that your Japanese / European friends have been taunting you with for months is finally making the trip stateside. Slated to launch "later this quarter" (at Best Buy initially, of all places), the US Touch Dual will come rocking Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional , TouchFLO, Office Mobile, Live HTC Home, a 2-megapixel camera, quad-band GSM support and HSDPA connectivity. Sadly, HTC didn't give us the pleasure of knowing a price, but we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more exact details surrounding the release.   Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

This week (April 1-3) was the CTIA Wireless 2008 show in Las Vegas. All week TMCnet has been reporting on news from the show, which is put on (as the name suggests) by CTIA, an organization whose acronym formerly stood for “Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Assocation,” but now simply goes by CTIA  —  The Wireless Association.   The show’s Web site has a full roster of news highlights from this week, but here are a few that caught my eye from TMCnet’s coverage .   Nortel Shows How Carriers Can Deliver Better, Faster Networks to Reach True Mobile Broadband   40,000 Reasons for Wireless Recycling   Mobile Industry Adds 22 Million Net New Customers in 2007   AT & T Intros New Music Application and Extended Napster Coverage   Sprint and Sierra Wireless to Launch Nation's Smallest Mobile Broadband USB Modem   Ericsson demonstrates world-first end-to-end HSPA Evolution technology for speeds of up to 42 Mbps   For even more coverage of the show, check out the blogs for Rich Tehrani and Greg Galitzine . Motorola will be ousting its H680 Bluetooth headset with the H690, featuring dual microphones and echo-reducing software that Motorola claims to deliver a more crisp call for recipients, while the redesigned earbud is meant to be easier on your ear in the long run. Currently, Motorola has pegged a 5.5 hour talktime to the headset. As for the ROKR EQ3, this speaker is a first for Motorola. Targeting music-centric handsets like the ROKR E8 and PMPs, the EQ3 folds out from a travel-sized block, connecting to the (thankfully) 3.5mm headphone jack or through Bluetooth. A quartet of AAA batteries will be able to power the EQ3 up to 12 hours. Both the H690 and EQ3 will ship this spring, with no word on pricing as at press time. At the CTIA trade show today, Microsoft announced a new version of Internet Explorer Mobile for Windows Mobile devices - yes, newer than the one included with Windows Mobile 6.1 (which was itself just released today.) According to Microsoft, "updated IE Mobile" will support Adobe's Flash, Microsoft's Silverlight and H.264 streaming, making it possible for Windows Mobile device users to surf rich media Web sites. The new version will also make it easier to "view full screen Web pages," according to Microsoft's press release. Microsoft spokesman Mark Mohammadpour said the update will be available the third quarter of this year, but that Microsoft and its carrier and manufacturer partners were still working out how to deliver it. So we don't know yet whether existing WM devices will be able to download the new browser, or whether you'll have to buy a new device. With the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade, IE Mobile got the ability to zoom in and out of pages for easier navigation, and it's a bit faster than it used to be. But it still mangles tables and provides an inferior Web experience compared to Nokia's and Apple's mobile browsers, which are both basically desktop quality. Fortunately, Windows Mobile device owners have alternatives - most notably the excellent Opera Mobile , but also Skyfire , which uses some server-side magic to appear to support Flash. We'll see if a complete overhaul can put IE Mobile back in the front ranks ...

Sneaking into the show floor before the show starts is a time honored tradition. Popular enough that, thus far anyway, the folks here know enough not to put their secret stuff out yet. Still, we managed to sneak this pic of the Moto Q9c in green. It actually looks very nice and glossy in person. Otherwise it's just a ton of set up, a couple of places chatting up their booth employees, and enough forklifts to move a small down in less than an hour. ...
