Event Date: Aug 20, 2008 CDUCS is the latest Financial 2000 application which facilitates the gathering of necessary data for the California Schools Information Services (CSIS) state reporting. With increasing CSIS reporting requirements, including data relating to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, CDUCS provides a solution for joining any student system with the HR System (PC2000) and the County Credential System for the purpose of creating CSIS Staff submission files; thus eliminating the need for redundant data entry of staff data into the student system. ...

The University of Tennessee's National Forensic Academy -- one of the nation's premier training grounds for crime scene investigators -- held a ribbon "explosion" ceremony Monday to open its new training facility at 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Speakers for Monday's event included  UT President John Petersen; Hank Dye, UT vice president for public and government relations; William "Bill" Bass, renowned forensic anthropologist; U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Third District; Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn; and Joe Haralson, a Texas Ranger and past NFA class president. "It's an exciting day," Dye said in opening remarks. Dye talked about the NFA's beginnings and said UT was looking for a home for the training facility two years ago. Since 2001, 320 law enforcement professional and crime scene investigators from 48 states and Iceland have completed the 10-week academy. The new facility is housed in a building donated to the university by Guilford Glazer, a benefactor who formerly lived in the area but now lives in California. The building also houses other UT programs, including those of the Law Enforcement Innovation Center. The facility is located on the Turnpike between Taco Bell and Applebee's. The new training facility includes a classroom, laboratory, photography lab, and a specially designed spatter room where CSIS can learn to better evaluate evidence at crime scenes. The NFA is a program of the LEIC's National Fore ...

The Navy does not have a workable strategy or know how to handle its shipbuilding plans, and senior Navy officials should be held accountable for this, says one of Washington's most august strategic thinkers, Tony Cordesman. "Unrealistic force plans, overoptimistic cost estimates, unrealistic projections of technical feasibility, and inadequate program management have created an unaffordable ship building program, led the Navy to phase out capable ships for new ships it cannot fund, and threaten the US Navy’s ability to implement an effective maritime strategy." write Cordesman and his co-author. ...

Queue up your "all good things" clichés, dear readers, because the end of August brings an end to the Macalope's time at CNET. It's been a great run, if something of an odd relationship. She: long-time serious Internet news source. He: short-time mythical creature with a flair for the dramatic. Can they live in a small Manhattan apartment together?! The answer appears to be "for a while". It's not so much that there isn't still love, it's just that we've grown apart. CNET has undergone some substantial changes since the Macalope's arrival, particularly having been acquired by CBS. The Macalope distinctly remembers saying to himself in the shower one morning "Is CBS one of the good giant media conglomerates or one of the bad ones? Does accepting money from a company whose logo looks like the Eye of Sauron present any ethical dilemmas? How many CSIS does the world need, anyway? Ooh, look, peppermint fur shampoo!" To be perfectly clear, CNET is the one that's decided to move on with its life. But it's an amicable breakup (for the curious, the lack of posting recently was really due to a vacation, not a late-inning snub) and we even had a few laughs while we sipped wine and divided our CDs. "The Spin Doctors?! Ha-ha! What were we thinking?! I think this one's yours !" Frankly, he of the antlers is surprised it didn't happen sooner. If you want to find him, he'll be back at his old digs for the time being, the place with the URL that's much ...

General Colin Powell has shrugged off good efforts by the Obama campaign to nudge his support into the open -- but while it can be understood that Obama's agents would try to sign Powell up, what does Bill Kristol have in mind stating that he expects Powell to tilt towards Obama ? Earlier today, Huffington Post 's Seth Colter Walls quoted former national security advisor and CSIS Trustee Zbigniew Brzezinski saying that he expected Colin Powell to endorse Obama. Bill Kristol went a step further and said that he also expects the former Secretary of State to show up in Denver at the Democratic National Convention. When I queried General Powell's office today, I received this statement from his office: I am not attending any conventions and I have not decided who I am going to vote for. I have no idea why Bill Kristol started this rumor chain Others received the same message . So, what is Bill Kristol up to? I have a hunch -- but it's completely speculative. Since Steve Schmidt was given the operative reigns of the McCain campaign , Schmidt has been pushing hard for flamboyant, dramatic showdowns to contrast McCain from Obama. He helped orchestrate the ongoing political theater on oil drilling. And Schmidt and his team have grabbed the Russia-Georgia conflict and tried to ratchet higher US-Russian tension rather than stand down, again to differentiate the McCain camp from what they hope is perceived as a more dovish Obama position. Can 10Best Cars–winning bones translate to 5Best Trucks glory? We’ll see soon. BY JARED GALL Marketing CSIS examining the Volkswagen Tiguan naming catastrophe need look all the way to Europe, where, as we’ve reported, the name was selected by readers of Germany’sAuto Bild magazine from a pool of equally weird alternatives. It is, VW, tells us, a combination of the German words for “tiger” and “iguana.” Either nobody in the higher echelons of management noticed, or they just didn’t care that it also works as a combination of theEnglish words for “tiger” and “iguana.” As inspiration for a model name, the tiger makes sense—regal, beautiful, and powerful; the iguana, not so much. Quite lazy in captivity, young iguanas eat bugs and the feces of adults—not exactly the cuddly sort of spokes-animal that will steal mountains of sales from the Honda CR-V . But did you know that green iguanas have a third eye on the top of their heads? Third Eye (Not) Blind Called a parietal eye, it can’t form images like a normal eye, but it can sense light and movement, which makes it particularly useful for avoiding airborne predators. Perhaps this is why Volkswagen chose to incorporate the lizard into its SUV name; the Tiguan’s optional sunroof is immense and allows occupants to track winged threats and enjoy passing mountains and trees with equal ease. So yesterday was a slow day and this ThisNexter settled in to watch one of the billion CSIS  that are on at any given time. To my surprise it wasn’t the same old thing and I actually learned something (and no, it wasn’t that they never turn on a light when they enter a dark crime scene). This episode of CSI: New York was all about the real world killing of a woman who was a cyber celebrity in the virtual world game Second Life. The twist: she was dressed up as her avatar. This is something called cosplay or costume play. The twist: it isn’t just about dressing up - it is about taking on the personality of the character you are dressing up as. It is particularly common in Japan and among anime fans. Cosplay popping up more and more in Second Life circles - especially among those users that chose to design their avatars to look unusual and not like themselves. People are getting scary good at replicating the unreal! Just check out the photo.  So how do you get involved in this burgeoning culture? Step one is obviously to create an avatar or pick another character you’d like to emulate then you need to get some gear! This is where ThisNext comes in -  Here are a few things to get you started!  CosPlay: A Novice’s Overview Shopcast powered by ThisNext Get this for your blog or website ...

Just in... As ET confirmed on Monday, Laurence Fishburne is joining the cast of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." What he isn't doing -- at least not initially -- is replacing William Petersen 's character, Gil Grissom, as head of the CSI unit. Rather, Fishburne, whose character has yet to be named and is simply called "The Professor" right now, will be joining the team as a CSI Level 1, which is an entry level for the job. "You have a team made up of a supervisor, Catherine Willows ( Marg Helgenberger ); a CSI Level 3 ready to be a supervisor Nick Stokes ( George Eads ); plus you have Greg Sanders ( Eric Szmanda ) and Lauren Lee Smith, who is joining the cast in episode three of this season," explains executive producer Carol Mendelsohn . The Professor, so nicknamed because when he meets the team he is teaching college, has a background as a research pathologist, but for some reason, he was forced out of that career -- some good mystery here we're sure – and he became a college lecturer. In episode nine of the new season, he gets involved with the CSIS on a case -- and will work extensively with Grissom in that episode and the following one, so there will be an overlap between the two characters. ...

During a panel discussion at the Black Hat conference, four members from a U.S. private organization called " Commission on Cyber Security for the 44th Presidency ," established by Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), sought input from the security community as part of their mandate to "develop recommendations for a comprehensive strategy to improve cyber security in federal systems and in critical infrastructure". "The CSIS panel is composed mostly of industry, government, and ex-government types. Among the other members: Mary Ann Davidson, Oracle's chief security officer; Doug Maughan, a Homeland Security program manager; Will Pelgrin of New York's cybersecurity office; Phil Reitinger, a Microsoft security strategist; and Amit Yoran, chairman of NetWitness and a former Homeland Security official," reports Declan McCullagh . "The commission plans to publish the final report in 'early November' and, perhaps, an earlier draft for public comment." Cyber Security members who spoke at the Black Hat conference on Wednesday were Tom Kellermann of Core Security Technologies, Marcus Sachs, Verizon's director of national security policy, Jerry Dixon, director of analysis at Team Cymru, and Peter Allor, an IBM security program manager. ...
