Before I pull the trigger buying an AMD 5600 AM2 (ADO5600IAA5DO) 65 watt version ($84 delivered) I've got a quick question for you all. I currently have an AMD 4400 AM2 in a Gigabyte S series MoBo (GA-M61P-S3) running Vista Home with no issues. I upgraded this once from a 3800 AM2 and had no issues, just had to put Vista in and let it do its thing for a while. Will I get the same easy upgrade results going to the 5600? I really don't want to have to format the HD and would probably just skip it if there are known problems/issues. I don't want the 6000 or 6400 because of the double power usage before someone asks. While using an AMD Barcelona server to create a portable benchmarking kit, InfoWorld's Tom Yager discovered something unexpected: "I could incur variances in some benchmark tests ranging from 10 to 60 percent through combined manipulation of the server's BIOS settings, BIOS version, compiler flags, and OS release." Yager put this matter to AMD's performance engineers and was told he was seeing an effect widely known among CPU engineers, but seldom communicated to IT - that the performance envelope of a CPU is cast in silicon, but is sculpted in software. The Intel Larrabee is still in concept design stages as of press time, but data gathered from a recent press conference from the Larrabee project's top engineer, Dr. Larry Seller, has lead many to believe that the CPU will have a graphics processing unit integrated on die - or at least an architecture for graphics processing. According to the tech wizards at AnandTech, the Larrabee will still be based on the Pentium architecture (x86), although it will be a multi-core (many have called it "many core") processor of an unknown number of cores and be realized as a data parallel processing powerhouse (think Cell BE). Now the general notion of what the Larrabee is supposed to do is often confused, thanks to the rumors of this mythical CPU-with-GPU that ran amok. Now that the principle facts are known, it appears that Larabee was not designed essentially to be a replacement for dedicated graphics computing. Don't get us wrong: the Larabee can perform graphics rendering on its own, but it's not expected to defeat discrete graphics solutions by much. In fact, the first few details of what the Larrabee will do involves a tie-in of deferred tile-based rendering (ala Imagination Technologies' PowerVR graphics chip) and a back-end frame buffer rendering process and neither promises much in the way of quality. The multi-core CPU, however, will have a fully coherent memory subsystem for its multi-chip setup, and from here you get a clearer id ...
