Nov 2nd CEO Summit on the US economy , sponsored by the WALL STREET JOURNAL .. Hi Doug , I figure your reading this as it pertains exclusively to you … To those who aren’t aware , Doug parker will be speaking at a round table/ Summit of top American CEO’s from the united states … we’re talking the cream of the crop here , the movers and the shakers .. The treasure secretary is tentatively scheduled to be there (althou I doubt he will, due to the current national emergency ). The former treasury secretary is also to be in attendance … I believe that this may well be us airways most important media exposure of all time …. With the US economy tanking faster than a ( use your imagination and insert clever antidote here ) we may have only ONE chance left to impress ourselves upon the GOVERNMENT and the financial community .. First and foremost I mention the government because I believe in my personal uneducated view (that I have held and proponed upon for the last year ) that the airline industry will become so weakened by the lack of business due to a sever depression that our ONLY hope of survival is nationalization (thank god we carry the flag on our planes , shirts and office memo’s ) … if parker can ingrain us with the government and public by talking about what great pride we take in being number one , our pride in our country and our nation wide love of community service ,then we will have done the best we can in ...

At this year's Consumer Electronics Association CEO Summit--held earlier this summer in beautiful Playa Del Carmen, Mexico--Social Technologies' futurist Andy Hines was part of an all-star panel that included Brett Bonthron of Microsoft, Michael Tchong of Ubercool, and Jennifer Wong of Muse. The topic of this year's annual meeting, which drew CEOs from many Top US firms, was "Trend Watching: The Scene on the Streets and Predictions for Tomorrow." The event drew attention from TWICE magazine's Steve Smith , who wrote: In giving an overview of the subject, Bonthron said there is an "opportunity in improving the customer experience" for retailers and manufacturers. "Consumers are looking for a more personal experience, a human face on your operation." He noted, "Retailers can certainly do it," and manufacturers can do it with "a personal conversation" via aspects of the Web, with social-networking sites, blogs on their own sites and other means. "There is tremendous customer experience that consumers really crave." Hines noted the need for personalization that Bonthron discussed has evolved over the years beginning with "the Woodstock experience of self-expression." Back then it was in the fringe, but now it is mainstream with consumers seeking "self-expression via products and services they buy." That attitude, and the way they use devices and the Web, is "driving a lot of the changes towards meaning and self-expression" in the marketpla ...

The comments made by the partners of Sequoia Capital at their recently held "CEO Summit" have been widely covered by leaks to numerous bloggers. These bloggers have disseminated the details and spread the contagion of the sentiments to the public at large, unfortunately running the risk that the words become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Without challenging the comments, which expressed a heightened degree of doom and gloom for the economic prospects of young start-up companies particularly, I do think it calls for a somewhat more restrained response on the outlook and required action before throwing the baby out with the bath water. Certainly, we are going through a period of enormous economic and political uncertainty. The loss of confidence, primarily in our financial system, as a result of the excess of the past five to ten years (if not longer -- we may never know how long some of the flawed practices have been going on) is one of the leading contributors. We are also at the moment looking for leadership on the political front and both because of very low public support for the president and because we are in the midst of a heated election for his successor, we have no real voice of authority to provide some guidance, reassurance, and inspirational confidence that the bus has a driver who knows where he is going. Nevertheless, aside from an over inflated housing boom that had to collapse sooner or later and a complicated finan ...

And while Sequoia and other left-coast VC firms are asking their firms to tighten up, and strategically leaking their own advice about surviving the economic downturn (nevermind their investments into some ridiculous companies that don't need to survive this anyway), our own former investor Alan Patricof , founder and managing director of Greycroft Partners, is asking for some restraint in the doom and gloom. His main advice: "This is not a time to panic, cut off all investment in the future, and burrow into a dark hole." The full statement from Patricof, below: "The comments made by the partners of Sequoia Capital at their recently held 'CEO Summit' have been widely covered by leaks to numerous bloggers. The loss of confidence, primarily in our financial system, as a result of the excess of the past five to ten years (if not longer - we may never know ...
