Fortune gets a first crack at doing a story on MySpace Music, which is launching in its new avatar next week. And while the News Corp ( NYSE: NWS ). subsidiary has been setting expectations on the music service sky-high with teasers, other established competitors like Imeem have been out in front on a PR offensive talking about how their services stack up in the market, their points of differentiation and their lead. Some major points about the service and the challenges: -- Three of the Big Four music companies: Universal, SonyBMG, and Warner Music are in the JV -- Any song from the catalogs of the three music giants free. -- On-screen ads along with the music. -- Users will be able to create playlists on their own pages made up of tracks from any major artists. -- If listeners really like a particular song, they can buy it with one click and have it routed immediately to iTunes or Windows Media Player via a download service created by Amazon. -- Amazon ( NSDQ: AMZN ) is very hopeful that this will help increase its share of music market, but with an iTunes link as well in the service, would be difficult. -- Chris DeWolfe believes that MySpace Music could generate enough money through ad Sales, downloads, and eventually music-related e-commerce like T-shirt and concert ticket Sales to put the industry back on its feet again . -- DeWolfe is completely confident that this service would help replace lost CD Sales. Imeem CEO Dalton ...

Filed under: Products and services , Consumer experience , Apple Inc (AAPL) , Marketing and advertising , Sony Corp ADR (SNE) , Tech for the rest of us It's been almost a year since Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE ) launched the music downloading platform Platinum Music Pass in direct competition with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL )'s iTunes Store, the largest and most successful downloading store. In the months since the program was announced and first released, it has not been reviewed very favorably . Nevertheless, this user found it very exciting and an inventive way to combat declining music Sales based on CD profits and the strong grip store's like iTunes have on the market. When it was released, critics and industry "pros" derided the credit card-like download albums as a step backward (you could easily download an album from iTunes without the cards), overpriced (the set price of the cards is $12.99), and a complete misstep in a market and economy obsessed with environment-friendly products (the cards are only available from physical retailers). Nevertheless, and these problems aside, the cards do offer those music listeners who are shopping for groceries or out buying other goods the chance to buy a downloadable album without the hassle of the CD. Critics overlooked the mass appeal and sale capability of the cards in grocery stores and other stores since the target groups are not listeners who go out to simply buy an album, etc. ...

To: Crecente From: Bashcraft RE: Tokyo! In Coming! One thing that always surprises me about Japan is how accepted English music is here. Like, for example, today I went to the record store and bought the new Oasis album. (It's pretty good!) The album won't even be released until like next week in the States. And the CD has tons of extra tracks and whatnot. Always thought that was kind of amazing that bands singing in a language that most people don't have a good grasp of were so popular. I mean shucks, I've seen Ian Brown in concert twice here. Don't even think he tours in the US! Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360 , RPGs Square Enix's The Last Remnant will be available in a special edition Xbox 360 bundle when it launches Nov. 20 in Japan. The box comes with the standard stuff, but includes DVD remote, game, faceplate and soundtrack CD for around $331 - the bundle saves about $30 off the cost of the standalone game plus system. As Microsoft reaches for the million Xbox 360 sold mark in Japan, we're already prepared for another Sales surge anomaly when The Last Remnant releases late next month. We've seen Microsoft's console receive a Sales spike twice recently with exclusive JRPG releases of Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery . However, unlike those other titles, The Last Remnant is not an Xbox 360 exclusive and will be available on PS3 at a later date .
