FiggyOO writes "For those of you who witnessed the launch of SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket, launch 3, you will be glad to hear that SpaceX has received a license to launch from space complex 40 (SLC-40) at CAPE CANAVERAL Air Force Station on the Florida coast. This Launch complex is just south of launch pads 39A and 39B which have been used to launch the space shuttles, and will continue in that role for a few more years. This launch complex will enable SpaceX to launch the much-anticipated Falcon 9 rocket, which will eventually carry the Dragon capsule. In doing so, SpaceX hopes to fill the void between the end of the shuttle program and the coming of the Constellation. They have already begun moving into the launch complex, including moving a 125,000 gallon liquid oxygen tank on the back of a semi." We've been following Elon Musk's SpaceX for years. Kaitlyn Allen, a 2007 fellowship recipient and third year Ocean Engineering Ph.D. student at the University of Maine, Orono recently assisted in a research project with Leviathan Legacy, a non-profit marine mammal research group in CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida at the NASA training and testing facility.  Her fieldwork was conducted at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. At Leviathan Legacy, she conducted work in field photoidentification of Florida manatees.  Her responsibilities included deploying and retreiving acoustic buoy networks, collecting and analyzing hydrographic information for the creation of sound speed velocity profiles,and conducting field tests and analyzing behavioral results from those tests to determine the response of Florida manatees to a parametric acoustic alarm. Kaitlyn's MSGC fellowship project titled "A Right Whale Shipstrike Mortality Risk Assessment for the Bay of Fundy" and subsequent report and presentations, led to her internship at Leviathan Legacy. Since Ms. Allen's fellowship from MSGC, she also received a National Science Foundation IGERT Sensor Science and Informatics Fellow where her responsibilities included completing an additional 15 credit hours of graduate coursework, conducting 20 hours per week of research, completing a doctoral level thesis on sensor technology development and collaborating with an international lab during her graduate career.
