The Butthole Surfers fulfilled their volatile reputation at their first New York concert in years, forcing themselves back into the spotlight. For one night, New York City was thrown back to 1987. In an age where the trendy have become hypersensitive and hyper-ironic, where rent in the East Village is at levels unimaginable a quarter century ago, Webster Hall had a searing reminder of indie rock’s more volatile roots that’s about as far from today’s Sufjan Stevens, Zach... ...

Avid angler Dean Ween's been hooking fish on his online show Brownie Troop F.S. for a few months, but this must be the first time he (or anyone) went fishing in Asbury Park with the Butthole Surfers. Good times. Or, as Dean puts it: "Fishing with Butthole Surfers. It really doesn't get any browner." See what they catch here . ...

Well, that didn't take long. Over the weekend, Rocks Off learned the Butthole Surfers show we reported last week as happening at Fitzgerald's Thursday, October 23, has now been moved to Meridian. Same day, though. The reason we were given is that, in typically vague music-biz jargon, there was a "misunderstanding" between the band, its management and the venues, which pretty much means it comes down to money. Capacity-wise, Meridian is more in line with the other venues the reunited Texas psych-punk legends - whose lineup of Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, Jeff Pinkus, King Coffy and Teresa Taylor is touring together for the first time since 1989 -are playing on this Texas leg: Austin's Stubb's (for a September 27 Austin City Limits festival afterparty) and Dallas' Granada Theater October 22. Ticket prices are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, available at the club's Web site starting Thursday. Even with the increased capacity, considering the Surfers haven't toured since 2002 (when they did play Fitz's in an absolute steambath of a show), Rocks Off will be very surprised if the show doesn't sell out. - Chris Gray ...

I first started getting interested in alternative music in the mid-1980’s. My over-arching memory of that time were the glowing reviews that three particular US hardcore bands received in the sadly defunct RAM weekly music rag. RAM was Australia’s version of NME but with better writing and less of a bandwagon jumping habit which pre-internets was [...] ...

Remember The Butthole Surfers? Well they’re back, or at least they were before frontman Gibby Haynes attacked the soundman at their Webster Hall show in New York. What sparked such an altercation, you ask? The guy wouldn’t turn his monitor mix up. Growing increasingly agitated towards the second half of the 90-minute gig, Haynes walked [...] ...

So, another reunion gig but who are the ‘Butthole Surfers‘? For the uninitiated, this is a good place to start for getting a feel for the Texan born psychedelia alt-rock lunatics who were one of the more unique bands emerging from the American post-punk scene in the mid 1980’s. I’m not their biggest fan, I have [...] ...

I FIND out about the gig just two days beforehand, by chance. The Butthole Surfers are playing in Manchester on Saturday night. The Buttholes! Manchester! Saturday night! What the fuck? As far as I can make out, the band (the same line-up I interviewed in 1987) are only able to do this European tour because of financial [...] ...

The experimental music community, for the win: JG Thirlwell, aka Foetus , has curated the entire month of September at improv/jazz innovator John Zorn's NYC club, the Stone . The calendar is so stuffed with awesome artists that Carla Bozulich and Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes have already played, and yet the lineup's power has barely been dented. Among those still to come at the Stone in September are Thurston Moore (with his Northampton Wools duo), Mercury Rev, Andrew WK (performing "piano improvisations"), Matmos, John Zorn himself, Michael Gira of Swans/Angels of Light, Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase, Tony Conrad, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Skeleton Key's Erik Sanko performing with Doveman's Thomas Bartlett, Aa, Thirlwell's own Manorexia ensemble, Zs, Bridget St. John, David Grubbs, Petra Haden and Yuka Honda, and USAisamonster. A full list of the Stone's events this month is after the jump. read more ...
