Mrs. Wiggins and Mrs. Meiller, two kindergarten teachers at Byrd Elementary, start off their year with the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly. As the school year begins at Byrd Elementary School, so does the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. One group of kindergarten students observe these caterpillars in the larva stage for about two weeks, watching as these caterpillars grow from one fourth of an inch to about two inches. During the months of September and October, the Monarch Butterflies are migrating south from Canada. These beautiful Butterflies stop along the way to sometimes mate, lay eggs, and eat wherever there is the milkweed plant. Virginia is on the migration path of the Monarch butterfly, as Goochland has plenty of milkweed. The female butterfly will only lay eggs on milkweed because that is all the baby caterpillars will eat. Milkweed tastes bad to other insects and animals, so the ingested milkweed eventually protects the adult butterfly. When the caterpillars have eaten all the milkweed (the host plant for the Monarch), they can consume, they are placed in a butterfly net. They then climb to the top. This is when the metamorphosis of this beautiful insect is about to begin. When a caterpillar forms a “J”, the children say with excitement, “Mrs. Meiller, Mrs. Wiggins! We all know fall is here as the leaves start to change colors and the nights get a little cooler. One fact that you may not know is that early fall is that it is prime butterfly season. Kim Smith, a Gloucester artist and interior and garden designer, held a program recently at the Arnold Arboretum on Butterflies in the area. The program, “On the Wing: Migratory Butterflies,” highlighted Butterflies that can be seen in the area and how to attract them. Butterflies are seen passing through the area in early fall on their migration from Canada to the warmer weather of Mexico for the winter. Distinguishable by its orange black and white pattern, Smith said the monarch is one of the most visible Butterflies in the Boston area. This time of year, the monarch Butterflies migrate 3,000 miles from Canada to the warmer volcanic areas of Mexico, passing through the northeast United States on their way. In early spring, they travel back upwards, passing through the northeast again. “Most people love monarchs because they stick around,” Smith explained. “They are far from skittish, unlike other Butterflies that don’t stay in the same place for long, and will go as far to land on your shoulder.” Also highly visible during this fall butterfly season, according to Smith, are the red admiral and painted lady Butterflies.
