Standing on the field several minutes after a game billed as "Battle Of The Champions" pitting No. 1-ranked and NJCAA co-national champion Butler against No. 2 Blinn, Grizzlies coach Troy Morrell was still going over the plays in his head. There will be plenty of late nights for Morrell this weekend thinking about the chances Butler left on the table in a 23-20 loss to Blinn at Cessna Stadium on a breezy Thursday night. Butler was quickly put in check by a roaming Blinn defense that turned the Grizzlies' once-thought balanced attack into a one-dimensional pass-happy offense. "It's a big-time character check is what it is," Morrell said. "I feel like we got the right kids on our team that can bounce back. It's just a matter of dealing with some adversity and hanging together. There are a lot more days out there for us to get it...." Blinn turned the ball over five times -- three coming in the second half -- and committed 13 penalties for 125 yards, opening the door countless times for Butler. ...

Members of the El Dorado City Commission, Butler Trustees and USD 490 received an update on the stadium project Wednesday evening. Architects talked about the case studies and research they had done on other college and high school stadiums before moving into the three possible sites they are looking at for El Dorado's stadium. "We looked at three local sites, taking some of what we had learned from the case studies, to develop kind of a generic study," said Vince Haines, with PKHLS, the firm working on the project. "We looked at a study that holds 4,000 people, with 3,000 on the home side and 1,000 on the visitors side." It also included an eight-lane track, as well as a field that could hold a soccer field within it if that was the direction they decided to go. The first site was the current Blackmore Stadium site. "The conceptual layout at this point uses the existing stadium location," Haines said. "We did look at what it would take to place a new stadium up to the north and abandon this." But he said one of the reasons for staying at that site was sentimental. There were some issues they looked at with the current stadium. "The existing stadium is not centered on the field," he said. "This centers it on the field and has an eight-lane track." But it encroaches on the residential lots to the east. Parking for this site would be located to the east and west and include about 950 spots, which is fewer than the zoning requiremen ...

Coffeyville head coach Darian Dulin was by far the sweetest dresser, attired in a necktie and sport coat, at the Jayhawk Community College Coaches pre-season meeting in late July. Dodge City head coach Bob Majeski may not have been dressed as sharply, but both he and Dulin did well in oral deliveries to their fellow coaches at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita. Now if Dulin and Majeski - the only first-year head coaches in the eight-team JCCC - can get their players to perform as crisply when the season kicks off this weekend. Butler hosts Blinn, Texas at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday in what is being billed as the Battle of The Champions. Butler is ranked #1 in the NJCAA pre-season poll after sharing the NJCAA championship last year. Blinn is rated #2 and was the NJCAA champ in 2006. The seven other Kansas teams open their seasons on Saturday. To be sure, Dulin and Majeski will have their hands full in providing a fresh look to programs which have fallen into sluggish stages. Dulin replaces Jeff Leiker, whose team fell to 5-5 last season - his lowest win total in a seven-season run. Leiker is now the school’s athletic director. Majeski replaces Marcus Garstecki, who exited after a 12-18 three-year run. “I know one thing,” said Dulin, “you definitely wear more hats as the head coach. Everything comes back on you.” While Coffeyville has a history of producing standout running backs over the years - that ...
