Liberal New York Times reporter turned liberal nytimes.com blogger, Timothy Egan, posted " Capture the Flag " on Thursday, on how heartening it was to see American flags pop up in liberal domains. The post was ostensibly a plea for people of all political views to have faith in the future good of America. But Egan excused liberals for their lack of public patriotism during the Bush years, citing "years of sanctioned torture and war built on deceit." Traveling in California and New York over the last couple of weeks, I noticed something in the summer landscape of these two deeply blue states that is more reminiscent of rural America this time of year -- a surfeit of American flags. Among the offerings of street vendors in Harlem and outdoor stalls near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the flag is often fused with the image of President Obama, a burst of color against a bleak wall, sometimes with a Superman motif. In California, I saw Old Glory on bicycles in the Bay Area, on backpacks in Yosemite and at campgrounds under the redwoods. It's not unusual to see a flag in liberal provinces, of course. But in the Bush years of sanctioned torture and war built on deceit, many Americans withdrew from overt displays of patriotism. Some said they were ashamed of their country. .... I wondered whether urban Americans, overwhelmingly Democratic, had something against the flag, or if they felt the country was no longer theirs. Now you can ask t ...

SCRIPTING AND PRESS COVERAGE: Bush’s “town halls” vs. Obama’s town halls. “Both White Houses are entitled to hold such events, which are inherently and sensibly orchestrated to benefit each executive. Few beliefs are so widely held that they are accepted as fact. But it is an almost universal opinion that America's tax system is unfair and unwieldy. A fringe idea that is gaining mainstream momentum is the Fair Tax. There are many incarnations of tax policy that use this title. Some see a flat tax on income. Others see value-added taxes that tax goods and services in the production chain. But the version that currently is most viable is Missouri's Fair Tax. It passed in the Show Me State's House of Representatives, but failed to even receive a vote in the state senate. It is not an idea that will just die. There is grassroots support among conservatives for radical changes in tax policy. There is even a bill in Congress that proposes a 23 percent tax on all consumption. The consumption tax replaces all corporate, payroll and income taxes. Missouri's model would be similar on the state level. There is a common belief that eliminating the corporate tax would make Missouri a leading in corporate relocation. How many companies would consider the move to avoid the high cost of doing business in other states? Some companies have been forced to move production lines south of the border or overseas because they are at a competitive disadvantage before they ever hire their first employee because of state and federal taxes on corporate activities. Missouri would see a huge influx of manufacturers and Fortune 500 headquarters. But it isn't ...

The New York Times is covering President Obama's health care town hall-style meeting today in Northern Virginia rather credulously. This is the orchestrated political event that will feature a hand-picked audience and pre-screened questions about Obama's health care plan for the nation. In one story, the Times bills it as Obama's effort to "steer health debate out of the capital." A blog post echoes that storyline, simply referring to Obama's "selling his plan to the public." Those two write-ups, and an update on the town meeting , as it starts, all explain that the president will take questions from the audience (and, Facebook and Twitter!) without ever mentioning that the content of both the audience and the questions was governed by the White House. It struck me that I remembered New York Times approaching coverage of President Bush's Social Security town halls somewhat differently, back in 2005 when Bush was similarly seeking to take the "debate out of the capital" and "sell his plan to the public." Indeed, a quick search reveals that in February 2005, according to the Times, Bush was taking "Social Security to 2 'town halls.' That story notes the "orchestrated" nature of the political event: To make his case, Mr. Bush held two town-hall-style meetings with younger and older workers, events that recalled some of the most carefully orchestrated, and successful, moments of his re-election campaign last year. There were teachers, ...

Radio Iowa has the report on a survey in the field in the first 2012 caucus state, asking Republicans voters whether they would support Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Bobby Jindal or Jeb Bush. The absence of Mitt Romney, who came second in the 2008 caucus, is notable. As is the next question: Which one of the following phrases best describes President Obama? One day after the President George Bush Turnpike went to all-electronic toll collection, The Wall Street Journal 's Environmental Capital blog takes note of one of the North Texas Tollway Authority's reasons for ditching the quarter-catchers: "Air Quality and Fuel Efficiency." As in: "Transitioning to all-ETC will eliminate the stopping, starting and idling associated with cash toll lanes. By promoting a continuous flow of traffic at consistent speeds, the NTTA promotes air quality in the region." Ben Casselman wonders if that's true or just good spin. Justin Cozart So does eliminating toll booths really cut down on emissions? The answer appears to be a qualified "yes." A 1998 study in Orlando, Fla., found that installing an electronic toll collection system at the Holland East Toll Plaza there cut carbon monoxide emissions by 7.29% and hydrocarbon emissions by 7.19%. The reduction came even though the number of vehicles passing through the tolls during peak hours increased by 30%. The downside: Nitrogen oxide emissions increased by 33.77%, apparently because cars were able to drive faster with the electronic tolls. (The Orlando road kept some cash lanes, so the impacts -- positive and negative -- would presumably be even greater in a totally cash-less system such as Dallas'.) ...
