A Wausau Police officer shot and killed a raccoon Monday that a Wausau Man had trapped, shot and burned alive. Brian A. Merriam, 25, was arrested after admitting to trying to kill the animal, according to a criminal complaint. Merriam was charged Tuesday with a felony offense of mistreatment of animals. The offense is punishable by up to a $10,000 fine and three years and six months in prison. Police were called to 209 Schwebach St. for a report of an animal being abused. The officers found a raccoon on its side with its fur burned. (I) could only recognize it as a raccoon because of its distinctive tail, an officer wrote in a report. The raccoon raised its head, groaned and bared its teeth briefly before setting its head back down, police said. The officers shot the raccoon to end its suffering, the report said. Merriam said he attempted to kill the animal with a BB gun, but it did not work, the criminal complaint said. He refused to tell police how he burned it. Merriam admitted it was a stupid idea, but also said he wasnt crazy, police said. Merriam had a preliminary blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit for driving, at the time of his arrest, according to the report. ... While up at Burning Man this year, I passed by Current TV’s “ TV Free Burning Man ” booth. The booth’s tagline: “Participant Powered Media.” So I got a friend to stand in front of the “Powered” part. The geo hackers were out at Burning Man in full force this year. Above is a screen capture from a GigaPan taken by Rich Gibson . The view I've chosen is centered on the Man's heart, but he captured the entire structure from a crane and you can zoom in much further than I've shown here ( launch the full-screen viewer ). Rich took 45 Gigapans while he was on the playa. In case you are not familiar with them, GigaPan is a project sponsored by NASA/Ames, Google and Carnegie Mellon. It provides the ability for thousands of photos to be stitched together to provide an immersive view of an area. The project consists of a robotic camera mount, a photo uploader and a photo stitcher. The site has a lot of amazing imagery including Boston's Charles River and SF's Twin Peaks . If this is interesting to you they've opened the Beta. The image to the right was taken by Mikel Maron (the champion of GeoRSS and a speaker at the Web 2.0 Expo NYC ). Using a kite aerial photography kit he got a shot of the Man from above . There will be more imagery coming. There will be aerial imagery from the crew behind Pict'Earth . There will also be immersive Streetside View imagery taken via modified tricycles. In the meantime I suggest that you watch the geotagged photos trickle in on Flickr on their OSM Burning Man Map ( Radar post ). ...
