Calopteryx notes a New Scientist article on the discovery of "supercritical" water emerging from a vent in the Atlantic Ocean at 407 deg. C (765 deg. F). One of its discoverers actually said, "It's water, but not as we know it"; it's the hottest water ever found on Earth. The cause seems to be a huge bubble of magma beneath the ocean floor, 3 km below the sea surface. Meanwhile Nymz shares a journal entry on a hot spot on land: a 2-acre patch in Ventura county, in California, that has heated up to 433 deg. C (812 deg. F). Here geologists blame buried hydrocarbons Burning as they get access to air through cracks in the ground. That high temperature was measured a foot below the ground surface. If there is a place where heaven and hell meet, it's here. Twenty years ago this summer, a series of wildfires burned 36 percent of America's first national park, scorching huge swaths of pristine forest and killing scores of wild animals. Today, there is new life at Yellowstone National Park, as trees have taken root among the burnt logs that still litter the Earth. The 1988 wildfires were not the ecological disaster many feared at the time. Far from destroying the park, the fires brought new life, cleared out the forest canopies and allowed new plants to bloom. The fires also, however, forced federal officials to tighten a policy allowing some fires to burn and develop new strategies to battle the "mega-fires" of today. "The philosophy was, in these large natural areas, fire should be allowed to play its role," said Dick Bahr, a fire science and ecology specialist for the National Park Service. "What happened in '88 in Yellowstone was probably a passing of the threshold with what the political and social world was comfortable with. It was perceived that we were Burning up their national park and there would be nothing left of it." ...

Not all of Stereogum's favorite sounds conform to what folks expect us to cover. In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Bird Tree , Hair Police , and Hush Arbors . Despite a bunch of CD-Rs, cassettes, and vinyl-only releases, The Certainty Of Swarms is being marketed as Hair Police's "official" follow up to 2005's Constantly Terrified . Who knows how these things get decided. The Lexington, Kentucky/Ypsilanti, Michigan trio's morphed and imploded since the days of Blow Out Your Blood and Obedience Cuts (which I maybe over-dramatically reviewed as a harbinger of noise's crossover into the mainstream a few years ago) and beyond. Since those earlier times, frontman and Gods Of Tundra head Mike Connelly's replaced Aaron Dilloway in Wolf Eyes. His cohorts Trevor Tremaine and Robert Betty have collaborated more with Burning Stare Core . Everyone's solo projects (Failing Lights, Three-Legged Race, etc.) have continued. All that, and the band's more abstract, industrial, and blackened than when they reminded me of Jack Black fronting Harry Pussy (in a good way) at the debut No Fun Festival. They've kept getting better and better, which is why "Mangled Earth" lives up to its name. [ Photo of Hair Police at No Fun '08 by Seth Tisue via Flickr ] ...

clipped by: pokkets clipper's remarks: While arsenic may be toxic because of the way it substitutes phosphorous in the process of Burning energy, I don't recall boiling water being too healthy either. When life on Earth was just kicking off, there was little free oxygen, and plenty of boiling water. Arsenic based photosynthesis is likely to have been working long before the green/chlorophyll based photosynthesis evolved. Clip Source: www.abc.net.au Michael Reilly Scientists have found a new microbe that lives in hot springs and uses arsenic, a substance that is toxic to most life forms, instead of oxygen for photosynthesis. The new organisms, found floating in Mono Lake in California, are reported in today's issue of the journal Science . Since the 1990s, scientists have discovered about 20 species of bizarre bacteria that "breathe" arsenic. "Just like you and I inhale oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, these bugs breathe in Arsenic (III) and breathe out Arsenic (V)," says researcher Ronald Oremland of the United States Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California. Arsenic (III) is the most poisonous form of the element, because it acts much like phosphorous. Arsenic can substitute for phosphorous and upset the ATP molecule starving cells to death billions of years ago, when the first life was just getting started arsenic may have been an important nutrient Photosynthesis may be the most important biochemical machine on the planet. ...

clipped by: papananook Clip Source: www.venturacountystar.com One theory behind the latest hot spot is that oil, gas or some other hydrocarbon deep in the soil caught fire and is Burning. It's being called a natural anomaly, a geological whodunit, a scientific puzzler. And it's the second time that scientists have been scratching their heads over the fact the Earth under Ventura County is Burning. High atop a steep grass-covered mountain overlooking the Little Sespe Canyon near Fillmore, the Earth is on fire. Wisps of smoke rise from a brown patch of grass that looks like it was toasted under an oven's broiler. Deep down, under the dirt, rocks and grass, something is smoldering and Burning, sending smoke through cracks in the parched soil. Such fires aren't uncommon in areas where there is a high concentration of gas or oil underground, he said. King stuck a thermometer 14 inches into the ground and got a reading of 550 degrees. One time, the ground was so hot, the glue holding the sole of his boots melted. Grass can burn at 300 degrees. ...

An unexplained "thermal anomaly" caused a patch of land in Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles, to reach a temperature of over 800 degrees on Friday, baffling experts who have been monitoring the area for weeks. The anomaly was discovered after the land got so hot that it started a brush fire and burned three acres last month. Firefighters were brought to the scene after reports of a blaze, but by the time they arrived only smoldering dirt and brush remained. Firefighters took no chances with the smoking ground, clearing brush near the fumes and cutting a fire line around the area to prevent a blaze from igniting. "We are a little perplexed at this point, to tell you the truth," the Ventura County Star quoted geologist David Panaro as saying. "This is not your usual geological detective story." The area has recorded high temperatures at least five times since 1987, Allen King, a retired geologist with the U.S. Forest Service told the newspaper. The hot spot is located in steep, rugged terrain a few miles north of the town of Fillmore on land owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and leased by Seneca Resources Corp. Officials who are familiar with the patch of land, which is near the large Sespe Oil Field, have come up with a few theories as to why the ground soared to 812 degrees fahrenheit on August 1. One theory is that natural hydrocarbons, such as oil or gas, are Burning deep in the Earth and seeping out through cracks i ...

I read something interesting yesterday that got me thinking about technology and its effect on the environment, again. I saw a post over at Gizmodo about bio-degradable flash drives and how they are a positive step toward reducing e-waste. And while this is certainly a step in the right direction, isn’t it a bit misleading? I’m talking about language, here. Many people hear the word “bio-degradable” and think that means it refers to objects that will decompose and go back into the Earth over time. And while this partially true, it leaves out one important factor: the objects must be heated to very high temperatures in order to break down the materials. And though the materials will break down, it begs the question, is it worth it? The bio-degradable plastic that’s used in these flash drives is corn-based, sure. But Burning it to make it bio-degrade will still cause pollution. Plus, many people still don’t take advantage of the e-waste pick-ups and drop-off centers. With waste like this going into the landfills, it won’t bio-degrade and will, instead, sit in the landfill with all the rest of the trash! While I think bio-degradable technology is a good idea, it’s not the be all or end all solution. An individual responsibility is still required and if consumers don’t hold up their end of the bargain (depositing e-waste at e-waste facilities, only) it won’t matter if the product is bio-degradable or not. The problem isn’t with the te ...

If there's anything better than a ninja fighting zombies, it's a ninja with alien-tech-enhanced powers nuking space zombies infected by a plague of collective murderous consciousness. And I haven't even gotten to the part about floating cities on a Venus-like planet covered in sulfur-specked clouds. That's the beauty of Tobias Buckell 's latest novel, Sly Mongoose , out this month from Tor Books. Just when you think the action can't get more insane, it does. Even better: Just when you think you're reading a pure military SF adventure, Buckell gives you a wide-angle shot of the larger political context where the alien smackdown is blowing up, and takes your breath away. The third novel in Buckell's series about a group of space-going humans descended from Earth's Caribbean cultures, Sly Mongoose is set in the wake of a human rebellion against alien colonizers. These aliens believed it was their “burden” to help humans shed their “savage ways” via enslavement and mind-control, and have finally been beaten back by a group of elite human fighters called the Mongoose Men (though many are women). But now a new alien threat haunts the human planets. A mysterious plague has hit cargo ship on its way to Chilo, a planet where over a dozen cities float in the upper levels of a dense, high-pressure atmosphere of poisonous clouds and Burning surface temperatures. The plague, spread via biting, turns humans into zombie-like creatures who commu ...

Nothing like the smoking ruins left behind after a rocket smashes to Earth on a fast, steep reentry course. I love this set of images showing the results of the Russian Soyuz rocket's return to Earth in April of this year. Recently uncovered by Dark Roasted Blend, the images show the rocket's Burning tear through a field of grain, and then close in on the blackened husk of the reentry cone itself. Imagine riding in that sucker down to Earth at like a zillion miles per hour. There's something so poignant about this rocket's blistered skin. It's like this machine loved its human companions so much that it came back down to Earth just for them, even though it died in the process. Soyuz Reentry Pictures [via Dark Roasted Blend ] ...

Hello from the NASDAQ market site where I’m back on the two-a-day train for Fast Money during the Olympics. After a refreshing three-day weekend “that smell” you’re grimacing at is more likely to be the financials going up in smoke (again) as opposed to me Burning out. Here’s what I’m watching while I still have a shine on my shoes and a melody in my heart:  Is everyone on Earth watching Goldman Sachs (GS) toy with the $160 level? I’ve gotten an earful of it today and truthfully I think $160 has roughly zero chance of holding a sustained attack. ... ...

Okay, so this is something I've noticed in Halo quite a bit. In the opening FMV for Halo 3, Spartan 117, "John" was shown jumping from the Forerunner Keyship at extremely high altitudes down to planet Earth, Burning up and living through it with little more than a locked gel layer and a few moments of unconsciousness to show for it. Now we get to the rest of the campaign and gameplay. I remember several instances in the gameplay, where blissfully unaware I would jump off a cliff (okay, so I did it intentionally out of boredom), only to find several seconds later the game accusing me of falling to death. Am I the only one who notices the inconsistencies here? John-117, who fell from the upper layers of the atmosphere at supersonic speeds and survived a collision with the Earth can fall to death from a few hundred to a few thousand feet? I somehow am not believing this notion, especially considering the fall he survived at the beginning of the game. A friend of mine pointed out in discussion that most of the time, he dies because he lands in water, as though his suit can't stand that kind of environment. Mind you, the Mjolnir Mark VI armor was called an environment suit by Guilty Spark, and this was demonstrated in the sequence in Halo 2 where you're running around on the outside of the Earth Defense Platform. If it can enable Master Chief to survive and breathe in space, then it certainly can help him continue to live underwater. His su ...

After two years of construction, Robert Lord Builders finally can showcase its 15,000-square-foot “green home” in St. Charles. “We’ve landed on Mars, and we’ve just begun,” said firm owner Robert Lord as he stood Saturday on the backyard deck of the lavish three-story home. The mammoth structure is heated and cooled without the aid of a gas-Burning furnace or air conditioner. Instead, Lord Builders used an underground geothermal cooling and heating system to circulate air. Heat pumps planted underground move air to utilize the Earth’s 55-degree temperature and use water and environmentally friendly antifreeze. Lord said the system can save a homeowner up to 75 percent in air conditioning and heating costs.  Other features of the home include cell-foam insulation, an air-tight polyurethane foam that lines the home’s interior wall structure. Lord said it reduces energy costs and air waste more efficiently than standard fiberglass. The home also has a hybrid septic system, a hybrid water well and carpeting made from recycled materials. The bathrooms use hybrid-electric toilets. “Our intention was 100 percent commitment to efficiency, environment,” Lord said. “We’ve fine-tuned everything.” Located in the River Oaks subdivision in St. Charles Township, the home’s features include a sun room, veranda, gourmet-style kitchen, four-car garage and giant kitchen on the first floor. There are three bedrooms upstairs, along with a gallery, mo ...

The most trusted name in news, or as the freepers like to call it the Communist News Network, has finally asked the Burning question we've all been to scared out of our wits to bring up in polite conversation: Is Obama the Anti-Christ? No really, they did on the air: That such a subject is even speculated about in any but the most backwards, unreconstructed segments of American society -- let alone on a 24-hour cable network -- is a testament (no pun intended) to the depths to which political debate has fallen. But there was the caption on CNN Friday in big bold letters: "OBAMA THE ANTICHRIST?" Apparently a not-insignificant number of Americans, after viewing John McCain's Web ad The One, with its Messianic overtones -- come away thinking that Barack Obama has been sent from Hell to Earth to turn its citizens against God. For inspiration, some of these people seem to be drawing from the fictional Left Behind series, which posits a dystopian future where the Anti-Christ comes to Earth as a charismatic politician. Yeah, liberal media my ass. McCain puts up an ad with the express purpose of raising this question sotto voce so all the fundamentalist Christians won't stay home this November but will come out to vote for our Johnny Mac, and what does CNN do? They make his point for him in the most obvious fashion by devoting actual air time to a discussion of this tripe. Then again they are the network of Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck, so I supp ...
