Austin police are looking for suspects in six smash-and-grab Burglaries that happened early in the morning this week in the Second Street-area downtown. The burglars took cash registers from small businesses, said Austin Police Department Detective David Espinoza. Detectives believe the same people are involved because of similarities in the Burglaries, but investigators don’t know how many suspects there are, Espinoza said. The Burglaries happened at businesses at 830 W. Third St., 200 E. Cesar Chavez St., 215 Lavaca St., 408 W. Second St., 250 W. Second St. and 117 Lavaca St., police said. They are part of a spree of smash-and-grab Burglaries citywide, Espinoza said. There were four smash-and-grab Burglaries all over Austin in August, but Espinoza said he doesn’t know if the August Burglaries are related to this week’s incidents. A rash of Burglaries south of Chatham has some area residents thinking that a neighborhood watch might be a good idea. “I’m all for it,” said Randy Jackson, a resident of Cascade Road who was targeted by burglars in July. “I want to get some signs or anything else up that might deter a future burglary attempt.” Jackson was one of about 75 people who attended a community meeting Thursday to talk about the Burglaries. According to information from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, seven Burglaries were reported during the past few months in the Ball, Cotton Hill and Pawnee township areas, which area south and southeast of Chatham. There was at least one other burglary in the area in August. Sheriff Neil Williamson was at the meeting and said that in most cases the burglars took televisions, jewelry or weapons. However, he said, the Burglaries abruptly stopped a few weeks ago. Deputies arrested a man a few weeks ago for a burglary elsewhere in the county, and they suspect he could have been involved in the Burglaries near Chatham. The arrested man’s name was not available Thursday. During the meeting, Williamson gave the crowd some facts about Burglaries. Burglaries mostly happen during the day when no one is at home.
