Platform: ( XBLM ) Rocky & Bullwinkle takes the world of the 1959-1964 cartoon and clumsily crams it into a second-rate WarioWare knockoff. It's not a bad idea, as the large cast of characters and multiple themes bring a number of different frantic and fractured microgames to mind. Well, my mind, anyway. But this Xbox Live Arcade release doesn't capture enough of the look, sound, and feel of the cartoon, making the whole project come off like an unofficial Flash game with shaky control. Not even Bullwinkle can stay awake through this one. There are over 100 microgames, and each one is assigned to a different "show," much the same way different games were assigned to different characters in WarioWare. Here, the shows are based on one character or sub-show from the cartoon, giving you a Bullwinkle set, one for Rocky, one for Boris & Natasha, one for Aesop & Son, and so on. Your first goal is to clear all seven of the main shows. A show gives you a randomly selected batch of games from each set, as well as one boss game. You can fail the main games, lose a life, and continue forward, but you'll have to clear the boss game each time it comes up to proceed. Clearing it gives you an extra life and raises the difficulty up a level, making all of the games a bit more difficult. There are five levels of difficulty in all. Most of the games are too simple, like a dart-throwing game where all you do is point crosshairs at a dartboard--you don't ...

I saw a post on Kotaku earlier this week and saw that there would be a full Rocky & Bullwinkle game for XBLA coming later in the week, and I got EXCITED. Unreasonably excited. I already got the Rocky & Bullwinkle pinball table for Pinball FX on XBLA last week without even thinking; [...] ...

This is a family blog…* …But parody just can’t keep up with reality. (h/t Talking Points Memo). What gravels me (as long as we are making fun of senators) is, of course, the banal stupidity of the statement in question as well as the howlingly inappropriate inference one is forced to draw. Again — just a little bit [...] ...

Boris is my kind of tropical storm. Other than having a cool name, which conjures up memories of Boris Karloff (the great actor who played roles such as Frankenstein in the 1930s) Boris is way the heck out in the Pacific Ocean, aiming even further out to sea, unlikely to do much more than whip up some waves and scare some fish . I wish all of the tropical systems in the Atlantic would be as well behaved. But we all know better than that, don’t we ? The good news on this Monday morning is the tropical Atlantic remains nice and calm . Which is normal for this time of year. On average, the first tropical storm doesn’t emerge until July 10 . Although we’ve already seen Tropical Storm Arthur , that was an aberration; it formed on May 31, a day before the official start of the season – and then amounted to nothing . Now, in light of Boris, you might think the “N” storm in the Pacific this year would be named Natasha in honor of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show . But no ... it's Norbert (Nana in the Atlantic). ...

My dogs love these homemade dog treats... After that dog food scare awhile back where some dogs were sickened or even died, Hubby & I made a decision that our dogs would no longer be fed commercial dog food, including their beloved dog biscuit treats.  This way, we’d know exactly what went into the food, and we’d also be able to easily steer clear of cornmeal, which is hard to avoid and seems to aggravate our dog’s allergies. First stop: the Internet.  We looked at several sites that had dog treat recipes, and we gravitated towards these two: Bullwinkle Free Dog Treat Recipes -- which has numerous free, printable recipes.  The Poop Pantry -- they have dog recipes and treats you can cook for your dog. We began with the Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers (very easy, only 4 ingredients) and Bacon Bits for Dogs (I never met a dog that didn’t like bacon) and Canine Carrot Cookies (my dogs adore carrots). Then we set out to create our own homemade dog treats. We call our recipe: Peanut Butter Puppers . ...

In 1970, Gil Scott-Heron, a poet and singer with a strong distaste for political apathy, released the song “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” It was something of a brass-knuckled, knock-out punch against anyone who didn’t fight the powers-that-be, with Scott-Heron delivering his lyrics with just the right amount of sarcastic outrage. The revolution will not be brought to you by the Schaefer Award Theatre and will not star Natalie Woods and Steve McQueen or Bullwinkle and Julia. The revolution will not give your mouth sex appeal. The revolution will not get rid of the nubs. The revolution will not make you look five pounds thinner, because the revolution will not be televised, Brother. Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell will be one of the films showcased at this year's Outfest in Los Angeles. I first heard the song on KCRW several years ago, as I recall, around the same time I came out. I often think about it whenever I write something about the gay rights movement because it makes a certain amount of pragmatic sense--people need to get involved, hit the streets, and work for equality. But, over the years, I've realized Scott-Heron's battle cry doesn't fully apply to the gay struggle. ...

Record: 46-47. Pace: 80-82. Change on last season: -3 More extra innings, more forfeited leads, more bullpen pitchers failing to get the job done. This time, however, there was no final surge to come up with a victory. If anything, we're left with tired psyches, tired arms in the pen, and a losing record once again. Doug Davis' outing was decent, certainly decent enough to win, and once again registered as a quality start (and a no decision). Through four innings he had given up just a walk and two hits - one a solo shot to Ryan Howard that extended his hitting streak to 14 games -and his pitch count was reasonably low. Still, he created trouble for himself in both the fifth and sixth innings by being unable to retire the final hitter. In the fifth, Davis got two relatively quick outs, but required another 15 pitches to eventually escape with a Chase Utley popup. But in the sixth, after the Diamondbacks had tied the game at 1, Bullwinkle pulled a landmine out of the hat instead. After a couple more baserunners reached with two down, Philadelphia tallied two runs without the ball being put in play, one on a wild pitch, the other on a caught stealing where Ruiz kept himself in a rundown just long enough for Victorino to score from third. Suddenly the visitors found themselves in a bigger deficit than they had the inning before. Like the previous game, though, Arizona came storming back. A Montero single, Romero double and Bonifacio ...

You’re going to need some really, really big Tupperware. Idaho Fish and Game has announced that moose leftovers are available. There is an application process, which begs the question: will the moose will be past its sell-by date by the time the winners are announced? Oh. A second reading of the press release reveals that it is leftover moose controlled-hunt permits, 26 of them, which are available. What a relief. Wrapping Bullwinkle parts into tinfoil packages just doesn’t appeal. I’m going to pass on this project, since I’ve met too many personal moose to have the heart, even thought they do stink something awful. Here are the particulars: ...

State Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz was just talking about the race for attorney general between incumbent Republican Rob McKenna and Democratic challenger John Landenburg, the Pierce County executive. He said McKenna was best remembered for "his role as Sherman from Rocky and Bullwinkle." Pelz also had amoment of silence for former state party chairwoman Karen Marchioro who for the first time in 40 years was not attending a state convention. She died last year. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is the chairman of the convention. Gov. Chris Gregoire is about to speak. Her campaign organized an orchestrated demonstration to show excitement about her appearance. Staff handed out signs to volunteers who were strategically placed around the hall and told to give the signs to people on the convention floor. But apparently the spontaneous show of excitement didn’t come exactly as planned. “They’re supposed to be walking right behind her,” said one Gregoire staffer. “What just happened there?” asked another. I’m not sure who this show is designed for. It’s not the press, because the organized volunteers were lined up to block our view of the stage and the video that played on big screens. I suppose, though, it is meant to excite Democrats here, to rev up the base. Gregoire is now attacking Dino Rossi for the budget he helped write when he was chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Left unsaid, as always, is that the budget was ...

For the tour directors of the Missoula Children's Theatre, there is no such thing as a line spoken too loudly, an action taken too broadly or a dance move made too enthusiastically. The message for the young people starring in this Saturday's theatrical version of "Robin Hood" is to give it everything they've got while they are on stage. The Missoula Children's Theatre version of "Robin Hood" -- which is being produced locally in conjunction with the Grand Island Little Theatre -- is not a straight retelling of the story of "Robin and his Band of Merry Men." Rather, it is a musical comedy, which derives much of its humor by twisting -- very gently -- the familiar story of Robin Hood, Maid Marian and other well-known characters into some very odd situations. For those of a certain age, this retelling of "Robin Hood" will remind them of what "Fractured Fairy Tales" from the old "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" did to stories such as "Goldilocks," "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty." For those who are younger, the Missoula Children's Theatre's version of Robin is similar to what "Shrek" did to such familiar fairy-tale characters as Snow White, the Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio. To be sure, Robin is a good-hearted man, but he needs a little guidance that the most profitable course of action is to steal from the rich because, after all, those are the folks who have money. He also needs a little prompting to figure out that the best use of th ...

D id anybody else hear about the Astros' 9-0 loss today to the Cubs?  Normally I'd either be at the game, watching the game, or checking the scores on my computer after the Scrubs marathon was over.  But this time I really didn't care.  Nobody does anymore.  And you and I both know what that means (new suits!).  It's time to introduce the 'r' word to Houston: Rebuild.  While we have flirted with the idea in recent years only to kid ourselves with amazing second halves, it's time we actually put the practice into practice.  Even if we do come close to making the playoffs this year, we should still put up shop and rebuild. It's not uncommon around baseball franchises.  Hell, Billy Beane's resume consists of nothing but rebuilding.  The only difference in our situation is that winning will no longer become an immediate issue.  Beane has been able to win games with guys who have as much talent as Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.  But he's also a statistical genius, as opposed to Bullwinkle, our cuddly, overly-optimistic general manager also known as Ed Wade. Wade went the opposite direction during the off-season and decided to try to win now.  He proved his point by trading Troy Patton, the Charizard of our minor-league pitching collection, and many other young prospects such as Dennis Sarfate, Luke Scott, and Matt "I'll Pay For Dinner" Albers in exchange for the services of the 31 year old 33 year old Miguel Tejada.  While Sarfate and Albe ...
