Congress is currently debating the Bush administration's proposal for a $700 billion to $1 trillion bailout of Wall Street. It is a bad bill and would waste an enormous amount of money, but it represents just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of fiscal irresponsibility in Washington. Indeed, the national debt already exceeds $9.5 trillion, and Congress recently raised the debt ceiling to $10.6 trillion (which the Bush administration is proposing to increase in the bailout to $11.3 trillion). Congress should reject the bailout, and then get busy cutting spending elsewhere throughout the Budget. For instance, the 2009 federal Budget will exceed $3 trillion. Next year's deficit will run a half trillion dollars. Additionally, this assumes no more federal bailouts. We need a president willing to reconsider every spending program and challenge every special interest that comes in the door. The U.S. already has spent about $600 billion on the war in Iraq. That's almost as much as the Wall Street bailout package. But total costs for the war may exceed $2 trillion. There are many reasons to pull our forces out of Iraq, leaving Iraq for the Iraqis. Ending this enormous waste of taxpayer money is one of the most important reasons. The defense Budget next year will be at least $515 billion. Toss in outlays for Afghanistan and Iraq, and the total will run nearly $700 billion. Yet most of this money, the equivalent of the Wall Street bailout, ...

Detroit Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. appears focused, dutiful -- and remarkably positive, considering all the trouble that's in front of him. That's a good thing, as is his grasp of issues, his developing plans to resolve them, and his even-keel style, quite a contrast to the superlatives-laden Kwame Kilpatrick. ... If it hasn't, there's little doubt that it will soon. The Budget was intended to push the mess into next year and onto the next Legislature. In that sense, it only may succeed because the election is coming up fast. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger meets Wednesday with the party leaders from the state Senate and Assembly. The Big Five didn't make much progress on the Budget this summer, and there are plenty of lawmakers angry that their bills were vetoed. Schwarzenegger set a record by vetoing about 35 percent of the legislation passed this year, in many cases saying the late Budget didn't give him time to review bills in detail. The next food fight may start sooner than we think. We will editorialize on the Budget in Wednesday's paper. When Governor Patrick announced last week that he would invoke his executive 9C powers to cut state spending, he cited the “significant stress” placed on the U.S. economy and its financial markets, which he warned “has now spread to the state Budget.” Listening to the governor, one might think the state’s current fiscal Crisis was brought about by the recent stock market turmoil. In reality, what’s happening on Wall Street has merely exacerbated an already precarious financial situation in Massachusetts and magnified the need for Budget cuts that should have been made months ago. The Commonwealth’s financial woes can be traced directly to the $28.22 billion Budget passed in July, a Budget I voted against because it was clearly unsustainable. The final conference committee Budget had a bottom line that exceeded what the House, the Senate and even the governor had recommended. With revenues projected to grow by 3.8 percent – at a time when most other states and the federal government were using a 1 percent growth figure – the Budget actually increased by 5.2 percent, or $1.5 billion, as funding in more than 140 accounts rose more than 9 percent and some agencies saw spending increases of double and even triple digits. When fiscal restraint was called for, the Legislature failed to tighten its belt. The Budget relied on overly optimistic revenue projections and excessive borrowing, including $400 million drawn from reserves, and was ... Source: www.blogher.com --- 2 days ago
Lately, I've taken out a sheet of paper to list objects, circumstances, and people for which I'm grateful, not necessarily in that order. I have to do that because sometimes my moments as a single mother of two (one teen and one adult who still lives at home), a caregiver to elderly parents who live with me, and as a person who expects more of herself and life, I get edgy and properly pissed. So, when I read a post like "Frustration Nation " at Oh, And Another Thing, I don't judge, I empathize. Here are a few lines of her frustration with this economy. I'm really just bummed out today. I'm better off than so many people, but right now, i just feel defeated. I want Claire to grow up in a house with a yard, and I'm giving her a box apartment with no grass and loud, obnoxious neighbors. I want Claire to be in the best daycare, so I put her there and can't afford it from week to week. I want to give my mom and dad gifts and money so they can enjoy life for once, yet I bleed them dry because I can't manage my own expenses. I park between a Lexus SUV and a Mercedes C-class at daycare, and my own humble Honda is still not paid off---a 6-year car loan to afford a Honda. (Kara at Oh, And Another Thing ) She and I are one of many Americans struggling to make ends meet for our families. I suspect many of my readers could join in these laments. We're hearing that we're facing the worst economic Crisis since The Great Depression, and we're ho ... Find more results for Budget Crisis on RSSMicro.com |
