Good idea, not the best execution. For one, Guy should have headlined. For two, he and Lang should have gotten equal time onstage and Big Head Todd less time. Or the 4-hour event could have started earlier and/or the between-band breaks could have been shorter (no band had elaborate staging). Big Head Todd paid tribute to [...] ...

Most musicians are nocturnal. Not Buddy Guy. "I always get up early. I have always had an alarm clock in my life.'' That’s typical of Guy, who at 72 years old is still happy about singing the blues. Guy’s tour hits the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston on Sunday. He’ll be part of a bill that includes George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers, and The Hot Stove All Stars. The show is the summer incarnation of the Hot Stove Cool Music baseball-themed charity series. (Tickets $27.50 and $41, show starts at 6 p.m.) Guy’s latest album, "Skin Deep,'' is one of his strongest yet. It was produced by Boston musician Tom Hambridge, who has written more than 300 songs, including hits for Grammy-winners Ashley Cleveland and Delbert McClinton, among others. Norwell’s Susan Tedeschi and her husband, Derek Trucks, also sing and play on Guy’s new album. "Too Many Tears'' is a Guy-Tedeschi duet. Guy said he loves his new album, and said the songwriting collaboration with Hambridge was one of the most enjoyable parts. He said this is his first record with "100 percent new material,'' something that makes him proud. "Usually when I want to do a record, they’ll suggest someone with hit records as a producer, but they let me use Tom here,'' said Guy. "This is the first time in my 50 years recording career where I’ve had an album of all new songs, and I admit I was trying to prove ‘em all wrong. We got some great songs, Tommy brought in some great ...

Over the last 50 years, blues stylist Buddy Guy has won more W.C. Handy awards than anyone can count. He has also scooped up a handful of Grammy Awards and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, his critical acclaim and commercial success were not automatic. Guy was 21 when he first settled in Chicago and landed work as a session player on recordings by such notables as Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. read more ...
