Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu says former coach Martha Karolyi should be removed from her role as national team coordinator, and that other athletes - past and present - agree with her. In an interview scheduled to air Tuesday night on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Moceanu criticized Karolyi and her husband Bela for their strict training regimen and diet restrictions. The Karolyis retired after Moceanu and her teammates won the gold medal in 1996, but Martha Karolyi has overseen the U.S. women's team since 2001. "I think there's a better way to do it," Moceanu told HBO. "Bottom line, I've had several coaches after the Karolyis. And I know it can be done in a healthier way physically and emotionally." Moceanu accused the Karolyis in the interview of limiting what she could eat and showing little compassion to her and other girls they trained. She retired in 2000 and a comeback attempt in 2006 ended when USA Gymnastics rejected her petition to compete at the national championships because she wasn't physically ready. But Kim Zmeskal Burdette, who trained with the Karolyis and is now a coach, defended the Karolyis and the current training system, saying she wouldn't be involved if it were unhealthy or unfair. ... And chances are, if you have Time Warner in the Kansas City area, you don't give a you-know-what because Time Warner and NFL Network still don't have an agreement . NFL Network announced that Bob Papa will take over for Gumbel and Bryant Gumbel join analyst Cris Collinsworth . Gumbel, who never seemed suited for the gig, stepped down after last season. Who is Papa? He has been the voice of the New York Football Giants. And NFL Network tells us that he is a "fixture in the New York market," which, of course, is supposed to impress the rest of us Huckleberries. ...
Filed under: NFL Media Watch , NFL Network Neil Best of Newday is reporting that NFL Network has hired Bob Papa to handle play-by-play on its slate of eight regular-season games, replacing Bryant Gumbel as the top in-game broadcaster on the league-operated cable channel. By hiring Papa, NFL Network has basically gone the exact opposite route it went when it hired Gumbel: Papa is an old pro who has a firm understanding of the job but isn't well known outside New York; Gumbel is a big name who had no experience calling play-by-play. Tom Hammond was thought to be the front-runner for the gig but was apparently passed over. NFL Network wanted Al Michaels but couldn't afford him. On NFL Network Papa will work with analyst Cris Collinsworth. Papa's primary job is as the Giants' radio play-by-play man. He is also the lead announcer for HBO's Boxing After Dark .
