Wed Jul 23, 2008 -- Several projects with TFT connections were previewed or celebrated at the world's biggest geekorama pop culture convention, which took root in San Diego July 24-27. Though it wasn't on the official schedule, Variety reports that Walden Media "took advantage of the two hour commute from Los Angeles to San Diego" to launch its campaign for the upcoming live-action sci-fi movie 'City of Ember' , directed by Gil Kenan MFA '02 ("Monster House"), "aboard an old-fashioned train car that introduced passengers to the fall film." Train ride, which featured props and costumes from the movie, served as an unconventional press junket for the captive audience of 23 key entertainment reporters and bloggers. Director Gil Kenan climbed aboard to unveil extended footage of the film, which is based on the Jeanne DuPrau fantasy novel of the same name. "The goal with something like this (event) is to create special awareness for the film. It needs to be nurtured," said Kenan, who admitted he was nervous about how his film clips would play amid the jostling of the train. "In an enormous hall with people dressed up like Klingons, (a film like this) can sort of fall on the floor." Variety's Anne Thompson was on the train : ...the train ride was a brilliant promo idea on the part of Fox Walden's Jeffrey Godsick, who commandeered two cars and attached them to a train, showed 23 journalists some footage of "Monster House" director Gil Kenan' ...

Sat Jul 19, 2008 -- The Animation Workshop's Professor Chuck Sheetz '83 directed the "Simpsons" episode "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind," nominated for a 2008 Emmy Award as "Outstanding Animated Program." And he is not alone. Two of Sheetz' mid-80s classmates in the School's Animation Workshop garnered nominations this year in the same category: Tom Yasumi '88 was Animation Director on the "Spongebob Squarepants" episode "Inmates of Summer/Two Faces of Squidward," and Dominic Polcino '86, MFA '91 directed the "Family Guy" episode "Blue Harvest." "The three of us worked together at Mattel during the summer of 1988," Sheetz recalls, "creating animation for a primitive interactive toy, 'The See and Say Videophone.' At the time, we were surprised and thrilled just to have paying jobs in animation." If a TFT alumni reunion is in the works for the 2008 Emmy Awards telecast on Sunday, September 21, it will be deja vu all over again: Three Bruins nominated in major categories have been to this party several times before. A nomination for "Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series" went to Daniel Attias MFA '83 for the "No Cannes Do" episode of HBO's "Entourage." This is Attias' second Emmy nomination for his work on "Entourage." The veteran director has also worked on "The Sopranos," "Deadwood," "The Wire" and "House," and was Honored as "Filmmaker of the Year" at 2008's UCLA Festival of New Creative Work. Alumna Mariska Hargitay recei ...

The Chicago Blackhawks traded center Martin St. Pierre today for center Pascal Pelletier from the Boston Bruins. Pelletier, 25, made his National Hockey League debut last season with the Bruins and was held scoreless in six games. The Labrador City, New Foundland, native spent the majority of last year in the American Hockey League where he led the Providence Bruins with career-highs in goals, 37; assists, 38; and points, 75, in 73 regular-season contests before leading Providence with 12 points in 10 playoff games. A four-year pro, Pelletier appeared in 206 regular-season matchups with Providence over the past three seasons, registering 71 goals, 99 assists and 170 points. He also netted 69 points (28 goals, 41 assists) in 88 career ECHL contests with the Louisiana IceGators (2004-05) and Gwinnett Gladiators (2005-06). Before making his professional debut during the 2004-05 campaign, Pelletier racked up 288 points (112 goals, 176 assists) and 489 penalty minutes in 257 career QMJHL games spanning four seasons with Baie-Comeau and Shawinigan (2000-04). St. Pierre, 24, appeared in 69 matchups with the Rockford IceHogs last season, where he ranked second in the AHL in assists, 67, and points, 88, and led the IceHogs in playoff scoring with 14 points. Training camp is still two months away, but the final pieces are already falling into place for the Bruins. Yesterday, the club locked up its last remaining restricted free agent by signing defenseman Dennis Wideman to a four-year deal to avoid arbitration. Boston then placed veteran right wing Glen Murray on waivers, the first step toward buying out the final year of his contract. Wideman's deal is worth $15.5 million, with annual salaries of $3.25 million, $3.75 million, $4 million and $4.5 million and a cap hit of $3.875 million per season - quite a leap from the one-year, $600,000 deal he signed a year ago. But Wideman's play also took quite a leap under the tutelage of coach Claude Julien. He was second only to captain Zdeno Chara among defensemen and sixth overall on the team with a career-high 13 goals and 36 points in 81 games, more than double the six goals he scored in 75 games split between St. Louis and Boston the previous year. More importantly, he improved his play in his own zone, finishing with 110 blocked shots and a plus-11 that ranked him second on the team. He was a minus-10 the previous year, and minus-31 as a rookie with the Blues in 2005-06. "He's the type of player we targeted to bring in,"said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli, who acquired Wideman for high-scoring forward Brad Boyes at the 2006 trade deadline. "Over the course of this year, he has truly entered into a new level of play. It's one we h ...
