This from Beijing: The Village Voice 's Runnin' Scared blog is reporting via Boing Boing that Chinese authorities have detained a Brooklyn artist, James Powderly, along with five other Americans. The report says that Mr. Powderly was part of a group that used LED lights to spell out "Free Tibet" near the Olympics site. According to Mr. Powderly's bio on the Web site for Robot Clothes, an art and commercial research and development partnership of which he is a member, he is "a maverick hobbyist dabbling at the fringes of robotics, chemistry, writing, pyrotechnics, graffiti and art," and apparently some of his work can be found on the surface of Mars. CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [NY1] — On Tuesday, Brooklyn marked the 17th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots, one of its darkest episodes. The violence was sparked by the death of a seven-year-old black boy, Gavin Cato, who was hit by a car driven by a Hasidic Jew. When it was over, 29-year-old rabbinical student Yankel Rosenbaum was dead.In the years since, the families of the two victims have come together and have become a symbol of the healing of racial tensions in the neighborhood. This year, Rosenbaum family friend Isaac Abraham met with Carmel Cato, Gavins father. “This being the 17th year of two tragic, tragic fatalities, Mrs. Rosenbaum called me from Australia, Yankel's mother, and asked me if she sends a letter, can I deliver it to Mr. Cato,” said Abraham. “Well, it's a sympathy letter, expressing the feelings and the love to me on this day, said Cato. The police have arrested a suspect in the brutal attack and robbery of an 85-year-old woman in a Crown Heights elevator last week. According to the Daily News, Cornelius Abson "confessed and then apologized for choking and robbing Lillian France." But a police source adds, " He's sorry he got caught. He wasn't sorry when he was choking the lady. " It's suspected that Abson followed France from her bank on Eastern Parkway to the apartment building--she had $900 on her. He may also have attacked many other elderly Brooklyn residents , robbing them of money and other items, like a Medicaid card and a bible. Yesterday, City Council member Letitia James and Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes each added $1,000 to the reward money, which now totals $14,000. Hynes said, "If you've seen the video, then you know that this attack was gratuitous. He even grabbed her cane - it was sociopathic conduct." France is still in the hospital. Per the Post, she suffered "internal bruising of her throat, as well as lacerations and bruises on her face." ...
