Vodafone has dropped the price of its entry-level mobile Broadband plan, cutting its 1G a month offering from $34.95 to $24.95. (It advertises the service as $19.95 a month, but you have to pay $5 a month for the USB stick modem .) The plan still requires a 24-month contract, so it's not ideal for super-ideal users, but it doesn't have the trick conditions of most prepaid mobile Broadband plans . Vodafone ...

It's official: the fledging WiMAX Broadband network is finally getting rolling, with companies such as Lenovo, Toshiba and Nokia announcing a number of products (or extensions of previous products) that will take advantage of the competitor to cellular and home data-delivery markets. The formal launch for Xohm, the service that is being offered by a merger of Sprint's WiMAX assets and Craig McCaw's Clearwire, is good news following months of delay. The network will expand throughout Baltimore and into Chicago and Washington, D.C. Other cities, including Dallas-Ft. Worth, Boston and Philadelphia, reportedly are running in test mode and should be accessible for those with a Xohm account and equipment--mainly laptops and data cards. (Oddly, one of the original WiMAX backers, Samsung, is not expected to offer support in its laptops until next year.) Intel and other backers now have a lot of hard work to do to convince consumers to sign up. Sure, Xohm offers extremely competitive pricing when compared to other Broadband service offerings. Users can pay by the day or month and use two different devices under one plan--all without a contract. But coverage at first will be spotty. There also are some reports from early adopters that using early versions of WiMAX while truly on the go has been problematic. In the meantime, AT&T, Verizon and cable companies who have not invested in WiMAX might take the threat to heart and begin dropping Prices ...

Optus' wireless Broadband network is in so much trouble it's halved pre-paid usage limits to drive down usage. Optus and Virgin, who share a network, have both copped a lot of flak recently for their terrible network performance. Optus' HSDPA network was found to be the world's slowest iPhone network, while the telco was also forced to stop selling its Wireless Fusion home Broadband packages because of performance issues. The fact Virgin is still selling its terrible Broadband at Home package is a disgrace. Surely it's time for the ACCC consumer watchdog to step in and ensure telcos can actually deliver the services they're charging for. Optus has made a preemptive strike by cutting its pre-paid wireless Broadband Prices by up to 50 per cent, reports APC , perhaps hoping to ease network congestion. ...

According to our friends at TeleGeography - they were the ones behind this awesome map of internet cables , if you recall - the wholesale price of internet access is dropping sharply. And the drop isn't just in developing markets where capacity is starting to flow and Prices can fall accordingly. No, we're seeing pretty good news at home. "Wholesale Prices around the world have been declining rapidly, due to competition and declining equipment and transport costs. Somewhat surprisingly, Prices in the U.S. and Europe are falling as fast as, or faster than, Prices in many more expensive regional markets." This graph tells the story. But why isn't the cost of my Broadband access coming down accordingly? Lloyds TSB has launched a new website aimed at helping its customers through the credit crisis. Consumers logging on to lloydstsbcompare.com can compare the cost of the UK’s service and utility providers. The site also includes supermarket petrol price tables that can help motorists secure the best deals in and around their local area. Gas, electricity, telephone and Broadband costs are covered together with car and travel insurance premiums. Lloyds TSB spokeswoman, Helen Wylde, says customers are concerned about meeting rising household bills this winter. The bank’s research indicates that 80% of households are already feeling the effects increased costs. According to Internet survey firm, Tickbox.net, 27% of households have seen energy bills rise by £40 a month this year and 30% are resigned to a similar increase during the winter months. Forty per cent of consumers surveyed said they did not know how they would meet the cost of energy bills if Prices continue to increase, or if this winter is particularly cold. The Government recently announced that an additional one million people have been pushed into fuel poverty, taking the total to 5.4 million. To qualify as fuel poor, 10% or more of net income must be spent on energy. ...

According to a report by research firm, TeleGeography , the price of wholesale internet access (IP transit) continues to decline but varies considerably around the world. From today's report: "Median monthly IP transit Prices for 1,000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) ports in major US and European cities ranged from USD10 to USD14 per Mbps in Q2 2008. IP transit Prices in Asia remain far higher than in the US and Europe. Prices for GigE ports in major Asian cities in Q2 2008 ranged from USD30 per Mbps month in Seoul to USD45 per Mbps per month in Tokyo. IP transit service in Latin America is even more expensive, with median GigE port Prices ranging from USD73 per month in Buenos Aires to USD86 per month in Santiago." "Disparities suggest that there is plenty of room for IP transit Prices in Asia and Latin America to decline. However, because Prices in both the US and Europe are declining at least as fast as Prices in higher cost regions, wide price disparities will likely persist for years to come," said TeleGeography analyst Erik Kreifeldt.
