1916: The tank makes its debut as a battlefield weapon, attacking the Germans as part of a British assault near Bois d'Elville, or Delville Wood, on the Western Front. The crude, 14-ton monster that breasted the German trenches that day was the culmination of an idea 145 years in the making. The concept of an armored assault vehicle dated back to 1770, with the first appearance of the caterpillar track. A precursor of the modern tank -- a Steam-powered tractor -- was actually used by the British army during the Crimean War. Only a few of these vehicles were built, though, and they carried no offensive weapons of their own. In 1899, Frederick Simms developed an engine-driven "motor war Car." It was armor-plated and carried two Maxim machine guns, making it more akin to the armored Car than to the tank as we know it. Simms offered it to the British army, but was turned down. In the run-up to World War I , the British High Command remained indifferent to the concept an armored assault weapon, preferring to concentrate on infantry and cavalry. But the tank (or "landship" as it was then known, because it was regarded as a kind of land-based warship) had some influential advocates -- including First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill, whose Landship Committee kept the idea alive. In fact, the first tanks were manned not by army personnel but by naval ratings and officers, since the Royal Navy was already responsible for the operati ...

We are excited to announce that we will now be carrying a selection of books from well known Vancouver area railway photographer Nils Huxtable (some with co-author Ron Zeil) as well as the 2009 Steamscenes 'Nils Huxtable's World of Steam' Calendar. Books include 'Steam Beneath the Red Star', a fascinating look a Soviet, Eastern European and other nations last days of Steam; 'A World of Steam', a photo album of Steam from around the world; and 'Seasons of Steam', a color pictorial of preserved British Steam. All books and the Steamscenes 2009 'World of Steam' calendar can be found under Misc/Other Manufacturers products (click here) NILS HUXTABLE was born in Neath, Wales in 1948. Fascinated by trains at an early age, he spent many hours lineside in former Great Western Railway territory, spotting" Steam locomotives. In 1957, his growing interest was interrupted by relocation to California, where the streamliners of Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Union Pacific broadened his horizons. Summer holidays spent in Britain and on the Continent when thousands of Steam engines were still active intensified the wanderlust. Graduating from Cal-State Long Beach in 1970 with a BA. degree in English, Nils made his first round-the-world trip in search of Steam, which included the magnificent 4-8-4s on the Trans-Siberian. Since then, he has logged train, air and rental Car miles in the hundreds of thousands. In between overseas Steam tours, Nils reside ... Source: www.welcometowallyworld.com --- 89 days ago

Decisions! Decisions! Labour Day weekend forced me to choose between Vancouver's 2008 Steamworks Concours and the annual Victoria Wooden Boat Show . In past years I'd journeyed to the mainland by ferry and stayed in a downtown hotel at considerable expense to this non-profit site. This year I decided to stay home. The Wooden Boat Show takes place in Victoria's picturesque harbor and is dominated by rich men's power yachts from the 20's and 30's but I did manage to find a pair of elegant wooden speedboats plus some vintage Steam-powered launches. (It was Steam on the Atlantic that opened up America to European emigrants.) Fortunately our ClassicalDrives correspondent Nigel Matthews was in Gastown (where the Vancouver Steamworks Concours takes place), fulfilling his usual role as judge, yet somehow finding time to photograph three fascinating vintage British sports cars. I'll feature all three in the next few days, beginning with this 1947 HRG 1500 with Singer engine. One of many small British specialist manufacturers, HRG won the 1.5 litre class at Le Mans for the second time in 1949. Fifty-nine years later a three-Car team won the 2006 Vintage Sports Car Club 2-hour team relay race at Donington Park. Out of 241 cars manufactured, it is estimated that 225 survive and many are still in use. [Photo: Nigel Matthews] See full article . The British Steam Challenge, Charles Burnett's bid to beat the land speed record for a kettle is a classic story of men In sheds led by a visionary with a good strong hammer. The original record of 127.7mph was set by Fred Marriot in 1907 driving, or puffing or whatever, a Stanley Steamer, which sounds like it may have also done a nice line in healthy vegetables. This latest attempt is a Boys Own story of Empire-building ingenuity with the added dash of romance that the test driver of Primus One is Don Welsh, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell. Actually, the Car is called Inspiration and essentially water is boiled using camping gas. No trees were injured in the making of this Car. On the face of it this should be welcome. But it's not. Before you can say Stephenson this idea will be taken up by the barmy green army and James Watt and his inspirational cup of tea paraded as the saviours of the age. For heaven's sake be careful. The lethal combination of camping stoves and water has turned countless Car boots into blazing saunas in English lay-bys. An everyday Steam Car is not new ground. In 1996 VW developed ZEE, a Steam engine designed to fit in a Skoda Fabia. Bringing things nicely to another Skoda. The Octavia Scout. The Scout is an alternative, for those who need some low key 4x4 scrambling ability, to the ubiquitous crossover. I think the County Shows may be a peculiarly British - perhaps even English - phenomenon. Probably their purpose may have wandered over the years as ‘Revenue’ has necessitated watering down ‘Local Content’; why else would the Devon Show have a ‘Yorkshire’s Best for Outdoor Clothing’ tent? Is Dartmoor any less hospitable to its inhabitants than the Pennines? So many stalls and stands seem to have lost their County focus and simply be the same band of wandering traders, and quite what Tesco were doing presenting themselves as Local Food, heaven only knows! But the Devon Show still had enough wonderful tents with displays of local crafts and skills to entertain me (and several thousand others). I really liked the Devon Beekeeping tent with its awards for things like ‘Best Malted Honey Loaf’ and ‘Best Dry Mead’. And I particularly loved watching a skinny chick outshoot her chap, with a perfect 10/10 on the Clay Pigeons (the Barbour probably helped). But there was also a wonderful opportunity to revel in unmitigated nostalgia (is there a book title in that?) with displays of Steam engines (see below) and older vehicles that hark back to a gentler motoring times. Like the two below: an Austin 8 and a BSA Bantam. An Austin 8 was my first Car: bought for my 17th birthday by my father because it was sensible (I had been urging him to buy me an MG TC or a boat-bodied Ulster 7 of doubtful provenance, seen in Fairman’s Garage). We are learning a lot about communications in Cornwall. It's quite the place to be, this end foot of England, kicking the ocean waves of the Atlantic. If you want to do a home education project on communications, I can recommend it. I can recommend the whiskery chaps, members of the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club, tipped up at the top of the Lizard peninsula, in the shed there now, at Poldhu. In this place, Marconi sent his first wireless dot dot dot to Newfoundland, across all those waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and in doing so scared the knickers off the cable company down the road who'd just spent the economy of England dropping cable lines on the sea floor, to be chewed at by sharks and sat on by barnacles. In these days, the radio amateurs hang around in a rebuilt version of Marconi's shed. They seem a decent lot of eccentrics in their coastal sweaters and breezy sea salt faces. Admittedly, one or two of them look like they might've been living in Marconi's shed since 1901, and are as likely to be enticed out of it, blinking into today's bright world, as they are to be enticed to sit inside a burning Car, but no matter to us. After all, we home educators actually seek out people like this. These are the lost and best of British eccentrics. In this world of pin numbers, bar codes and Steam rollering normality, we actually think these wonderfully mad people have something to teach us. This year British Columbia is celebrating 150 years as a Crown Colony. There are many events being organized around the province and the first one I was able to take in was the CP Spirit of 150 Rail Tour . From the website: From June 12 to July 6, the CP Spirit of 150 Rail Tour will visit British Columbia communities along the Canadian Pacific route. The tour is co-sponsored by Canadian Pacific, which will operate, staff and maintain the train. The CP Spirit of 150 Train includes the vintage CP 2816 Empress Steam Train and support cars, two vintage passenger coaches, a vintage business Car, a heritage baggage Car converted into a travelling museum and a vintage stage Car. The train rolled in to my hometown just before 5pm on Thursday, June 26th. It's previous stop was the town where I work so I actually got to see it travelling between the two. (That's the picture above, the train merrily steaming it's way across the flats. I took it while I was stopped at a red light.) The train was in town from 5-9 and I spent the first two hours of the evening volunteering at the BerryBeat Festival booth (BerryBeat is next week. Watch here for updates :)) The best part about being in the booth was that I had a front row seat for the stage show. Unfortunately I didn't think to take pictures :( After my shift in the booth Mom and Dad came down and we toured the museum Car together.
