Gordon Brown has briefed British MPs on the G8 Summit held in Japan earlier this week. We’ve extracted the section about Zimbabwe and included it in this post. Britain's Parliament banned the military wing of Hizbullah on Tuesday to punish it for supporting terrorist activities in Iraq and the Palestinian territories. The ban makes it a crime to join or support the group's military wing. Britain's minister in charge of fighting terrorism Tony McNulty said he had evidence that the movement was linked to insurgent groups in Iraq that had attacked coalition soldiers. ...

William Wilberforce (1759–1833) was a British politician , philanthropist and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade . A native of Hull , Yorkshire , he began his political career in 1780 and became the independent Member of Parliament for Yorkshire . In 1785 he underwent a conversion experience and became an evangelical Christian , resulting in major changes to his lifestyle and a lifelong concern for reform. He championed causes and campaigns such as the Society for Suppression of Vice , the introduction of Christianity to India, the creation of a free colony in Sierra Leone , the foundation of the Church Mission Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . Wilberforce headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade until the eventual passage of the Slave Trade Act in 1807. In later years, Wilberforce supported the campaign for the complete abolition of slavery, and continued his involvement after 1826, when he resigned from Parliament because of his failing health. That campaign led to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire ; Wilberforce died just three days after hearing that the passage of the Act through Parliament was assured. Americans and British diplomats are trying to encourage a quick exit from office for Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, a staunch Western anti-terrorism ally, before he suffers the disgrace of impeachment, Pakistani officials said Wednesday. In recent days, Musharraf has seen a collapse in support, as three of Pakistan's four provincial parliaments overwhelmingly have approved resolutions that declare him unfit for office. The fourth is expected to follow shortly. The provincial votes were symbolic, but early next week the formal prosecution will begin with an impeachment motion in the national Parliament. It's now clear that Pakistan's ruling coalition has the two-thirds majority needed to impeach Musharraf. More on War Wire ...

According to The Telegraph newspaper here in the UK, British Members of Parliament are kicking up a right old stink about YouTube. Specifically regarding what it does, or more to the point what it does not do, to prevent sexually explicit and violent video clips from being posted. The House of Commons "Culture and Media Committee" says that it is completely unimpressed with the systems that YouTube has in place to filter out sexual and violent content. Surely, the point is that there is no active filtering to prevent the publication of such material. Instead, YouTube relies upon user... ...

Call the new one from the Matthew Herbert Big Band "phoned in," and, well, you'd be right. After all, the previously mentioned There's Me and There's You includes not one , but at least two tracks featuring sounds relayed by fans via telephone. But you know what? That's probably the least interesting thing on it. When There's Me and There's You arrives on October 28 via !K7 (not Herbert's own Accidental imprint, as previously reported), audiophiles should keep their ears peeled for samples of "a match being struck in the Houses of Parliament, one of a 100 nails being hammered into a coffin, [and] vocals recorded at a Kent landfill site," as well as "100 credit cards being cut up," "the incubator system which kept Herbert's prematurely born son alive," and, wait for it..."the sound of 70 condoms being scraped along the floor of the British Museum." What, Matthew, no cow uterus ? But wait, that's not all! This latest high-concept offering from Herbert is also, yes, a protest record. The meticulous producer originally wanted to create There's Me entirely from sounds recorded in the British Houses of Parliament, but his requests to work there were denied. Herbert didn't get mad, though; he got creative. As he tells it in a press release, "That's what [ There's Me track] 'Waiting' is about. What outraged me was they seemed more worried that this would bring the House into disrepute than the fact that they went into an illegal war with ...

clipped by: carrerinyes clipper's remarks: It is said that in recognition of the service rendered by the goat, the people decided to institute a special festival in his honour and this festival has been held ever since. Other legends regarding the origin of "King Puck" relates to the time of Daniel O'Connell, who in 1808 was an unknown barrister. It seems that before that year, the August fair held in Killorglin had been a toll fair, but an Act of the British Parliament empowered the Viceroy or Lord Lieutenant in Dublin to make an order, at his own discretion, making it unlawful to levy tolls at cattle, horse or sheep fairs. Tolls in Killorglin at this time were collected by the local landlord - Mr Harman Blennerhassett - who had fallen into bad graces with the authorities in Dublin Castle and as a result the Viceroy robbed him of his right to levy tolls. Blennerhassett enlisted the services of the young Daniel O'Connell, who in an effort to reverse the decision decided that goats were not covered by the document and that th Clip Source: www.puckfair.ie every august 10th, 11th & 12th" /> Welcome! Britain's second-largest city, Birmingham, has a new skyline - only it belongs to its Alabama namesake. Birmingham City Council distributed 720,000 leaflets that praised residents for exceeding recycling targets, carrying a message that read: "Thank You Birmingham." The message appeared stamped across a photograph of the city's skyline. But the photo was not of Birmingham, England, but of Birmingham, Alabama. It's the second time British officials have mistakenly used images of Birmingham, Alabama. Three lawmakers who represent Birmingham at the European Parliament accidentally used a picture of the U.S. city on their Internet site in January. "I would have thought the council would take more care," said Birmingham resident Jon Cooper. "I can't believe no one at the town hall noticed." Britain's Birmingham is famed for its modernist Bullring shopping mall, with its distinctive metallic curved exterior and an extensive network of canals, churches and historical buildings. The Alabama city's skyline includes the Wachovia Tower, University of Alabama buildings and skyscrapers. ...
