Author: MARY BRAID But after the Second World War, ministers, aided by respected charities including Barnardos, the Salvation Army and the Catholic Church, did exactly that, emptying the nation's orphanages of a generation of children, some as young as four, who were shipped to Australia, Canada and other outposts of the empire. The children were told their parents were dead. In fact, many of them, destitute after the war, were very much alive and believed their children were in temporary care. When some sought to reclaim their children from the orphanages, they were told they had been adopted. Many of the child migrants - who remember their 'new start' being smoothed with stories of exotic fruits, delicious sweets and 'kangaroos who would take you to school' - now claim that they suffered years of neglect, beatings and sexual abuse by the religious orders and charities that were supposed to care for them. British solicitors are trying to formulate a claim for 40 child migrants sent to Australia. Most are now in their fourties and are still British citizens. Legal action is already under way in Australia. John Hennessey, 55, a child migrant, says: 'We were only children and we were betrayed and abandoned by the British government.' Child migration peaked between 1947-50, but 'orphans' were still been exported as late as 1967. Few adults knew or cared until 1986, when Margaret Humphreys, a Nottingham social worker, received an inquiry ...

Distaff Penumbra is now – without a doubt – Britain’s most famous actress, easily eclipsing all others, and, it seems, now at the pinnacle of her career. However, when she first appeared on cinema screens in the mid-70s in the (very) seminal Swedish Plumbers On The Job , where she played a young housewife seemingly distraught at her malfunctioning washing machine, there was very little indication that she would go on to bigger things, and better films too. One of those bigger things was - of course - Truncheon Polevaulter, the very well-blessed male actor, with whom she made a whole series of films, namely: Hot Raunchy Dirty Filth Volumes I-VII , in which Penumbra’s acting ability and range were both tested to the limit, playing such roles as: a sexually dissatisfied career woman, a sexually-dissatisfied housewife (in a magisterial reprise of her first ever cinematic role), a sexually-dissatisfied lady of the manor, a sexually-dissatisfied canteen manageress, a sexually-dissatisfied nurse, a sexually-dissatisfied diversity outreach co-ordinator and so on. It seemed inevitable, in a way, which, after such intimate contact with each other in their professional lives, that Penumbra and Polevaulter should become romantically involved in their private lives, so, for several years - as they worked on that series of films which made them both household names - they also become lovers. However, when Penumbra took on her greatest, most famou ...

According to a report published by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor entrepreneurship education is a key factor in influencing people to start their own businesses. However the creation of such schemes is seen as inadequate. Only 18 per cent of adults have received any type of enterprise education in the UK, and this number only rises to 21 per cent across the 38 countries when quizzed as part of the research. So what’s going wrong? While traditional subjects are dying out, there is a case for introducing more vocational courses built around an individual’s future potential. Will physics play a significant part in the life of a businessman, or should you let young adults decide this for themselves? A course in entrepreneurialism is a great way to get set for the real world but surely old-fashioned subjects are the foundations on which to build a business mind? Report co-author and Babson Professor Donna Kelley definitely believes that training at a young age cultivates an entrepreneurial spirit early on. Do you agree? By Khalid Amayreh in occupied Jerusalem Last week, a few Palestinian journalists including my self, had the opportunity to meet with Martin Day, a spokesman of the British government. The meeting, which was hosted by the Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN), took place in Ramallah. In his introductory remarks, Day gave the impression that the imminent renewal of peace talks between the almost completely helpless Palestinian Authority (PA) and a brazenly insolent Israel, ruled by the most hawkish government in the Jewish state's history, will eventually achieve peace and lead to the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. He also lauded the Obama administration, underscoring its "sincerity" towards resolving the enduring Palestinian cause. Day's remarks were received with disbelief and dismay by the small audience of journalists, writers and cameramen who thought that Day either didn't know what he was talking about, or he did know what he was saying but was detached not only from truth but from reality as well. As a torrent of questions was directed at him, the British diplomat switched "from straight talk" to PR talk, recollecting some of the "pro-Palestinian" gestures and postures made recently by the British government, such as supporting the Goldstone Report at the United Nations. Day was asked if he thought that the flaccid British approach toward Israel - for example, asking nicely if the Jewish state would like to refrain ...

British Forestry Commissioner Tim Rollinson gave a lecture recently at the University of British Columbia highlighting the importance of forests as the world’s population grows to an estimated 8 billion people in the next fifteen years. Forests are at the forefront in the fight against climate change, to lock up carbon, oxygenate the atmosphere and conserve water. This new view of forests is a big change from how they were viewed in Britain at one time. “By the time the Romans arrived in Britain around 2,000 years ago, forest cover had been reduced to around half of its original state. Even so, when Julius Caesar arrived he was recorded as saying that ‘the whole island is one horrible forest’! At the beginning of the 20th century, our forest cover was at an all time low – just 5% of the land area. Using examples from Britain, Mr. Rollinson emphasized the need for foresters need to be able to conserve, harvest and manage forests sustainably, and restore the forests that have been lost. Mr. Rollinson chairs the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration , a collaborative network of people that promotes responsible forestry and reforestation. It would be interesting if he had any words to say about British Columbia’s decision to axe away at its own forest policies. Whereas Britain can be proud of its reforestation, whereas the coastal Douglas firs on British Columbia’s west coast have almost been eradicated because there has be ...

LABOUR’S immigration policy is in tatters after official figures revealed that 20,000 failed asylum seekers are allowed to stay in Britain each year. The cost of benefit payments to support them has rocketed from £4million in 2003-04 to £73million last year. The backlog of illegal immigrants awaiting deportation is growing fast as the UK Border Agency fails to keep pace with rejected applicants. The Home Office has admitted that less than a third of failed asylum seekers who were notified that they were liable for removal were kicked out in 2008. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...ain-every-year http://www.policeoracle.com/news/Onl...-Go_22454.html ...
