Jennifer and John Webley of Santa Rosa have given $50,000 to the new "Bridging the Doyle" scholarship campaign at Santa Rosa Junior College. Blog readers will remember reading about the new campaign in coverage of the annual community luncheon ( replete with quiz ) and address given by SRJC president Robert Agrella in May. The Webleys have committed $50,000 to the program that is meant to provide scholarships to students who have lost out on their chance for a Doyle Scholarship. The Doyle Scholarship has awarded $76 million to nearly 120,000 students in six decades of scholarships funded by Exchange Bank stock dividends. But Exchange Bank has suspended its dividend payments this year and no new Doyle applications are being accepted. Agrella said last month that generating $1.2 million for the bridge fund is achievable. See that story here John Webley founded Advanced Fibre Communications in Petaluma, as well as Turin Networks and now manages Pax Streamline, a clean tech startup in Novato. For more on the fundraising campaign, check out their website at www.santarosa.edu/bridgingthedoyle or by calling the SRJC Foundation at 527-4348. ...

Imagine if engineers could look at an MRI or CAT scan of a bridge structure to diagnose potential ailments just as doctors do now with the human body — think how that might aid in preventing costly problems or even tragic failures in the future. A team of researchers from Rutgers University is not only imagining it, but actually working to see if there is a practical, non-invasive approach to seeing what’s happening inside of a bridge. And they are doing it right here in Charles City. Actually, the research team is in Iowa on a Department of Transportation contract to test “nondestructive evaluation methods” on seven different bridges around the state, with Charles City’s Brantingham bridge being one of them. The crew began testing on Monday, using a variety of different technologies, and was scheduled to be in town approximately three days, but Tuesday’s rain may have delayed things some. For more, please see Wednesday's Press.   ...

Here is a two part video discussion with Tom Fisher, VP of Cloud Computing and David Karel, VP of Product Marketing at SuccessFactors I recorded at their SuccessConnect Conference. Successfactors, as I wrote earlier this week, provide an Integrated talent performance management software as a service offering that aims to optimize workforces of all sizes and bridge the gap between strategy and execution. According to SuccessFactors: • 95% of employees don't understand the strategy of the organization for which they work • 50% of the average employee's time is spent in non productive work • 70% of your operating expenses are your workforce • 84% of companies say they are not using their workforce to its full potential •... ...

Wi-Fi Planet: "In very humid conditions, there theoretically could be enough moisture in the air to absorb some of the wireless signal. But RF experts tend to doubt the effect would be very strong unless your router is literally inside a cloud. Generally speaking, the longer your wireless link, the more likely it may be affected by humidity." ...

Leslie Clark and her husband have been trying to communicate with their autistic 7-year-old son, JW, for years, but until last month, the closest they got was rudimentary sign language. He’s “a little bit of a mini-genius,” Clark said, but like many autistic children, JW doesn’t speak at all. Desperate to communicate with him, she considered buying a specialized device such as the ones at his elementary school in Lincoln, Neb. But the text-to-speech machines are huge, heavy and expensive; a few go for $8,000 to $10,000. Then a teacher told her about a new application a researcher had developed for, of all things, the iPhone and iPod Touch. Clark drove to the local Best Buy and picked up a Touch, then downloaded the “app” from iTunes. Total cost: about $500. A month later, JW goes everywhere with the slick touch-screen mp3 player strapped to his arm. It lets him touch icons that voice basic comments or questions, such as, “I want Grandma’s cookies” or “I’m angry — here’s why.” He uses his “talker” to communicate with everyone — including his service dog, Roscoe, who listens to voice commands through the tiny speakers. It’s a largely untold story of Apple’s popular audio devices. It is not known how many specialized apps are out there, but Apple touts a handful on iTunes, among them ones that help users do American Sign Language and others like Proloquo2Go, which helps JW speak. The app also aids people with Down syndrome, cerebral ...
