Filed under: Bears , NFC North Brian Urlacher was still looking for a new deal last Friday , and yesterday, it finally happened. No holdout necessary, apparently, even though those empty threats were made (as they often are during contract disputes), and while the Bears Pro Bowl middle linebacker wasn't interested in a one-year extension, the organization made too attractive an offer to turn down. Specifically, an extra $18 million to play tackle football in Chicago through 2012. But Urlacher also warns against signing long-term, very lucrative contracts because, well, you might just outplay them . ''I would definitely caution anyone signing a deal that long,'' Urlacher said of the nine-year, $56.65 million contract he signed in 2003. ''It's very enticing at the time because it's a lot of guaranteed money up front, and you want to get that security. But at the same time, you don't know how you are going to play, either. You may outplay it. ''I'm glad it's done now. It feels good because they didn't have to do anything. That was a nice deal they offered me, and we ended up getting it worked out.'' Yes, just because somebody offers you $6.3 million a year for nine years, doesn't mean you should just accept it. Of course, there's always a chance you get injured, or don't perform like you once did, but what's the chance that happens? I'm fine with Urlacher getting as much as he can -- NFL careers are notoriously short and the salary ...

Filed under: Bears Training camp is less than two weeks away and the Bears are still a mess . Of course, no one expected the team to be magically transformed into contenders this offseason, but despite questions at just about every offensive position, there's also plenty of uncertainty with the team's best player, Brian Urlacher . The Pro Bowl linebacker has been looking for a new deal for some time, and while the organization is interested in keeping Urlacher in Chicago, it'll require some compromise. Which could be a problem . Meanwhile, the Bears might have to be concerned with Brian Urlacher's status. The star linebacker still wants more than the one-year contract extension the Bears have offered on top of the nine-year, $57 million deal he signed in 2003. The extension through 2012 includes $5 million up front. This could be a lingering issue, or it could mean nothing. Last year, Lance Briggs did all sorts of arm-waving before finally signing his franchise tender, playing the season, and re-signing for much less than he originally thought he was worth. For all the bluster about holding out, players usually opt for a paycheck over making a point on principle. In less depressing news, first-round pick Chris Williams is close to signing with the team. He's already one of the Bears' best offensive players, which should tell you everything you need to know about the Bears' offense.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  ...

The Chicago Bears will start training camp this week with a happy middle linebacker. The Bears have reportedly given star linebacker Brian Urlacher a contract extension on his already existing four-year, $25 million contract. Urlacher's new deal, according to ESPN, will extend him into 2012, and he will make $7.5 million for that year. He also has the option to make $500,000 through a workout bonus in 2012. Also included in the deal is a $6 million signing bonus and a $1 million raise in each of the next four seasons. The deal has him making close to $9 million per year and places him as one of the highest paid defenders in the league. Urlacher and the Bears have been at odds over his contract all offseason. Since he had four years left, the Bears were not obligated to take a second look at his contract. Chicago's star defenseman missed some voluntary team workouts but no mandatory meetings during the squabble. Urlacher is without a doubt the centerpiece of the Bears' defense that re-signed fellow defensive stars Lance Briggs and Tommie Harris this summer. In 2007, Urlacher recorded 123 tackles, with five sacks, five interceptions, and one defensive touchdown, despite lingering back and neck injuries. He started all 16 games in the season. ...

The Chicago Bears and linebacker Brian Urlacher agreed to a contract extension Monday through the 2012 season, according to published reports. The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported that the extension is worth $18 million, including a $6 million signing bonus. The Bears declined to confirm the deal. Players were scheduled to report to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais on Tuesday. The Bears are still looking to sign top draft choice Chris Williams, an offensive tackle. Urlacher, entering his ninth season, signed a nine-year, $57 million contract in 2003 that would have expired after 2011. read more ...

Before Devin Hester surprised the Bears by not showing up for the first day of training camp Wednesday, the big worry was how much Brian Urlacher’s contract tussle would distract the Bears. The answer: Not at all. And not just because Urlacher, with four years left on his old deal, signed a five-year extension with $18 million in new money earlier this week. “It wouldn’t have been a distraction if I hadn’t got it done,” Urlacher said Wednesday. “They had me for four more years. Luckily, it worked out and I got one more year on there and some other things. I got it fixed up, but either way I was going to be here.” He also seems happier than at any point last year, when he gave one-word answers to the media and was bothered by back and neck injuries. He said both are fine now. “It won’t be a test to see how my neck holds up. I’m not worried about it. Doctors cleared me. I trust them. If they tell me I’m OK, I’m OK.” And if Urlacher is happy, his teammates are happy. “There were clouds everywhere yesterday, and here we go, the sun comes out the day of practice,” defensive end Alex Brown said. “It’s nice not to have stuff lingering over you, to have the leader of your defense, and maybe the face of the franchise, in the fold and here on time.” Kreutz, Dvoracek hurt Running back Kevin Jones (knee) was put on the Physically Unable to Perform list. That was expected. But center Olin Kreutz (Achilles) was a surprise. Also, defensive tack ...

Peyton Manning. LaDainian Tomlinson. Brian Urlacher. If you were starting an NFL team from scratch to compete this fall, these three guys would seem to be the perfect place to start. But what if you had to take into account the $116 million salary cap for the 2008 season? Now, Manning ($18.7M cap number), Tomlinson ($7.8M) and Urlacher ($5.8M) might not fit into your 53-man roster plans. Salary Cap Roster Challenge - Dom Bonvissuto - SI.com ...
