Brian Grazer says that "L.A. Riots," Spike Lee's long-awaited look at the incendiary events that paralyzed Los Angeles for four terrifying days in 1992, is back on track. The movie, from an original script by Writers Guild dissident John Ridley, could possibly begin shooting later this year. The peripatetic producer has been busy with his latest lineup of A-list filmmaker projects, led by Clint Eastwood's "Changeling," due this fall, and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon," which arrives in December. But he says he is moving full speed ahead with the Lee film. ...

To many in L.A., the 1992 riots mark a painful moment they'd like to forget. But Patrick Goldstein is reporting that a big-screen take on the L.A. riots appears to be fast-tracked -- with some high-profile talent attached:Brian Grazer says that "L.A. The uber-producer explains to Patrick what will make the picture less a period piece and more like a "war movie." Yes, a war movie.Grazer insists that "L.A. Riots" is more of a vivid drama than a bomb-throwing broadside. "It's a war movie set in a modern city like Los Angeles," he says. "There were 56 deaths, more than 2,000 buildings that caught fire and all sorts of horrific destruction. So we see the anger and the emotion, but the story enables us to see the strife from all perspectives. You get a close look at the sociopolitical dynamics from the perspective of the cops, the African Americans, the Koreans, from all these different people. And then you get to ar ...

Former LA Times editor Andres Martinez's new lawsuit is a sad story of betrayal that should convince any journalist never to date a publicist, unless she can somehow find one who is not crafty and constantly scheming to leverage the relationship. Martinez left his job editing the editorial page amid scandal. He tried to have film producer Brian Grazer guest edit his section even though his girlfriend Kelly Mullens was flacking for Grazer. Dirty and stupid and unethical, right? Well, hold one one second: Martinez says in his suit that Mullens promised him she had recused herself from working with Grazer, a client of her firm, at least on this one project. This turned out to be an awful awful lie. Writes Matt Belloni at the Hollywood Reporter : ...when the date of the issue drew near, a draft press release was circulated with Mullens' name on it and Martinez later discovered that Mullens had "concealed her presence from Plaintiff during a conference discussing the section." ...Martinez... now says Mullens caused him irreparable harm by "having his professional reputation damaged, by his constructive discharge from The Los Angeles Times , and by the emotional distress and suffering that has resulted." Martinez can't pin everything on the flack, however, since he should have known from the start that pimping a client of his girlfriend was going to get him in trouble, no matter how hard (and futilely) he tried to ethically cleanse the ...

L.A. Observed has the dirt on a series of legal maneuvers by and related to former LAT Op/Ed editor Andres Martinez . If you'll recall , Martinez resigned from his post last year after offering to let producer Brian Grazer guest-edit the Sunday Opinion section. Grazer was repped by Martinez's then-girlfriend, Kelly Mullens . At the time, Martinez said there was nothing fishy about the arrangement, but now it turns out he blames his whole downfall on his former flame ... and has filed a lawsuit to prove it! Mullens, for her part, says the suit is, according to LAO ""backlash over a restraining order obtained by Mullens earlier this year." Classy! Does Denis Leary need to be rescued from Bart Simpson? The Rescue Me star will play himself in the Oct. 5 episode of The Simpsons, losing his cool at a celebrity golf event and throwing his cell phone in anger. When Bart finds the phone, he uses it to make prank calls — and even winds up accepting a role for Leary in Brian Grazer's big-screen adaptation of Everybody Poops (yes, Grazer also guests). Meanwhile, Julia Louis-Dreyfus reprises her role as Snake's girlfriend — and this time, she's pregnant! — in the Sept. 28 season opener. (Plot: Homer becomes a bounty hunter.) In other Simpsons business news, two billionaires — Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos — will lend their pipes to a December installment in which Mr. Burns wins a pro basketball team during a poker game. Notes Simpsons executive producer Al Jean of that episode: "It certainly has the richest cast in the history of cartoons." addCredit("Jim Spellman/WireImage ") ...

Gawker has some of the background on this saga. We posted about it earlier . Basically, former LAT editor Andres Martinez sued his flack ex-girlfriend Kelly Mullens after she filed a restraining order against him. Martinez was fired from his job at the LAT last year for seeing Mullens because her boss Alan Mayer was the publicist for producer Brian Grazer and he was doing a collaboration with the Times. We have to really focus hard to care slightly about this. However, a person calling himself Alan Mayer sent us an email from an address that no longer exists, to tell us a story that he thought was 'interesting'. That's not suspicious. We're going to publish the entire thing because it's too creepy to paraphrase. The thing that we find most amusing, is that there are typos in it that seem like they're there intentionally. Like we'll never think that a newspaper man would make those errors - we're totally thrown off the scent. Good job! Here's the letter: Here's a great story for you: Andrew Hauptman , the Hollywood/pro sports impresario who so wisely married into billions when he wed Ellen Bronfman of Seagram fortune, is risking it all by chasing the same Hollywood publicist/ femme fatale that got Brian Grazer and the LA Times in a fix last year. The affair began last year as the two traveled together to Chicago repeatedly on his plane to oversee his acquisition of the Chicago Fire soccer team. This same comely blonde, Kelly Mulle ...

Movie producer Brian Grazer recently interviewed candidates for a new cultural attaché , someone who would be responsible for Grazer's ongoing cultural education, keeping him abreast of current goings-on in the news, science, music, etc. "They have to be really resourceful," Grazer said. "I like to meet people in dangerous organizations, and my cultural attaché finds out who that person is -- who runs the Yakuza, or the Masons, or MI5." I am nowhere near that resourceful, but I have often thought of parleying my blogging experience into providing a similar service for individuals, doing what I do on kottke.org but on an individual basis, tailored to the needs of a specific person, or probably more usefully, a specific company.
