Twenty-seven years ago, David Byrne and Brian Eno changed the face of popular music. Can they do it again? By Alexis Petridis ... Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com --- 2 days ago
Musicians David Byrne and Brian Eno, the historic duo who brought the world "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" more than 20 years ago, have a new album out, "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today." But don't feel you have to run to the record store (if you can still find one of those open near you) to buy the CD. There are many ways to experience this album, including the most radical -- putting the entire thing on your own website and blog (as I've done above) to listen to it for free. For those who want to own it, they can buy directly from the "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" website . The digital album costs $8.99. The CD and the digital album together go for $11.99. For the deluxe package, including a film about the album, it's $69.99. (Some people really love these guys). Byrne and Eno are doing all this without the help of a label. Instead, they turned to Topspin , a Santa Monica-based software company, which is powering the direct fan engagement and the e-commerce behind the album's site. Topspin aims to help musicians, popular and unknown, connect with their fans using ... ... software tools and the Internet. "This is going to be the way that people release albums in the future," said Topspin CEO Ian Rogers, Yahoo's former general manager of music. Rogers pointed to the success of similar efforts by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, both of which directly marketed to fans and gave people flexible ways to experi ... As Pitchfork news reported , David Byrne and Brian Eno have completed a new album called Everything That Happens Will Happen Today , which will be available this month from Nonesuch . The first track, "Strange Overtones", is available for download from the album's website . After one listen, it sounds very promising, these two really do bring out the best in each other. "This groove is out of fashion," Byrne sings, "These beats are 20 years old." Ha. (Note that you need to give up an e-mail address for the track.) The last time David Byrne and Brian Eno linked up, the resulting album – 1981's My Life In the Bush of Ghosts – changed the course of pop music, although it would take the industry the best part of a decade to catch up with their collaging techniques, which in effect invented sampling. Harnessed to lock-tight rhythms, its layered montages of sonic bric-a-brac sought to encompass the vast breadth of audio-social experience becoming more easily available as communications technology shrank the world. ... Aha, that's more like it! Those feeling a little stiffed by the meager offering of live dates David Byrne served up a short while back can rest easy: the Talking Head has revealed the first leg of a generous world tour, set to storm the States and Canada as summer turns to fall. This is, of course, the "Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno" tour-- which, it bears repeating , features David Byrne but not Brian Eno . Instead, Byrne will focus on Talking Heads and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts material created in conjunction with Eno. I guess you could say he'll be there in spirit. Look for the North American leg of Byrne's journey to kick off September 16 in Pennsylvania and wrap up November 8, also in Pennsylvania. Mr. Byrne then intends to hit up "Australasia" in early 2009 and Europe this coming March, though those dates have yet to materialize. What has materialized: "Strange Overtones", the previously mentioned free download off Byrne and Eno's forthcoming Everything That Happens Will Happen Today , which you can nab here now with but the click of a mouse and the sacrifice of an email address (which the guys promise not to use for nefarious purposes). Everything is due in download and stream form August 18, with its physical counterparts slated for release "later in the fall." Cool beans. read more ... Source: upcoming.yahoo.com --- 15 days ago
