Breast-feeding, self-exam, and exercise practices before and after Reduction mammoplasty. Ann Plast Surg. 2008 Oct;61(4):375-9 Authors: Brown JR, Holton LH, Chung TL, Slezak S The current indications for Reduction mammoplasty include the relief of painful physical symptoms of macromastia. Numerous studies have demonstrated not only improvement in physical symptoms following Reduction mammoplasty, but postoperative psychological benefits as well, including increased ability to participate in physical activity as a result of pain relief and decreased Breast mass. Reduction mammoplasty may have additional effects on the patient's ability to Breast-feed and perform Breast self-exam. The present study is a retrospective study of the effects of Reduction mammoplasty on Breast-feeding, Breast self-exam, physical symptoms, and physical activity. One-hundred and forty-one patients who underwent Reduction mammoplasty at our institution between the years 1996-2005 agreed to participate in the study. Each was asked a series of questions in order to assess changes in symptoms and behaviors including Breast-feeding and Breast self-exam practices before and after the surgery. Patients were also asked questions regarding their pain symptoms and physical activity profiles. Ninety-seven percent of the participants claimed to have back, neck, and/or shoulder pain that was either significantly improved or completely resolved. Moreover, 100% of patients re ...

Smaller boobs are all the rage. Unhappy with her ultra-large breasts, Jordan (pictured above) recently sought surgery abroad, Kerry Katona has reduced her double GG to more manageable proportions, and Ulrika Jonsson says she needs Breast Reduction because her size 34G boobs are “on the road”. I’m not surprised Ulrika’s doing this because it’s one of the cosmetic operations that significantly improves quality of life and reduces the pain suffered by women with large and sagging breasts. It now accounts for about 15 per cent of all cosmetic procedures performed in the UK and is rising at a rate of 10 per cent a year. In the cosmetic surgery top 10 list, Breast Reduction comes second only to Breast augmentation and way above face and neck lifts. But there’s a balance to be struck. Breast Reduction causes scars and can lead to loss of nipple sensation and, unless done very carefully, to the inability to breastfeed. ...

I've been thinking for a while about a Breast Reduction. I've always had large breasts, but it seems they get in the way sometimes. Also, I had a physical today and my doctor suggested that I am at increased risk of Breast cancer with more Breast tissue. I don't have cancer, so I don't mean to say that. So he's given me a referral to a plastic surgeon. I'm a little scared but also thinking how great it would be to wear itty bitty pretty bra or no bra, and during that time if someone touches my boobs I swear I want to hit them with a hot waffle iron. ...

In contrast to popular belief, bigger boobs are not necessarily an advantage as what we normally see in Hollywood fandom. In truth, bigger breasts can cause a lot of discomfort for women, as well as the possible health problems that comes with it. Surgical methods are readily available to correct this problem, however; but the costs may be too much for an average individual to handle. Read the rest of this entry » ...

[Pain palliation using unsealed radionuclides.] Schmerz. 2008 Oct 11; Authors: Kampen WU, Fischer M Chronic pain is one of the most frequent and distressing symptoms in patients suffering from bone metastases due to malignant disease. Besides pharmacological therapy using analgesics according to the WHO scheme and local surgical or radiotherapeutic treatment options, systemic radionuclide therapy is available, particularly for patients with multilocular metastatic disease. This palliative pain treatment is almost free of severe side effects and is thus indicated as a complementary therapy as part of an interdisciplinary approach in pain treatment. Moreover, preliminary data indicate a favorable cost:utility ratio. Positive clinical effects with marked Reduction of pain are described in 70-80% of patients with Breast or prostate cancer. However, complete analgesia is uncommon and, thus, most patients require analgesic treatment during the further course of their disease. PMID: 18846393 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] ...

Related Articles Is megestrol acetate a suitable option for treatment of hot flashes in women with Breast cancer? Nat Clin Pract Endocrinol Metab. 2008 Sep 30; Authors: Warren MP Chemotherapy for Breast cancer is associated with the development of hot flashes, which can cause the patient considerable discomfort. Estrogen replacement therapy alleviates the number and severity of hot flashes but is contraindicated in such cases. Alternative methods to treat hot flashes are, therefore, urgently needed. Goodwin et al. have performed a 6-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of megestrol acetate in 286 women with Breast cancer. After 3 months, 65% of the patients receiving 20 mg megestrol acetate daily had achieved an appreciable Reduction in the number of hot flashes (>/=75% from baseline), compared with 48% in the 40 mg megestrol acetate group and 14% in the placebo group. The positive effects of megestrol acetate on hot flash frequency were maintained at 6 months. In this Practice Point commentary, I discuss the key findings of Goodwin et al. and place them into clinical context, highlighting the need for additional studies of hormonal therapies in women with Breast cancer.
