Related Articles Is megestrol acetate a suitable option for Treatment of hot flashes in women with Breast Cancer? Nat Clin Pract Endocrinol Metab. 2008 Sep 30; Authors: Warren MP Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer is associated with the development of hot flashes, which can cause the patient considerable discomfort. Estrogen replacement therapy alleviates the number and severity of hot flashes but is contraindicated in such cases. Alternative methods to treat hot flashes are, therefore, urgently needed. Goodwin et al. have performed a 6-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of megestrol acetate in 286 women with Breast Cancer. After 3 months, 65% of the patients receiving 20 mg megestrol acetate daily had achieved an appreciable reduction in the number of hot flashes (>/=75% from baseline), compared with 48% in the 40 mg megestrol acetate group and 14% in the placebo group. The positive effects of megestrol acetate on hot flash frequency were maintained at 6 months. In this Practice Point commentary, I discuss the key findings of Goodwin et al. and place them into clinical context, highlighting the need for additional studies of hormonal therapies in women with Breast Cancer. Related Articles Lapatinib and ixabepilone for the Treatment of metastatic Breast Cancer. Pharmacotherapy. 2008 Oct;28(10):1255-66 Authors: Halterman PA Abstract Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of Cancer death in women. Treatment options for advanced-stage disease, although numerous, remain suboptimal. Lapatinib and ixabepilone are two new agents approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007 for the Treatment of locally advanced Breast Cancer (LABC) or metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC). When added to the existing endocrine therapies-single-agent cytotoxic therapies and combination chemotherapy regimens-lapatinib and ixabepilone offer potential Treatment strategies for disease that has become resistant to trastuzumab and the taxanes, respectively. Lapatinib is an oral dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor against members of the human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) family (HER1 or epidermal growth factor receptor [EGFR], and HER2). It is indicated for combination therapy with capecitabine for the Treatment of patients with HER2-overexpressing LABC or MBC whose disease has progressed after receiving previous Treatment with an anthracycline, a taxane, and trastuzumab. Of note, lapatinib is the first FDA-approved tyrosine kinase inhibitor indicated for use in MBC. Ixabepilone, the first FDA-approved analog of the antimicrotubule agent epothilone B, is indicated as monotherapy for the Treatment of LABC or M ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 5 days ago

Related Articles Hazard of recurrence and adjuvant Treatment effects over time in lymph node-negative Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2008 Oct 2; Authors: Dignam JJ, Dukic V, Anderson SJ, Mamounas EP, Wickerham DL, Wolmark N Background For patients with axillary lymph node-negative Breast Cancer, benefits from adjuvant therapy are smaller than in node-positive disease and thus more selective use is warranted, prompting development of risk profiling to identify those most likely to benefit. Examination of the magnitude and changes in the hazard of failure over time in node-negative Breast Cancer may also be informative in this regard. Methods Among 9,444 participants from five randomized trials (accrual 1982-1998) investigating chemotherapy and tamoxifen for node-negative Breast Cancer, we estimated recurrence hazards over time by tumor estrogen receptor (ER) status and adjuvant Treatment. Results In patients treated by surgery only, we observed the previously noted larger hazard peak followed by a rapid decrease in ER-negative patients and smaller but more persistent hazard in ER-positive patients. After approximately 48 months, the ER-positive hazard is greater. For adjuvant Treatment, while tamoxifen decreases the early hazard in ER-positive patients to that of the chemotherapy-treated ER-negative group, in later follow-up (beyond 5 years) the hazard for ER-positive patients again exceeds that of ER-negative patients. Related Articles Use of antioxidant supplements during Breast Cancer Treatment: a comprehensive review. Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2008 Oct 7; Authors: Greenlee H, Hershman DL, Jacobson JS Purpose An estimated 45-80% of Breast Cancer patients use antioxidant supplements after diagnosis, and use of antioxidant supplements during Breast Cancer Treatment is common. Dietary supplements with antioxidant effects include vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and other natural products. We conducted a comprehensive review of literature on the associations between antioxidant supplement use during Breast Cancer Treatment and patient outcomes. Methods Inclusion criteria were: two or more subjects; clinical trial or observational study design; use of antioxidant supplements (vitamin C, vitamin E, antioxidant combinations, multivitamins, glutamine, glutathione, melatonin, or soy isoflavones) during chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or hormonal therapy for Breast Cancer as exposures; Treatment toxicities, tumor response, recurrence, or survival as outcomes. Results We identified 22 articles that met those criteria. Their findings did not support any conclusions regarding the effects of individual antioxidant supplements during conventional Breast Cancer Treatment on toxicities, tumor response, recurrence, or survival. A few studies suggested that antioxidant supplements might decrease side effects associated with Treatment, including vitamin E for ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 33 days ago

Related Articles Acupuncture for the Treatment of hot flashes in Breast Cancer patients, a randomized, controlled trial. Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2008 Oct 7; Authors: Hervik J, Mjåland O Acupuncture has been used to treat the problem of hot flashes in healthy postmenopausal women. The object of this study was to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture in women with Breast Cancer suffering from hot flashes as a result of anti-oestrogen medication. In a prospective, controlled trial, 59 women suffering from hot flashes following Breast Cancer surgery and adjuvant oestrogen-antagonist Treatment (Tamoxifen) were randomized to either 10 weeks of traditional Chinese acupuncture or sham acupuncture (SA). Mean number of hot flashes at day and night were recorded prior to Treatment, during the Treatment period as well as during the 12 weeks following Treatment. A validated health score (Kupperman index) was conducted at baseline, at the end of the Treatment period and at 12 weeks following Treatment. During the Treatment period mean number of hot flashes at day and night was significantly reduced by 50 and almost 60%, respectively from baseline in the acupuncture group, and was further reduced by 30% both at day and night during the next 12 weeks. In the sham acupuncture group a significant reduction of 25% in hot flashes at day was seen during Treatment, but was reversed during the following 12 weeks. No reduction was seen in hot flashes at ni ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 3 days ago

Related Articles [Post-Treatment sequelae after Breast Cancer conservative surgery] Ann Chir Plast Esthet. 2008 Apr;53(2):135-52 Authors: Delay E, Gosset J, Toussoun G, Delaporte T, Delbaere M Thanks to the earlier detection of Breast Cancer, the advent of neoadjuvant therapy and the development of more effective surgical procedures reducing Treatment sequelae, conservative Treatment has dramatically expanded over the past 15 years. Several factors have recognized negative aesthetic consequences for Breast Cancer patients: being overweight, having voluminous or on the contrary, very small breasts, having a tumor located in the lower quadrant, having high Breast-tumor: Breast-volume ratio. Tissue injuries induced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, such as shrinking, fibrosis or induration, maximize the deleterious impact of surgery. The results of conservative Treatment also deteriorate with time: weight gain is common and may result in increased Breast asymmetry. Patients undergoing conservative Treatment may experience sequelae including various degrees of the following dimorphisms, all possibly responsible for minor or even major Breast deformity: Breast asymmetry, loss of the nipple/areola complex, scar shrinkage and skin impairment, irregular shape and position of the nipple and areola. Various sensory symptoms have also been reported following conservative Treatment, with patients complaining of hypo- or dysesthesia or even sufferi ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 39 days ago

The health concerns about bisphenol-A (BPA), a component of hard polycarbonate plastic, has been extended once again (see here , here , here for previous posts on BPA). BPA, a ubiquitous contaminant of human bodies, leaches from water and baby bottles, the lining of tin cans, dental sealants and many other sources. BPA also looks a lot like potent hormones, like estradiol and the synthetic estrogenic agent, diethylstilbesterol (DES), the cause of transplacental carcinogenesis in humans. So there have been plausible concerns that BPA might increase the risk of Cancer in humans, especially in hormonally sensitive tissues like Breast. A new paper from Nira Ben-Jonathan's laboratory at the University of Cincinnati now adds another concern: that BPA may be increasing resistance to chemotherapy for Breast Cancer.
