Shannon Ligammari, manager of the Victor Target, said she has lost count of the pink products — from water filters to soaps to vacuum cleaners — in the store this year. “All of the stuff is really cute,” Ligammari said. “People like the fact that they can choose a vacuum in pink for the same price as one in black.” The pink wares and edibles show up every year in October, which various organizations have designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month; portions of the proceeds from sales go toward research and treatment of the disease. “We know that this cause is important to manufacturers,” said Jo Natale, spokeswoman for Wegmans. “We are always in favor of manufacturers that sell special editions of their products for something positive.” At the Wegmans store in Canandaigua, a wall-size “Pick Pink” poster illustrates the variety of products that have gone pink for the month, including Jello, Crystal Light drink canisters and Yoplait Yogurt. Nationwide, Target donated $600,000 to Breast cancer research based on sales of pink-colored products. The Hershey Company will donate $300,000 to the Young Survival Coalition, a non-profit network of Breast cancer survivors and supporters.  All the marketing dovetails with health care workers’ efforts to spread the word about treatment and detection of the disease. Jonathan Rubins, an oncologist from Interlakes Oncology and Hematology Group, who is also affiliated with Sands Cancer Center, sai ...

After Judy Koslowski was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer the first step towards survival was removing her tumor. She opted for a lumpectomy, which only removes the tumor, instead of a full Breast removal known as a Mastectomy. "Through an incision which is probably an inch, inch and a half, we take the lump out," said Judy’s Surgeon, Dr. Ghassem Manguori. The outpatient surgery lasted about an hour and a half and after a little less than two weeks of recovery it was time for Judy to start treatment to prevent the Cancer from coming back. "I was told that it's best to do both, to try to do all treatments possible to fight this and that chemotherapy would be recommended first," she said. Chemotherapy treatments for stage one cancer usually last from 4 to 6 months. Knowing what many patients think of when they hear the word "Chemo", doctors at Lourdes prepared Judy for what to expect. "What it translates into as far as the low blood count and the nausea, the majority of patients, feel a little queasy, they will lose their hair for some chemotherapy regimens, not all of them and they would get a low white count and they would feel tired. Many people do get very sick, but the majority of patient tolerate it very well," said Medical Oncologist, Jonathan Kloss. Because she planned to continue working and try to keep a sense of normalcy in her life, Judy opted for a less concentrated form of Chemotherapy over a longer period of tim ...

For mechanical engineering professor Jaydev Desai, Breast cancer awareness is more than a month-long endeavor. Though October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Desai has spent the past year and a half developing a robot that can perform biopsies and destroy tumor cells all in one session, making the diagnosis and treatment of Breast cancer less time-consuming and more accurate. "It will revolutionize how procedures are performed for Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment." Desai said. ...
