Hard times got you down? Well don't expect the weekend's Box Office numbers to cheer you up any: 1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua - $29 million Since we first glimpsed its trailer —a jaw-dropping depiction of 45,000 CGI chihuahuas line-kicking to a song about burrito condiments on the steps of a Mayan ruin—we've made little secret of our obsession with this movie. Sadly, a painful ingrown toenail prevented us (yes—all three of us; when one is hurts, the others feel it just as deeply) from actually paying to see it. Enough did, however, to earn Disney its highest-ever October opening. They were mostly struggling American families, looking in this canine rags-to-riches story for a distraction from their growing financial woes, like Little Orphan Annie did during the Great Depression. Unfortunately, the plan largely backfired, as all hungry audiences could see in place of the film's adorable Mexican lapdogs were delicious, charcoal-broiled rotisserie chihuahuas floating across the screen. 2. Eagle Eye - $17.7 million Meanwhile, this hi-tech thriller starring Shia LaBeouf (in his last pinkie-nail-intact role) continued to draw them in, in which he and Katie Holmes's MI3 stand-in play two strangers taunted mercilessly by That Lady Who Offers Voicemail Options. 3. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - $12 million We had high hopes based on the cleverly culled clips used in the commercial, but came away extremely disappointed, as just about ev ...

The Box Office big-hitters at the Olympics or Paralympics will always be the athletes, swimmers, rowers and cyclists. Over the last few days in ParalympicsGB hasn't let us down. David Weir finally grabbed a slice of Gold pie in the Bird's Nest, 13-year-old Eleanor Simmonds got us all blubbering after putting her school books down to win two golds in the pool, and at the start of the Games there was blind cyclist Aileen McGlynn's glorious win in the velodrome. And before I get a whacking from a rowing blade, there was of course Helene Raynsford's historic win a few days ago. But listen up, there's a Paralympic sport that may have fallen off a few radars, but has certainly been rocking my world. It's got violence, bags of skill and more bangs than a Guy Ritchie re-make of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang . (just a play on the word 'bang' in case you were thinking Dick Van Dyke had played the sport). The Hollywood A-listers of the 1930s and 1940s helped pave the way for smoking in the movies that continues today, according to a study of endorsement contracts between the studios and tobacco companies and advertisements from that era. Researchers at Stanford and at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at UC San Francisco examined records from the UCSF Legacy Tobacco Documents Library and the Jackler advertising collection at Stanford. During the '30s and '40s, two-thirds of the top 50 Box Office stars in Hollywood endorsed tobacco brands for advertising purposes and were paid a lot to do so, the study found. In return for the paid testimonials of their stars, the major studies benefited from ads for their movies in lucrative "cross over" deals, paid for by the tobacco companies, the research shows. Actors Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Joan Crawford, John Wayne, Bette Davis and Betty Grable all appeared in advertisements for such brands as Lucky Strike, Old Gold, Chesterfield and Camel. Movie industry executives claim the right of artistic freedom and often say that smoking is part of character development or the need to create a realistic scene. But the exploration of the early studio-era contracts suggests that smoking in the movies was a mutually beneficial business deal with effects that linger today, said Dr. Stanton Glantz, the lead author of the paper , which is published today in the journal Tobacco Contr ...

Hancock dominated the 4th of July weekend -- both the three-day and the five-day versions -- at the Box Office. The movie's $66 million weekend and its even more impressive $107 million five-day take prove one thing: Will Smith not only still owns Independence Day (he has since Independence Day , really), but he also showed that he really is the last movie star. (Take that, Time magazine and George Clooney !) In an age when almost no one else can guarantee Box Office success, it's a comfort to know we can still count on Will Smith. Unlike other celebrities, no amount of Scientology rumors or other gossip seems to affect his draw at the Box Office. That's a good thing for the movies, and a good thing for moviegoers. He's a reliable commodity in a tenuous industry. Continue reading this entry on The Moviefile . ...

DVD Reviews: Clearly, not everything George Clooney touches turns to Gold, as evidenced by the mixed reviews and subpar Box Office for his football period pic”Leatherheads.” Yet, the hit-and-miss aspect of screwball comedy is sometimes better tolerated at home than in an ever-increasingly expensive evening out at the multiplex. ...

Skip It The more Dane Cook craves leading man status and comedy credibility, the more it eludes him. "My Best Friend's Girl" is Cook's third attempt to turn himself into Box Office Gold, and he's wised up for this effort, luring Kate Hudson and her fan base into the fold for this round of slapstick. However, there could be a supporting turn from Will Smith, gas gift cards under every theater seat, and certified proof who killed JFK revealed only after the end credits and it still wouldn't salvage Cook's remarkable ability to select the worst possible starring vehicles for himself. "Girl" is just another step in the multiplex mangling of Cook's once proud name. Dustin (Jason Biggs) is a lovesick stooge who pines daily for his ex-girlfriend, Alexis (Kate Hudson). Hoping to win her back, Dustin asks loutish friend Tank (Dane Cook) to take Alexis out on a hideous date to show her how good she had it when she... Read the entire review ...

The Dark Knight had better watch out - come Oscar time the whole world's going to be in a randy froth about Burn After Reading. No wonder Burn After Reading is top of the weekend Box Office today - just look at the pedigree. An Oscar-winning actor, an Oscar-winning actress and the world's biggest celebrity starring in a movie by the most recent winners of the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars. In fact, never mind the weekend Box Office - Burn After Reading should be Gold-plated and put on God's mantlepiece forever. It probably won't be, because in fact Burn After Reading looks like the sort of self-consciously wacky nonsense that'd go straight to DVD if the Coen Brothers didn't direct it. But, hey, you can't argue with a number one spot at the US weekend Box Office - that's the Bangkok Dangerous spot, after all. ...

THIS YEAR has seen an amazing array of superhero movies. Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Batman sequel The Dark Knight is still soaring as an unstoppable success, while director Jon Favreau made iron into Box Office Gold with the first big-screen appearance of Iron Man. Coming from opposite camps - Batman from DC comics, Iron Man from Marvel in its first self-funded comicbook adaptation - and released in a competitive summer, comparisons were inevitable, a showdown unavoidable. The rivalry intensified when Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr lashed out at the Batman film in a rant reported by Moviehole. Downey Jr (pictured below right) said: "The Dark Knight [is] like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and scriptwriting and I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.' I loved [Christopher Nolan's] The Prestige but didn't understand The Dark Knight. "Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I'm like, 'I get it. This is so highbrow and so f***ing smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.' You know what? F*** DC comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from." Ouch. No love lost there. But a head-to-head between the two movies was expected. Even back in April the notion of the two billionaire crimefighters going head to head was depicted by cult street artist The Artful D ...
