There's no sign of a new major phishing scheme or email-based malware assault, but that hasn't stopped the total number of botnet-controlled systems from ballooning over the summer. This could have been caused by college and high school students with too much time on their hands, or could signal that the malware industry has widely embraced SQL injection. Read More... ...

Well, the government is well on its way to bailing out Wall Street from its own incompetence, putting taxpayers on the hook for $700 billion.  The worst part is that as Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson puts it, "You're worried about taxpayers being on the hook?  Well, guess what?  They're already on the hook!"  I read that and said "Aw, crap..." Anyhow, Wall Street should maybe learn something from botnet operators.  For you see, Botnets are not just for sending spam anymore.  The bots have diversified their holdings: Sending spam - Botnets curse and plague us with piles of spam in our inboxes every single day.  Spamming is big business and by randomizing the location of where the mail is coming from, spammers can evade reputation filters for a little while. Signing up for webmail accounts - Google, Yahoo and Hotmail all have problems with spammers creating free accounts, sending spam and avoiding each other's reputation filters.  The thing is, it's bots that are creating these free webmail accounts.  So instead of sending spam directly, these bots are doing automated account creation and using a loophole to send spam - that of evading a reputation filter by hijacking someone else's. Creating landing pages - Not only do bots sign up for email accounts, they sign up and create landing pages, like a spammy Live Spaces account or Google Blogspot account.  They break the CAPTCHA's these services have and create the landing pages so that whe ...

Back to school season carries its own traditions: shopping, homework, decreased social networking, and now botnet malware attacks on US schools and government organizations. Back To School Malware Botnets Starting in early September, MessageLabs tells us, security experts began intercepting email-borne malware attacks on US schools and other state government organizations, especially in New Mexico, Virginia, Illinois, and Hawaii. The emails originated from 15 IP addresses in the former Soviet Union. MessageLabs says this could be the result of a botnet "looking to expand." They believe the emails are disguised as Microsoft Windows Updates, and carry the Trojan-Spy.Win32.Zbot.ele. The attacks may also be deploying the Antivirus XP 2008 malware. As usual don't open attachments, especially the ones in these emails with subject lines marked "ALERT!" or "Warning." The attachments themselves are named update.exe, security.exe, and security851.exe. Paul Wood, Senior Analyst for MessageLabs says September malware attacks targeting schools are not uncommon. "It isn't entirely surprising to see attacks targeting schools at this time of year," he said. "We generally expect an increase in spam and malware once school is back in session. The education sector is often targeted hoping to catch students and teachers off guard and the bad guys know that executable attachments on email will likely be blocked so they are practicing due diligence and incl ...

Both the number of Botnets and the size of individual Botnets have quadrupled in the past 90 days, according to security researchers. Despite the sudden influx, spam and malware has not increased correspondingly, making the case more mysterious. Botnets Increase Four Fold Over Summer John Bambanek at Internet Storm Center points to Shadow Server to illustrate the tremendous spate of botnet activity over the summer. Typically, when Botnets increase, so does new malware like viruses, spyware, and spam. "I imagine that the bad guys have gotten better about keeping machines owned, but there is one vector that we need to get much better about tracking and managing, and that's direct web-based malware. The timing, very roughly, coincides with when we started to see increase SQL injection attacks against webservers (mind you, this is an educated guess that SQL injections are a big part of this, not a statement of fact)." Though malware-fighters are very adept at tracking email spam from zombie machines, Bambanek notes the difficulty in scanning the entire Internet to find malware that possibly has been injected deep into websites. Still, you might expect to see an increase in new viruses after the fact. One theory has suggested the summer botnet increase is attributable to bored students being off from school. Time will tell if the botnet attacks decrease, increase or stay level as September continues. This probably has nothing to do with it ...

Reports are emerging today that a 450,000 computer strong botnet has been built over the summer. At the same time as the flood of new Blu-Ray devices hits the market, Samsung VP Andy Griffiths has said he figures Blu-Ray has five years left in the format. He also says this is the year the format will hit mainstream. Cognitive dissonance? And what of the new Amazon Video on Demand? Amazon, now with downloadable movies and music, seems to be trying to make a move on iTunes. ...
