-{12204569168161}--> City officials expected that, barring an unforeseen hang-up at the State House, Melrose voters would vote this November on wine and beer sales in smaller Restaurants and retail stores. That unforeseen hang-up is here. A political fight, coincidentally over a liquor license but this time in Westwood, has stalled all House business for nearly three weeks as two representatives jockey for position by using procedural tactics to block voting on bills. Meanwhile, the Secretary of State’s office requires that ballot questions for this November’s election be approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor by Friday, Sept. 5. Thursday, Sept. 4 is the last day of legislative sessions before the deadline. If the Melrose bill is not approved by that deadline, the two questions — whether to allow up to three retail stores to sell beer and wine, and whether to allow Restaurants with between 50 and 100 seats to apply for a beer and wine license — will not appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. The stalling is a result of a battle between state Rep. Paul McMurtry, D-Dedham, and Rep. Angelo Scaccia, D-Boston. According to the State House News Service, Scaccia is blocking McMurtry’s bill to obtain a liquor license for a Westwood Wegmans supermarket, arguing it would put Massachusetts supermarket chain Roche Bros. at a competitive disadvantage. A single member can block any bill during informal House sessions. In retaliation, McMurtry ...

Normal 0 Normal 0 Melrosians will get to vote on liquor sales in Melrose after all. Thursday, both House and Senate approved the two ballot questions on whether to allow up to three retail stores to sell beer and wine and whether to allow Restaurants with between 50-100 seats to apply for a beer and wine license. Gov. Deval Patrick signed the bill on Friday, meaning Melrose voters will weigh in on both questions come the Nov. 4 presidential election. The Secretary of State’s office requires that ballot questions for this November’s election be approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor by Friday, Sept. 5. Thursday, Sept. 4 was the last day of legislative sessions before the deadline. Mayor Rob Dolan received word around 2 p.m. on Friday that Patrick had signed the bill, which Mike Smith, communications director for Sen. Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, confirmed shortly thereafter. The bill was in jeopardy this week after being held up in the House during a lengthy political fight. Coincidentally, the fight, which stalled all House business for nearly three weeks, was over a liquor license in Westwood being disputed by Rep. Paul McMurtry, D-Dedham, and Rep. Angelo Scaccia, D-Boston. The squabbling legislators have been using procedural tactics to block voting on all other bills. According to the State House News Service, Scaccia is blocking McMurtry’s bill to obtain a liquor license for a Wegmans supermarket proposed for a ... Source: metrobostonnews.com --- 31 days ago
