If all goes according to plan, Lenny Gallant will be in the Bronx this afternoon, presumably rooting for the Boston Red Sox and hoping for a sweep over the New York Yankees in Boston's final regular-season appearance at Yankee Stadium. Gallant of Chester, N.H., will be there in his capacity as grand prize winner of the "Surf Turf and Win" sweepstakes sponsored by D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches , the Dedham-based chain. The prize? An all-expense paid, two-day trip to New York to see the Sox for Gallant and three of his pals. Gallant was selected from more than 4,000 text entries to the sweepstakes, which ran from July 7 through August 22, D'Angelo said in a press release. “We want to provide our guests with exciting incentives to visit our web site and stop by our Restaurants,” Michael McManama, D'Angelo senior vice president of brand development, said in a statement. “D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches enjoys a strategic marketing relationship with the Red Sox and this relationship enables us to provide great Red Sox experiences for our guests.” (By Chris Reidy, Globe staff) ...

-{12204569168161}--> City officials expected that, barring an unforeseen hang-up at the State House, Melrose voters would vote this November on wine and beer sales in smaller Restaurants and retail stores. That unforeseen hang-up is here. A political fight, coincidentally over a liquor license but this time in Westwood, has stalled all House business for nearly three weeks as two representatives jockey for position by using procedural tactics to block voting on bills. Meanwhile, the Secretary of State’s office requires that ballot questions for this November’s election be approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor by Friday, Sept. 5. Thursday, Sept. 4 is the last day of legislative sessions before the deadline. If the Melrose bill is not approved by that deadline, the two questions — whether to allow up to three retail stores to sell beer and wine, and whether to allow Restaurants with between 50 and 100 seats to apply for a beer and wine license — will not  appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. The stalling is a result of a battle between state Rep. Paul McMurtry, D-Dedham, and Rep. Angelo Scaccia, D-Boston. According to the State House News Service, Scaccia is blocking McMurtry’s bill to obtain a liquor license for a Westwood Wegmans supermarket, arguing it would put Massachusetts supermarket chain Roche Bros. at a competitive disadvantage. A single member can block any bill during informal House sessions. In retaliation, McMurtry ...

The Japanese and Chinese fusion restaurant Hanabi on Route 139 opened over the weekend, the result of half a year of renovations that started from a complete gutting of the former Jamie’s. Before the restaurant opened for dinner Aug. 29, workers made finishing touches sweeping and cleaning, and cooks prepared dumplings and stocked the sushi bar. The restaurant has been divided into several rooms, each with its own purpose and its own feel. There is a large waiting area, a low-lit lounge and dance floor with flat screen televisions, a covered outside patio, a hibachi room, a buffet room, a sushi bar, a function room seating 50 and a general dining room. The restaurant has live music and dancing on the weekends, and is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day. Katy Wong of Boston, the general manager, was there to oversee the preparations for the Friday opening, as well as the whole renovation process that started in February. Wong owns two other Restaurants with her sister in Westwood and Walpole called Blue Orchid. Hanabi is her own project. “Hanabi means fireworks: it’s one of the busiest holidays in Japan where everyone comes together,” she said. “We wanted to create a really nice place to dine that caters to families, yet also having the entertainment, nighttime part.” Wong said the renovations took longer than expected because they took on a life of their own in the process. “We did a lot of work. The lighting, the sound system, e ...

Normal 0 Normal 0 Melrosians  will get to vote on liquor sales in Melrose after all. Thursday, both House and Senate approved the two ballot questions on whether to allow up to three retail stores to sell beer and wine and whether to allow Restaurants with between 50-100 seats to apply for a beer and wine license. Gov. Deval Patrick signed the bill on Friday, meaning Melrose voters will weigh in on both questions come the Nov. 4 presidential election. The Secretary of State’s office requires that ballot questions for this November’s election be approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor by Friday, Sept. 5. Thursday, Sept. 4 was the last day of legislative sessions before the deadline. Mayor Rob Dolan received word around 2 p.m. on Friday that Patrick had signed the bill, which Mike Smith, communications director for Sen. Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, confirmed shortly thereafter. The bill was in jeopardy this week after being held up in the House during a lengthy political fight. Coincidentally, the fight, which stalled all House business for nearly three weeks, was over a liquor license in Westwood being disputed by Rep. Paul McMurtry, D-Dedham, and Rep. Angelo Scaccia, D-Boston. The squabbling legislators have been using procedural tactics to block voting on all other bills. According to the State House News Service, Scaccia is blocking McMurtry’s bill to obtain a liquor license for a Wegmans supermarket proposed for a ...

“Made in Brockton” once applied primarily to shoes, now the label might be more fitting for food It’s 6 p.m., and at Liberty Bakery Kitchen, floor manager Manny Vieira is on Boston cream duty. Vieira takes a hollow doughnut and presses it against a tube, filling it with custard. Other workers are baking, frosting, powdering with sugar. The treats are being made for the region’s ubiquitous doughnut chain, Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s a big operation: The Brockton factory, which opened in 2003, supplies 132 of the chain’s Restaurants in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “Made in Brockton” once applied primarily to shoes. Now the label might be more fitting for food. Chicago-style pizzas for Uno Restaurants, Near East pita bread, caramel for major candy bar brands – they’re all manufactured here. And many of the largest businesses that have moved to the city in recent years are in food. “We’re not really surprised about the fact we’re getting food manufacturers,” said Mary Waldron, executive director of the 21st Century Corp., a city-funded development group. “Brockton has affordability – much better prices compared to the region north of us.” The city also has vacant factory buildings available, along with a large pool of potential workers, Waldron said. Brockton’s food manufacturers currently employ about 1,000 people. The largest employer is Concord Foods, with 220 workers. Among the company’s main products are caramel, which is sold to maj ...

As notes of jazz waft through Chandler Park in the coming days, the artists traveling to Macomb to perform are as varied as their musical styles and histories. The seventh annual Al Sears Jazz Festival runs Friday through Sept. 14, with a full day of music in Chandler Park on Saturday. Events kick off with Artists in Residence Day on Friday, giving Western Illinois University and high school students a chance to interact with the artists visiting for the festival. Then at 5 p.m., jazz combos will perform for diners at several local Restaurants. A Bureau of Cultural Affairs Jazz Concert, featuring the Freddy Cole Quartet, will then be held at WIU's College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the concert is $15. Cole is the brother of performer Nat King Cole. Events on Saturday begin at noon in Chandler Park, the same time the Gazebo Arts Festival kicks off. Performers are scheduled to take the stage each hour until midnight and include a variety of groups from Western Illinois University joined by the St. Louis Rivermen and the Dave Hoffman Quintet with vocalist Semenya McCord. A Galesburg native and middle-school teacher, McCord teaches general music and the choirs. She moved back to the area after living in the Boston area for 30 years. She said she travels back two or three times each year to perform with musicians she worked with previously. "I've been bringing a few of them here to Galesburg f ...
