Americans will have an important decision to make this coming November 4, a decision that will not only affect their lives but the lives of their children. The choice is between a newcomer, an agent of change, and a more established, familiar candidate. The newcomer is flexible where the old guard is stiff and unyielding. The choice will have far reaching effects on the environment, the economy, and foreign relations. I'm speaking, of course, about the choice between the hardcover version of RADIO FREEFALL and the mass market paperback . The hardcover version says "I have the experience to deliver hard SF rock-and-roll cyberpunk goodness to the reader. I have a proven track record, I am more durable, and I have a fantastic cover." The paperback counters "American needs new ideas, and new ways of presenting them. I cost considerably less and I am more convenient to carry, thus fitting in with America's busy lifestyles. I, too, have a fantastic cover complete with a quote from Locus." A third party candidate too insignificant to name said "Both these books offer the exact same content. The so called agent of change is merely a repackaged update of the exact same Book. Americans will undoubtedly see right through this charade and purchase a true alternative ." This choice is not only important for Americans but for the entire world. While neither candidate is published outside the United States of America, both are available through Expo ...

This past weekend, nearly thirty thousand people gathered in Los Angeles for the American publishing industry’s biggest trade show, BookExpo, or BEA for short. Roughly a thousand authors signed books, and two thousand exhibitors plied visitors with flyers, pencils, books, and other give-aways as well as tote bags to haul their goodies in. The press reported that the show was poorly attended and lackluster compared with previous shows. Still, I found it worthwhile, in part because of the light crowd. Without hordes of people demanding attention at every booth, I was able to talk with many authors and publishers. I was pleased to bump into two writer friends ( Carleen Brice the Pajama Gardener , who had signed Orange Mint and Honey the night before, and Lisa Gardner , who was about to sign Say Goodbye ). I got a load of books for myself. Much of my Christmas shopping for my nieces and nephews is now done. Most exciting, I got to meet my agent in person, and we had a long dinner topped off with yummy desserts at a restaurant that used to be a firehouse. My highlights from the show: Biggest surprise seen on the exhibit floor: Gibson, the world’s tallest dog, who was there promoting his new Book (He’s pictured at right with his vet.) Oddest Book plot: Corpse of Freedom by Dax Garner and Lloyd Garner, in which a teenager digs up a corpse and, in the words of the Book flyer, “befriends the carcass . . . [and] is mentored toward a new perspecti ...

Like a really good lunch buffet, Slow Food Nation was enormous, a feast for the eyes, belly and mind. The four-day event in San Francisco drew a crowd of 60,000 over Labor Day weekend, according to organizers, who are calling it the largest celebration of food in America. It was also a first for parent organization Slow Food USA, the North American arm of the international Slow Food movement. The entryway for Slow Food Nation, with San Francisco's City Hall in the background. (Kim O'Donnel) The choices for what to see, taste, hear and discuss were many and varied, and my biggest challenge was in deciding what to do first. There were lectures with star-studded panels, smaller workshops with artisans and activists, a farmers' market, Victory garden and open-air food court, Book signings, film screenings, a rock concert and a "Taste Pavilion," an indoor regional/artisanal foods Expo. As a member ...

David Wroblewski iis on a wroll ... er, roll. It's not enough that he had the breakout hit of summer in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle ; now he's been blessed by Oprah Winfrey as her next Book club pick. A brief personal anecdote: Earlier this year, when I was at Book Expo America , I was waiting at the HarperCollins booth as the scout for Oprah's Book Club was excusing herself. I tried to chat her up, just to get her sense of what the Expo meant to her. She smiled, shook her head and made it clear: She had nothing to say to me. As a result, I was feeling slightly hurt when a polite publicist for Ecco started chatting me up about this exciting new Book he had, and would I like to meet the author. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," I thought. "Dogs and Hamlet in Wisconsin? Now THAT'S a winning recipe. The nerve of these people." I slipped away without bothering to say hi. Luckily for me, I ran into the same publicist at a party later that day. Mr Wroblewski was with him. Which is where I learned he has Texas ties, having once lived in Austin. Which eventually got me to read the Book. Which has its flaws, but holds up well under what could be crushing hype. I'm glad I was introduced to it. Apparently, that Oprah scout was, too. UPDATE: Oprah apparently REALLY liked this Book. "I think this Book is right up there with the greatest American novels ever written, I really do," she at the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show . According to AP, Winfrey raved for seve ...

We played 2 days at the Book Expo America in downtown Los Angeles. We spent the entire time dressed as pirates to promote a series of 30's and 40's pulp fiction books being rereleased. You should have seen some of the looks we got walking through the street to the diner! Ian in full plundering regalia. Hmm pity about the background... And with a little photoshop magic, hey presto and instant pirate ship cargo hold! With Marvel Comic legend, Stan Lee ...
